Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have been studying taekwondo for 12 years, and we did (hyung and poomsee),breaking and sparring(WTF style). One or three step sparring before the exams  were teached to us.Because the orientation now in TKD is for competiton style my school is concentrating only on sparring and has neglected all other things in TKD. And as you know a competition fighter is not a street fighter. Even, there are a lot of kicks that  have not been introduced to us even blocks, low kicks. ground fighting and throws and weapons I have never seen in TKD. Yesterday my master a 6 dan TKD told me that TKD is a complete martial art. Believe me I was surprised and confused and we argue a lot about  this issue I told him hapkido,kuksoolwon,hwarangdo... are complete martial arts but i have never heard about TKD as complete one.Maybe he knows more than I do because he is 6dan or  maybe he has contact with other korean masters. So if anyone have an answer to this subject I would be pleased to answer me soon.gaby ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. I wonder, with the risk of people finding me an arrogant youngster, how much time and effort Master West has actually put in the study of the so-called soft martial arts. So just a quick question, how does master West think he'll stay harder/quicker than the average (younger) attacker once he is 60, 70 or 80+???? I believe (and so I was told) that no matter how hard you train, you'll become weaker/slower when your older. And there comes a moment when the 'I'll hit you harder/quicker'-attitude won't be of much help anymore. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Chris LaCava" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 09 Jan 2003 08:58:23 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Snail Mail Threats and Chubby Wubby Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray T: <> BudoSeek has been pretty calm. But you can't find a line between the two. The difference between a strike and a block is mostly attitude, not necessarily technique. A crescent kick, a circular technique is used mostly in an offensive manner. If you have ever been thrown by a skilled judo player you will not think the technique was very soft as you are laying flat on your back. When thinking of soft techniques, many think of an art such as taichi, with slow movements and non-aggressive basic motion, but even taichi has striking techniques. Are hard techniques then anything that can lay you flat on your back or break something? If that is true, then all martial arts are hard. So to distinguish between hard and soft is not really a good way to describe technique. Often people use these terms, hard and soft, to describe martial arts, or they place them in other categories such as Ki arts or non-Ki arts. But we are trying to compare apples and oranges when we do that. No martial art is better than another. No style is better than other styles. There are simply two types of martial arts, good teachers and bad teachers. I have often sent students to study another martial art when they move to a different town because I know the quality of the teacher and I know that they will learn more and improve their technique even though they are studying a completely different martial art. 5 years ago when my wife and I moved from Texas to the Midwest, I had no intentions of teaching hapkido full time or even having my own dojang, I was happy in the insurances business. But, I could not find a teacher who I could learn from here. Now we are the only full time hapkido dojang in the entire Cincinnati tri-state area of IN, KY and OH. But, I still get calls all the time asking if we are a hard or soft style of hapkido. Just my opinion. Jere R. Is this narmal in some TKD dojangs?" Does he teach the WTF Black belt forms along with the TSD Black Belt forms? If so, then I can say that is not too unusual. We learn Neibojin (Naihanch) forms as well as Lo Pei (Lo Hi) form as black belts. However, we learn the WTF as well. In order for you to be promoted in WTF, you have to know WTF forms. Now if he doesn't teach WTF BB forms, then I would have to say that is quite unusual. Jeremy __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. If this is a student of the "Chubby Hapkido GM" then you are not doing him a service by making an empty threat to Ray. If anything you are just justifying the opinoins that many folks have of him, by showing how cowardly YOU are. Because it is never a bad student, just a bad instructor.
