I do agree with their mission. Unforturnately,  it is true that some instructors and practioners do not practice the philosophy and the art of  Taekwondo itself. However, I must interject. My Grandmaster. , Grandmaster Hong  who is Korean , promotes nothing but the philosophies and the history of TKD. When we are being tested, our oral exams consist not only of explaining stances, but Korean terminology and meanings of the belts, the dobok, both the Korean and the American flags. We are also required to write essays (for the 1st gup and up). Written exams are required as well.  I am very proud to be under Grandmaster Hong's wing. He is a noble and yet humble man. He has been practicing Taekwondo for 35 or so years. (He knows, not only Taeguk Poomsea but others as well. ) He has inspired many students to continue practicing and go on to Tournaments as well. It is a very well balanced system he teaches. Blessings Joni  Andreozzi -Lowney2nd Gup ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. Hello Gaby (most folks on the list use first names, I hope you don't mind): The difference of hard v/s soft v/s hard-soft is often related to linear and circular. Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, and Karate Do are often referred to as hard and linear styles. On the other hand, Kuk Sool, Hap Ki Do, Kong Shin Bup, and Aiki Do type martial arts are often referred to as hard/soft styles (Kwan Yu Sool). Many folks look to Tai Chi and some other Gung Fu arts as soft styles. My personal take on this is that hard styles often (not always) block with force (usually linear), while hard/soft styles often (not always) deflect and trap (often circular). All of this is subject to the individual interpretation of the leaders of styles. For example, the Go Ju martial art, by its very name, is hard soft; however, most Go Ju practitioners I have seen in this area do not use soft applications. Perhaps evolution has erased some of the art. In the end, this is just my few pennies on a subject that is open to many interpretations. They pass people for their belts no matter if they do bad or good. I saw them pass two people for BB that did not deserve it (that's also a long story). They claim to teach self defense, which is not the case. It's all sport, and a belt factory. Nothing wrong with sport, but the fact that they charge way too much, pass out belts like they are fries, make you sign a three year contract, and claim stuff that's not true is BAD. So, I'm back to the Moo Duk Kwan :o) Laurie _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Wed, 08 Jan 2003 12:50:28 -0700 From: "A.garcia" Organization: USA Tae Kwon Do To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] 4 WEEKS TO AUSTIN TKD GAMES 2003 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "MARK YOUR CALENDARS" Register on line at; http://www.USATKDTX.com/tourn-registration.htm Dear; Competitors, Instructors, Masters, Grandmasters and Tae Kwon do families "AUSTIN TAE KWON DO GAMES" WILL BE HELD IN AUSTIN TX. Now granted, he's from the old-school bare knuckle days when the "point fighting" had a lot more contact than what you see out there today. Is that what you mean when you say "full contact"? Speaking of Norris...does anybody know if he ever got his black belt from the Machados? I know he was/is a brown belt under them for a good long while, and was just wondering if he had made it to black. He's a very impressive man. This has lead to an emphasis on positioning, footwork, and counterstriking (not being where your opponent expects you to be), which is a "softer approach" than limb-to-limb blocking. My dojang doesn't really get into the finer tactics and elite conditioning that competition oriented schools do, but we recently got an object lesson in the futility of blocking (some kinds of)kicks. A 7th gup student was sparring a 4th gup, and executed a textbook "outer forearm block" (wax on - wax off) against an incoming, relatively high-power roundhouse (turning kick to ITF'ers). Snapped the pinky-side bone in his forearm...
