Another that I would suggest is if you want to add something to you staff; go to a craft store and pick up a small wood burning kit. They will usually cost somewhere around $25.00. The kit includes a burning pen and a couple of tips. Burning some characters or your name on a staff looks real sharp before and better after the oil finish. One suggestion... burn before you use the oil finish. When Gen. Choi and his son first had their disagreement, I was sad to see an organization come between a father and son. But this convoluted mess of three ITFs, people breaking off everywhere, etc. is fairly disgusting to me. Especially at a time, supposedly, when a merger of the ITF and WTF could be possible. Too many chiefs, too many egos, and no one benefits, but other organizations. While the Moo Duk Kwan had previously splintered, they seem to have weathered the recent passing of GM Hwang at this stage. I hate to say this, but it seems that the intent behind forming the WTF as a unified organization separate from different Kwan personalities may have been a wise move for organizational longevity. I find it hard to believe the ITF can weather this schism. Any thoughts from ITF members? Best. I read your concern with a smile. There is no jinx, only training. But you may have to submit yourself to a more comprehensive training regime and then find your technical niche. Don't forget that winning is also attitude. However, if you still believe in jinxes. Overcome through prayer. Jesus works wonders. The award was established in 2001 in honor and memory of Christopher James Canning, an accomplished martial artist, who represented the sport and art of Taekwondo, along with its tenets, to their fullest meaning. This award and scholarship is presented to one martial artist within the AAU Taekwondo program who has attained the rank of 1st dan or above, is between the ages of 15 years and 18 years inclusive, and has demonstrated all three standards of the award. The award honors outstanding accomplishment in competitive Taekwondo, high academic achievement in school, and a deep involvement in community service helping others. These were characteristics of Christopher Canning that were part of his total being. It is these achievements and personal attributes that represent the standards of the award and what it honors. The first recipient of this prestigious award and the $1,000 scholarship was Kurt Fuhrmann of U.S. Family Martial Arts in New Jersey. Kurt was recognized and given this award during the opening ceremony of the National Youth and Adult Taekwondo Championships held in Greensboro, North Carolina on July 4, 2002. Each school, affiliated with the AAU, is be eligible to submit one student who meets the award standards and eligibility requirements as a candidate for consideration. Each club should receive, in the mail, the application form to be used to submit candidates. These applications should be accompanied by supporting documents from the high school, letters of recommendations, a resume of Taekwondo experience and achievement, documented community involvement, etc. These submittals can be made in April and May, but no later than 6/1/03. They are to be sent to Art Canning, 239 N. Wood Street, Maroa, Illinois 61756. Candidates must be eligible for the Nationals, planning on attending, participating in the opening ceremonies, and competing. Now is the time to start evaluating potential students for consideration and help guide them in meeting the standards of the award. The award and its standards require meeting the challenge to excel, the goal is achievable as demonstrated by Chris and Kurt. Help one of your students to traverse the path of these two young people, carry on the legacy, and set the example to achieve excellence. About last year's winner. Kurt Fuhrmann is an outstanding young man who met all three standards of the award. He is a 3rd dan, a member of the AAU's Taekwondo Team, a gold medal winner in Regional, State, National, AAU Junior Olympic Games, and International competition. He is an honor student in his high school and heavily involved with community youth programs making schools safer, fighting crime and helping the handicap. As Rick Blair, National Chief Referee, stated in his award presentation speech, Chris and Kurt are true representatives of the thousands of young people in our program who are more than simply terrific competitors, they are also upstanding citizens and we are proud to call them AAU Taekwondo athletes! *AAU Taekwondo Handbooks Now Online It's easy to know the rules.
