Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net When I think about how people think young guys are fast and old guys are slow,, and how some people have awesome skill and some people don't, I harp back to my old linebacker days and think about how many guys used to come out to play and they would be awesome physical specimens and were fast and strong, but somehow when it came down to the meat and potatoes of battle they would fade off in the distance,, it ALL boils down to what an old grizzled football coach told me once that had come back from Vietnam and coached us linebackers, he says boys I don't want to hear about how big or fast or good you are I want to see if you will bite, you guys are like a bunch of dogs and if a dog don't bite when he is a puppy then he ain't gonna bite when he's older... beware of the dog that bites whether he is young or old, and I think that might be what J.R. was alluding to when he talked about how he was gonna hit you quicker and harder then you were gonna hit him!! Talk is cheap when the rubber hits the road. My guess is GM West will be smarter and that is what whens any altercation. Pray that you will be as good if you ever reach his level. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > there comes a moment when the > 'I'll hit you harder/quicker'-attitude won't be of much help anymore. Reminds me of the invitation that I got last weekend to step into the ring with a boxer who outweighs me by 100 pounds and is at least 20 years younger. "Only if I get to fight -my way-" was my reply. In general though, if/when the chips degrade with age ... strategy is supposed to be superior. That may include drawing your weapon(s ;-) __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. However, if it was, let me just say thank you for your compliments. I understand that people of weak minds will always be the way they are. I missed the original post that he sent regarding this matter (some of the DD's end up in my Bulk Mail folder in YAHOO and I usually just empty it without looking). With that said let me just say this. I consider Ray (I assumed the letter was directed towards him) a friend, though I have never met him in person. He was there to help me start my own MA list and give me advice after I was....ummm...voted of the island.net. ;) So when I hear some jerk-off...ooops! Sorry....I mean some shipseki (those who know Korean will know this word) make anonymous threats towards a friend of mine, I am quick to react and let them know what a coward they are. I am kown for opening my mouth too much and placing my foot in it (I have gotten very use to the taste of Rebooks). So as I appreciate the post and advice, I will continue making such comments until the chickensh....I mean dumbas..I mean person either comes forward or just disappears. :) Jeremy Talbott __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Having known Master West for some time now and being his student and friend, I can tell you that, like myself (being in the "I voted for Abe Lincoln" age group) that one of the best natural advantages one has as they get older is that they seem to not only know more, but are more likely to use what they know, in the most effective method possible, with the least amount of effort. I tell my students that my natural advantage is that I am old and mean, and I am a pussycat compared to Master West. never take anything at face value, Rich HodderGet more from the Web. Bruce: good to hear things are slowly getting back to normal...." Thanks. I have been working on four different projects at the same time. Not moving very quickly but it keeps my mind occupied! :-) College classes start soon and I am investigating the possibility of adding a Korean sword class as well as possibly advocating for the addition of a Korean language class at the college. They already have Spanish and Japanese so I may have a chance to get something started. BTW: I will be posting the announcement for Master Wests' Internationale to my website in the next week or so. I don't KNOW this for a fact but I am going to guess that it is at this point in your post that you touch on the importance of training under a person whose character development matches his martial skill. I can remember someone telling me that "Life is just too short to make all of your own mistakes yourself." I believe what they were telling me was that it is important to get with a teacher who can be trusted and use THEIR experience as a springboard to develope further yet. Personally I take a page from Korean history itself. Historically the Korean military was not meant as an instrument of foreign policy. Rather it was more along the lines of a National Guard and intended primarily for keeping slaves and Farmers inline for the landed aristocracy. What this meant was that not a small portion of a Korean warriors' duties was to negotiate and peace-keep as well as fight. I know a lot of guys on these Nets get impatient with this sort of "talk-first" approach as though talking things out is a sign of weakness or fear. But the fact is, even if one HAS the skill to go in and consistently bully people into doing ones' bidding that only lasts as long as a person can back up what they are doing with force. And remember those old gunslingers of the Wild West? Their biggest fear wasn't getting in a gun-fight when they were young and full of juice, it was getting bushwacked when they were older and slower. >From all of this I conclude that I will continue to get out on the mat with kids half my age and continue to polish my skills. It won't be because I have something to prove or someone to impress. I figure my life isn't over yet so until it is I just adjust the pace a pinch and keep going. Best Wishes .... oh and thanks for sharing your wisdom. I bet thats why Ray keeps you and JR around, ne? :-) Bruce --__--__-- Message: 12 Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 14:43:42 -0800 (PST) From: Marathon Medic To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Flexibility form Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello everyone. A couple of years ago I saw a documentary on a cable network (I think it was the Discovery Channel) about martial arts. As part of their discussion, they mentioned chinese weapons forms, the "death touch", and a flexibility form, as well as several other things. I want to find some info about this flexibility form. They had a woman demonstrating at least part of the form and mentioned that it took several years to master. It did not have any kicks or strikes, but was instead a series of flexibility positions such as side splits while standing then falling to the ground while still in the split position. Does anyone know anything about this form? Got a copy of the video or other record of it? Any suggestions on how to find it? Thanks.
