I personally prefer the staff on the shorter side, as it is easier to handle and do stuff (like behind-the-back passes) without having the staff hit the ground. But, it's all up to personal preferences. My advise would be to try (borrow?) some of different lengths and see what feels best for you. -- Jose ------------------------------------------------------------------------ www.kiyap.com Online Community for Martial Artists View this thread: http://www.kiyap.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=689 --__--__-- Message: 3 From: SallyBaughn@aol.com Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 12:07:45 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net CC: kenroza66@netscape.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Weapons Question Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ken wrote: << At what height would a user switch lengths? By that measure, you should probably use the 6 foot staff. As a side note, the absolute best situation with a staff is to find someone who can make one specifically for you and cut/finish it to the correct length. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of weapon manufacturers who can or will do this. I prefer a longer weapon than my height, like maybe 6' 2" or 6'3" since I am 6' tall myself. Nothing too thick, but I like a little weight for a good workout, and I have a seperate lighter one that I would use for tournaments. We have one gentleman in our system who isn't very tall but is very ...wide..and thick.(not in a fat way, just in a 'please don't let that man hurt me' way) He prefers a telephone pole for a bo staff. His shureido bo is like a tree trunk without the bark. Maybe pick up some of your fellow students bo's and see what you like. If you order one of the cheapies from century, they will be red oak, and there is a good chance you will get a nice weapon. If you want a really high class custom made weapon out of just about any wood possible, I can set you up with Crane Mountain, but be prepared to spend about 75 bucks, and wait a good 3 weeks. Obviously, this can not be done if you are quite tall, since they don't come any longer than 6', unless you make your own. Others may have different guidelines. -Chris >I noted that there are different lengths (5' or 6') in adult staffs. > >At what height would a user switch lengths?
