You Make it yourself. My Karate Teacher makes his, and learned how from his instructor in Okinawa. What he does is he buys a 2X10 Chunk of hardwood. (He reccomends purpleheart, but I've done mine out of plain old oak.) Find someone with a table saw and rip (Cut it along the grain) Five times, giving you Five roughly 2"X2" blanks. Set the blade at 45 degrees on the table saw and turn them into octagonal poles. You can leave them this way or plane them down by hand into a round bow. Apply linseed oil and/or a varethane finish and Viola! You have a bo. Oh! Don't use Tung oil to finish your bo, though, as it gets absorbed into your skin when you sweat. Later! Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of weapon manufacturers who can or will do this. >> For bos, try kingfisherwoodworks.com. They only list bo lengths up to 56", but you could ask about longer lengths. I have purchased custom weapons in both impact grade hickory and rosewood and been very pleased with the quality and workmanship. Their laminated rosewood weapons are beautiful and have a nice weight (heavier than your average), but are extremely hard. We learned the hard way that they will break the bamboo on a shinai in short order. That is the way I personally also read that particular statement in the article. Why would TKDTimes write this as a quote?????? Why would TKDTimes write this as a quote?????? Several posibilities... It was said, but then the mind was later changed. It was misunderstood. The article was written and then someone, someone with something to gain, wrote in a few interesting bits at a later date. I suspect the latter. But then remember back to the two articles on Gm Hwang Kee a couple of issues back, just after he died. One article said his first martial arts lesson came after he was 21 or so years old. The other made the claim that he was already a martial arts master by the time he was 21. All in the same issue.
