I had an interesting telephone call today. This lady who has cerebral palsy(I hope I spelled that right) called me to find out if I could help her as far as self-defense is concerned. She sounded very frightened and says she is very vulnerable to attack for two reasons: 1. She's handicapped. 2. She's a woman. I don't blame her for feeling this way. She says she is in a wheel chair and has full upper-body useage and very minimal lower body. She has been attacked before and came out on the losing end. To what extent, I did not get into that with her.. She really touched me inside, I must say. I want to help this woman as much as I can. As a TKD instructor I can see teaching her all the upper body techniques, blocks, ect. I may have to modify them slightly to her wheelchair situation but it's doable. I also teach CDT at my dojang. This also may be the way to go since CDT uses no punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes. I will contact Mr. Patire on that one. What do you guys and gals think? Have any of you been in this situation? Do any of you teach students with these handicaps now? This is a totally new challenge to me I will admit. She also inquired about any type of small handheld noise-making devices to alert persons in the area of her needing help. Someone suggested a coach's whistle to keep with her. Are there any such devices out there that maybe she could use?? Thank you to any and all who supply helpful suggestions. I haven't sacrificed much flexibility and I train intensely. If may suggest training your legs just once a week. our leg muscles are some of the biggest muscles on your body and therefore need time to recover. The most important thing is to also stretch after your workouts. I would not suggest stop training on your lower body but maybe lift lighter weight and more repetitions. If you are running two miles a day and riding a bike for about 20 minutes also it sounds to me that you are not getting enough rest and recovery time. I would try cutting down on at lest one of these activities. I also assume your going to TKD classes about three times a week too. Get a little more rest and you will get even stronger. By all means keep stretching that is very important. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I Have a very personal relationship with GM Ji mostly due to the fact that he lives 20 minutes away from me. Given his status I make myself available to him. I have learned that there are a lot of self-serving individuals who take advantage of GM Ji good nature and almost naieve disposition. Believe me, you guys "don't know the half of it" My assessment is that he is too trusting and has too much faith in the human condition... For example, when I mentioned to him that he was on the cover of the recently released Taekwondo Times, he did not know what I was talking about and asked me to get him a copy of the magazine. Lately, I find myself running interferance for him, to make sure that he is not taken advantage of. I am very disturbed that a man (such as GM Ji) who has contributed so much to the martial arts, is not really treated with the reverence and respect he deserves. Something is wrong with this picture and is a sad commentary on the martial arts as a whole. GM Ji is currently in Argentina. He will be back on Dec 18. I am supposed to meet with him shortly after his trip. Ray, I will let him know that you are trying to get in touch with him. Ian A. Were I to put it that bluntly some would have just thought it was my (obvious) bias toward Gm Ji. Yet everything you say is true and I have seen it occur time and time again. Given her situation, she may be a very good candidate to use a properly selected weapon(s), e.g. pepper spray, stun gun, knife, club, sap, brass knuckles, etc. Proper and regular training in same -may- be a good way to go. As I recall, CCWs are unfortunately not available in West Virginia, thus a concealed firearm is probably (legally) out of the question. Obviously, in the area of weapons one should check the state penal code and local codes. e.g. in California mere possession of brass knuckles, throwing stars, leaded canes, lipstick case knives, etc, even in the privacy of your home can be prosecuted as a felony. !!! > She also inquired about any type of small handheld noise-making devices to > alert persons in the area of her needing help. They are very loud and on the small side. Not as small as a whistle, but louder. ( Or did I sense three types?) I understand and have been taught foot to knee chamber, but that is only the second before the strike, when it comes to telepathing the kick when the knee is raised it is very difficult to know what is coming until the pivot and roll over. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
