Unfortunately, it seems to suffer from intermittent poor or loose writing - expecially when it comes to articles derived from interviews. Keeping good notes during an interview is a tough thing - even seasoned reporters try to tape most interviews to make sure that they stay accurate. I think that we should not raise our hackles against someone for something supposedly said to TKD TIMES. As the saying goes, just because you read it in print - doesn't make it true. I've never met Hapkido Practitioner Garland. I spoke to him once some time ago. He did not seem like the self serving egomaniac some of the posts have inferred. Someone should find out his perspective. All of us whou have either studied with GM Ji Han Jae or studied with those who have studied with him are his successors in passing Hapkido on to others. Lets focus on supporting each other's efforts - not arguing about who has what position on the totem pole. What is the current position of Grandmaster Seo? I was reading the ad in the January issue of TKD Times and it has him listed as their chairman/president. Then, pick up a can or tin of estapol, or any other wood staining product, & then stain or laquer the pole to your heart's content. Sand the ends so they are slightly rounded (so they won't splinter!), and you are done. The whole exercise should set you back no more than a few dollars, and the beauty of it is that you can make a variety of poles with different lengths, diameters, and colours for peanuts - which means you can experiment - and then work out what works for you. Extending this topic a bit further: Should a martial artist learn to accommodate a class of weapon with a set-in-stone, *exact* specification? Or, should the martial artist's weapon be a personal, customised weapon, tailor-made for the individual? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each approach? They simply do not have time. From my understanding, so long as the article is not a direct slam against someone, they may publish it. If you look at the vast number of submittals they receive, this is probably the most accurate. As far as Grandmaster Ji Han Jae's comments go: I find it very hard to believe that he would select someone like Chris. Chris is the kind of guy who will threaten you if you say something he doesn't like. The guy is a sociopath, and further the last I heard the KHF refuses to grant him rank for that reason. You are basically talking about an individual who did not spend nearly enough time in Korea to become such a master. Further, the last ad he had "First time these techniques are taught in the US"? Please!! Let me think: We have Master JR West, Master Rudy Timmerman, Grandmaster Ian Cyrus, Mr/Master Alain Burresse, Dr. Richard Hackworth, Grandmaster He Young Kimm, and many more. Is he trying to insinuate that NONE of these people have had the training he has? I have trained JinJunKwan, and was awarded a training certificate for it, so I know that those boys don't play. Its based on a small circle principle. Why would he say the things he says? Its all about greenbacks. Nothing more. Master Frank Clay PS: If I left a name, which I'm sure I did, it was not intended as an insult. There are many notables out there who I am sure I have not had the honor of meeting or hearing of. These are a few of the ones I know, or know of. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 limited-time offer: Join now and get 3 months FREE*. http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup&xAPID=42&PS=47575&PI=7324&DI=7474&SU= http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/getmsg&HL=1216hotmailtaglines_newmsn8ishere_3mf --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sun, 29 Dec 2002 11:53:34 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] KTA certs from Florida Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just another caveat emptor wrt KTA (Korea TKD Assoc) dan certs from a group down Florida way. Folks, to the best of my knowledge, and the knowledge of several others, the KTA doesn't issue Dan certs to those outside of Korea. The KTA is now the NGB of Korea to the WTF. Just as the USTU is the NGB of the USA to the WTF. The USTU doesn't issue Dan certs to citizens of Argentina currently living in Argentina. Similarly the KTA doesn't issue Dan certs to US citizens currently living in the US. Extend that example as you will. Exceptions are that the KTA -may- issue Dan certs to Koreans living outsite of Korea or non-Koreans living in Korea. If anyone has counter info, please send it our way. However my advice is to save your $$$. Did you find an English website for the Daehan KidoHae? Or is this the website for the World Kido Assoc in California? I do not believe they are the same. If you have a URL for the Daehan Kidohae, please send it our way... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Sun, 29 Dec 2002 18:08:44 -0500 From: "Rudy Timmerman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Shadow Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray writes: > The article was written and then > someone, someone with something to gain, wrote in a few interesting > bits at a later date. I suspect the latter. Hello Ray: I hope you had a nice holiday (I'll bet you visited your family in Ohio), and I wish you and all on the list the very best for New Year. I guess I am just a bit naive when it comes to self serving statements like the one we are discussing. I always thought/hoped that MA was in the spirit of integrity and loyalty. Looks like I was wrong again:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Sun, 29 Dec 2002 16:14:11 -0800 (PST) From: Charles Veuleman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Tung Oil Bad? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net One of my students used tung oil on his Century bo that he sanded down. It turned out very, VERY nice, and he hasn't had any problems with it bleeding onto his skin. (neither did I the few times I have used it myself). Maybe he used a very thin coat, or your past expierience was with a heavy coat or the wood didn't asbsorb it well, maybe even extreamly sweaty palms...There are probably alot of factors that go into it. The tung oil really gave the bo a nice feel. Probably one of the nicer bo's in the school. I will have to find out what Crane Mountain sells to coat their weapons with, it is very popular among the weapons competitors and practitioners in the Alliance (uska).
