Sounds like you do the knee forward side kick (as I do). i.e. the knee comes straight forward, pointing toward the target. The same for front, side, axe, etc. Some folks do the side kick with the pivot first, such that the knee points 90 degress from the intended target. As you say, bringing the knee straight forward makes it difficult to tell which kick is coming next. I too first thought of what weapons she may be able to use and carry, with OC (Pepper Spray) being the first thing I thought of. In a real SD situation, many martial artists will have trouble defending themselves. I'm not dissing any MA, but there are different focuses for training, and many people train for sport, competition, exercise, and self-betterment. All worthy reasons to train, but not necessarily the training that will save you when you are attacked. With this said, it can benefit any person, no matter what level of physical skill and training, to use a weapon to help protect oneself. The weapon, if the person knows how to deploy it properly, can increase your chances of survival. Pepper spray is one of the better ones out there. You still need to learn to use it, and recognize its limitations, but it can be a very good choice of something to carry. Of course, all the other standards should be taught and practiced as to awareness and avoidance principles and then the attitude of self-defense. The attitude that you will rip someone's eyeballs out, bite their nose off, tear off their ears off, and maim and hurt then anyway you can before you let them rape or injure or kill you. But if all they want is your money or material things, let them have them. Nothing material is worth losing your life over, or living with killing someone else. (after the courts get done with you) Just a few considerations. I hope you can help this lady, and more so, I hope she never faces another situation where she needs to defend herself. Awareness and Avoidance are key! This topic caught my eye - I don't know the original message, but I got the drift that it was a handicapped lady who may have been attacked, or wanting to learn martial arts? I could be wrong. But, my reasons for replying to this message, is that I am in training - I have done Taekwondo for 7 years, and I am currently doing Hakido - and I have Cerebal Palsy, very mild but it still affects my movements etc. I know that I will never be great at martial arts, but I always try.. I hope that people who do have disabilities, don't think that they are unable to train, or try anything. It doesn't matter who you are, or your skills, try everything you want to give a go. Whats stopping you? Anyway, I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and a happy new year. While you spend time figuring it out, another instructor could be able to accomplish much more than you. Please do not take any offense, I only say this from my own experience with the handicapped. When I discovered another instrucor in my area had light years of experience dealing with physically disabled students, I checked him out and sent every request for that type of training to him. I'm sure if I had spent more time...much more time...I could have accomplished the same task. He was just soooo much better at it than I was. I attended several sessions to assist and learn, and I discovered that I could do it, but it does take focused effort. With the couple handicapped students I had, the rewards of helping them were well worth the effort, and I would not trade that feeling for anything. Just realize what you could be getting into, and know your limitations. Good luck if you choose to help this student. Keep us up on the progress and results. -- Mark Gajdostik TNT-Police Combatives 503-789-1356 --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Mon, 16 Dec 2002 08:32:20 -0600 From: "bmac2" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Handicapped Students Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I >hope she never faces another situation where she needs to defend herself. >Awareness and Avoidance are key! > >Yours in Training, >Alain Burrese > I certainly agree that all the advise I have seen here on this subject and believe it is not limited to any particular student or situation. When competing at the 2002 Can-Am Classics, Ronda B (a student of GM Timmerman) put on an excellent self-defense demonstration from a chair. She never removed herself from her seated position. Also let us remember anything can be used as a weapon; umbrella, keys, purse (especially with some of us ladies), shoes, and even jewlrey just to mention a few. Good luck to all of us if we ever find ourselves in a grave situation. Sticking with knee-to-shoulder or other intermediate "reference point" means sticking with a well-telegraphed kick. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. (I'm sure all the ladies on the list think that is just a grand idea and are thinking - he needs to be pregnant for about 9 years and see what he thinks then) Seriously, that is great and with your guidance I expect to see Niko develop into one heck of a martial artist, both physically and in character development. <> Dear Alain, Not sure if my head will fit through the dojang door tonight but thanks! Niko has actually "done" all the Tang Soo Do forms through 5th Dan in the SNUGLI papoose style baby carrier before he could walk, and been to many outdoor training session of the same as a toddler. The youngest I take at my Dojang is 5 y/o who are family of other members, and I have taught 4 y/o's before. I felt like 3 would be the youngest we could try 15 minute private lessons. Sunday it seemed to work well so for now time will tell if he makes it to 9th gup. When he is 5 I will try to bring him into regular classes and begin competition with the AAU. And yes my wife (7th gup) says he was VERY active in the womb including kicking and hapkido falls and rolls . Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards a.k.a.
