Barring the historical inaccuracies on his site, he seems to be nice enough. Technically speaking, one can claim that the origins of Hapkido may lie in Bul Kyo Moo Sool, or Sado Moo Sul...but it is unlikely considering that over Korean influence of the arts on the Peninsula were eradicated at the end of the Yi dynasty (ie WWII). According to legend, So San Dae Sa used the cane to defeat marauding Samurai, so I guess I can see how the claim would originate. I do intend on asking about this inconsistency, particularly since It was my understanding that Dojunim Choi taught 15 kicks and he teaches 5. Further, he claims to teach the original root of Choi's art, so that would logically mean that he teaches purely a 20th century derivative of Daito-ryu. Anyone else able to recommend someone? Or maybe a place for me to rent to do Hapkido in? Thanks, Master Frank Clay Haemukwan Hapkido _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 3 months FREE*. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail&xAPID=42&PS=47575&PI=7324&DI=7474&SU= http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/getmsg&HL=1216hotmailtaglines_smartspamprotection_3mf --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2002 07:15:37 -0800 (PST) From: ramon Navarro To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: The_Dojang digest, Vol 9 #584 - msg #3: Dojang in the Miami area Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi and be blessed, also have a merry christmas Frank you and yours. Don, I trained with Jurg in the early '90s. He is a friend of my instructor and visited our school in Pittsburgh for a few days. He did a small seminar for my children's class and for the adult class. We had a great time. I have also had the privilege to train with him one on one. Yes he is a good martial artist. This is the hapkido side of him that I know. He trained with DJN Ji when Ji was in Germany before he came to the states. I also know that he trained in kung fu as a kid in Hong Kong and traveled there a lot to train. I'm a Bodan belt in Taekwondo and I've been looking to study Hapkido as well for quite some time. Any help would be appreciated. I have never worked with or around Rangers or Special Forces, but I have been exposed to USAF Combat Control Teams and Pararescue troopers and they aren't the Rambo types seen on T.V. As for the claims of training these elite troopers, I don't buy it. I rather answer an ad for a old hermit living in the mounatins looking for that one special student for an even more special price! He further stated that Mr. Garland maybe is hoping to be his "second man", but that is all. He intimated that Yung T. Freda was his successor if any, but GM Freda severed his association with him due to a misunderstanding. He finally stated that, at the moment, he has no such person in mind. I hope that this helps to bring accuracy to the article in the January 2003 issue of TKD TImes. Ray, I told him that you were trying to reach him and he stated he will be in touch. Ian A.
