What may seem like the "good ole days" of Taekwondo will never come again. All Taekwondo schools don't teach for competition only, and many school instructors who stress competition also teach the same forms and philosophy they learned from their own instructors. There are probably as many different kinds of "traditional" Taekwondo as there were students of the old masters, intermediate masters, and later masters. Soon there will be more traditions learned by students of today's instructors (like our own Melinda of Chajonshim, for one). Practice YOUR art as you choose, but always remember it's only yours - no other person has learned as you did, no other knows it exactly as you do. Be like water, my friend. Hear's what I told him and I'd like 2have ur views on it. "First its not interesting/gleefull shedding wt. but if u must, start approx. 7wks prior to the tournament. "Start by much reducing intake of heavy foods and at the same time, take lots of fluid; fruits&water. This helps u lose mass but generally maintain wt. and u don't look gaunt :) "2wks b4 competition, along with training, start easy paced jogging wearing nylon track suit, start eating prudently and rest 3days to it. All this while, keep an eye on ur wt. Results guaranteed." Anyone has other drills to wt. shedding? Timi D. 2Dan. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. (I have been told that procedure has changed and that currently only USTU is supposed to be allowed this privilege, but do not know specifics.) It is certainly possible that a Korean-born 9th Dan, for instance, might still be able to go directly to Kukkiwon with a certificate request and have it approved." Kukkiwon certified 4th dan and above are considered dan recommenders and can promote up to one dan below their rank directly through Korea. Several years back, for a brief period, you could promote to your own dan. The USTU is the NGB but does not have enough of a percentage on dan examiners going through them to have this sole right to process Kukkiwon certification, although you can go through them. The USTU also keeps a portion of this fee, so some of the money stays in the US. Process time through Korea is only about a month depending upon the dan you are recommending, 5th dan and up may take longer. Ideally, 8th and 9th dan promotions are suppose to be conducted in Korea. Now (post-80s), Dan certificates themselves vary by rank. 1-4th are the same; 5-7th are the same, and as of last year, 8th-9th are the same. 5th dan and up are signed by the president of the Kukkiwon. [I thing this change in certificate at 5th dan is a reason some though 5th dan might signify master rank versus 4th.] I know this because I have helped some deserving others (who have been told fiction or unable to get them locally) get their Kukkiwon. If you are a USTU member or can support this organization, do so. However, you are not tied to this organization to get Kukkiwons. Best. Dana PS: Dave Steffan. This is why people who practice balanced "ways" can continue to do their thing long after those who practice burnout ways start to creak and sputter out. Lifestyle is a major determinant: proper nutrition/exercise (food is fuel and building materials, nothing more, nothing less), proper rest, proper recreation, proper sleep, proper mental attitude(s), proper livelihood. Something like that . . . so that in some people degradation can become a "non-issue" . . . one can be gray and have the physiology of youth. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. I am another one who has paid attention to this sort of subject over the years, and I can say that I have never heard of North Koreans doing such a thing in the Korean War. We should recall that the northern army was not really in the south for very long, and would not have had much time to do such things. Also, until MacArthur's surprise invasion at Incheon, the northerners thought that they were taking over the south and reuniting all of Korea; they would not have had the any incentive to weaken the south long- term in any way. Until their retreat, and it's safe to assume that they were in a hurry with other things on their mind. Popular theory has the national energy running south- ward from Paektu-san to Chiri-san along the "Paektu- daegan" line of peaks. It would be interesting to know/speculate whether or not during the last fifty years the north has driven iron spikes into any peaks of the T'aebaek-sanmaek (Range) just above the DMZ, to cripple the South's vitality. If they did, it is obviously not working... good data to disprove the theory at last :-) We know that the Pyongyang authorities have strongly revived the symbol of Tan-gun as national founder, and regard Paektu-san and Myohyang-san as "holy" places. Have any of you North-Korea watchers ever seen them using the Paektu-daegan concept...? Best regards for 4336, David Mason ===== David A. My master is 55 and has the respect of everyone who he teaches. What makes me laugh is when you get the 'know it alls' (males 99% of the time) who think that just because he is older, he will be easier to 'defeat', be this in sparring or knife defense work. The look on their faces when he disarms them and puts them on their butts is priceless. Needless to say they have an awful lot more respect towards him after that and think twice before they try anything! sincerely.
