Found it on ThatsRacin.com. Earnhardt Jr. excited about role in jiujitsu event By JIM UTTER ThatsRacin.com Writer Dale Earnhardt Jr., one of NASCAR's most popular drivers, has moved into the role of promoter. Earnhardt Jr. is using his interest in the sport of Jiu Jitsu to launch the inaugural Dale Earnhardt Jr. Grappling Classic, set for Jan. 25 at Cabarrus Arena in Concord, N.C. "I'm happy to be a part of something that will surely impact the sport of Jiu Jitsu," Earnhardt Jr. said. "What started out as conversation between me and a couple of buddies has turned into a huge competition that will bring a ton of exposure to this exciting, unique sport." The tournament is the brainchild of Joe Hurst, 2001 Jiu Jitsu world champion, and Garrett Barger, a N.C. state trooper and Jiu Jitsu student. Competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues throughout the day. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 3 to 12. That post rings so true, but then as you know from reading the above book and our conversations, we had a lot in common, I was just going through the same stuff a few years after you did. And both of us wised up and are living more productively now and helping others with our experiences. For those that have never been there, violence, fighting and hurting others can become addicting. I remember once when younger when my dad once remarked that at one time in his life nothing felt better than smashing someone. Later, I understood, it was at this time that for stress relief or when something was bothering me, I'd go to the bars and look for trouble just to let some steam off. (And being in Korea with lots of bars full of young dumb drunk GIs, finding trouble was not difficult) The adrenaline high was like a drug I suppose. I've never done drugs, but I'm guessing from what I have read and learned from others, it is similar. It was also having something to prove back then. Still not sure just what I was proving, but it must have been important at the time, since I sure thought I had to prove it. Most people know that guys go looking for women, especially young guys, and especially young tough GIs. Well, we would look for fights the same way. Both had a draw, both addicting, etc. The best possible night back then was to smash someone and then go find someone to spend the night with.... Not proud of those times, but for a number of years, that was the lifestyle I was in. Again, there are many people reading this that will not understand it. Unless you have been there, it is hard to really know what I mean. Luckily, many who go through this grow out of it. Unfortunately some don't, and by never "growing up" they end up dead, crippled or in jail. You just can't keep going on like that forever and not sooner or later have disastrous effects. While not as old as some here, I do have a few miles, and fortunately have learned from them and hope my experiences can help others. Michael Chiaet, passing on some wisdom from his father. Mike was a former Marine and my training partner while I was living in Japan. He told this a couple times when telling how he would start messing with his dad when younger and his dad would say that just before showing him he wasn't quite big enough yet. (All done in fun, since Mike has a very good relationship with his dad) Yours in Training, Alain www.burrese.com --__--__-- Message: 5 From: ABurrese@aol.com Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 00:32:12 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Jeremy T's post Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jeremy, As a friend, I caution you in using inappropriate language on the forum. If you would not post it in English, why post it in Korean? Is it not just as bad and offensive to those who understand that language? And yes, listening to me talk when I was a younger GI, you know that I can't really be offended by anything said. However, I know many that can, and thus try to eliminate such uses. I too think it cowardly to send Ray a threat in the mail. (or to threaten in any fashion such as mail, phone, e-mail, etc.) But getting riled up and using offensive language and such just makes the person who made the threat feel better. Gives that person a bigger sense of power and accomplishment. After all, he must be important to get so many people angry. Not that I'm above getting angry, it was not so long ago that an e-mail threat to me, that also bashed others I respect, had me ticked and on the phone to the person who sent it. (At least I knew where it came from) But I'm trying to get so those things don't bother me at all. At least I'm not getting in the face of everyone who looks at me funny anymore. (right Rudy?) So I'm getting better. Please take this in the spirit that it is written, just some advice from someone who has also stuck his foot in his mouth a few too many times.... Now before you start tuning-up, please remember that the DT folks are disposed towards primarily Japanese and Okinawan arts. That said, perhaps the tenor of the article will be predictable. All the same I think folks are well- served when they get a chance to keep ALL views in their awareness and avoid any form of tunnel-vision. BTW#1: This same edition of DT also has a survey article on Chinese military manuals (see pg 24. Since Chinese military culture was every bit as influential to the development of Korean traditions as the Japanese influence, folks may want to take a moment and check out this offering by Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo. BTW#2: Thomas Chen et al are offering some pretty insightful material on the relationships between Korean sword tradition and Gen. Qi, Ji-huang and the manuals he wrote. I don't understand. What I would call my "prime weight" is where I am the strongest ... and I hover around that weight within 3 pounds in either direction (for decades now). My question is really motivated by the approaches used to cause this short-term weight change advocated before tournament competitions. For example, nylon suits primarily increase fluid loss ... the weight loss is therefore deceptive ... and possibly contradictory to athletic success. Ample hydration of muscle tissue is essential for msucle action. Decreasing the fluid load of the body ultimately = decreased fluid content of muscle. When the fluid content of muscle decreases muscles cannot contract properly/efficiently/optimally. This is why we need to maintain hydration during heavy training sessions. Decreased fluid volume also includes decreased blood volume. Decreased blood volume causes increased heart rate. It's not nice to frick around with Nature :-) Humble advice: look at the lonf term big picture and structure life so that it is not necessary to chase unnecessary and possibly counterproductive changes. This reflects lifestyle discipline, and discipline is key. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. My rank test is April 5 and I have to do a running spin kick. I need to lose a little more weight by this time so that I have the speed and balance needed. I was told that weight does not matter but my balance seems to be off. Any suggestions?
