I left the last "Academy " where i was expecting to pay $85 a month for lessons. My 1st Dan test, we were in a school auditorium with about 150 students being tested by 4 masters, who all sat at least 60 feet away from the student in the rear. How well did they see everyone who was testing? Needless to say I am now in a school with a lot less students, paying way less money, getting way better instruction and having a helluva lot more fun. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "rich hodder" To: "Dojang Digest" Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 18:53:51 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Jackson Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hey there all, Finally I will be staying in the Headquarters Hotel this year. Is it true Alain, you're buying the first round??? Hope you have deep pockets and lots of patience. As I remember, we overwhelmed the bartender last year. Look forward to seeing all the DD folks and the rest of the assorted mutants there. In the mean time, have fun. Rich HodderGet more from the Web. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Master Timmerman wrote in part: <<<>> Well said! As a full time hapkido teacher, I would like to add my two cents in on this subject: The priest in the church down the street makes his living through the church - he is not questioned near as much as I am as to why we do this for a living. My education is an architect and I spent 15 years in the insurance claims business. I do not do this to get rich - I took a pay cut. I am not comparing myself to a priest other than that we both have our chosen vocations and we both provide a VALUE ADDED SERVICE (although we both could make more money doing something else). I recently raised our monthly tuition to $65 a month for classes 6 days a week and I got some slack for it. We have no billing service, no joining fees, no contracts, no limit to how many classes you attend, private lessons are free, etc, and I am still perplexed at this notion of commercialism vs. part time! We are still a traditional dojang. I spent 21 years as a non-profit teacher without taking any income. Now I teach full time. Both times it took one thing to keep the dojang doors open - Money. Now I just get paid less!:) I must say, that unless someone has taught full time, one does not know what it is like. Besides the obvious fact that I now work out more in one day than I ever did in a week; there are many other benefits to teaching and training daily. I now teach 5 classes a day at the dojang (or elsewhere just to help pay the bills). Before I taught about 6 classes a week. BIG DIFFERENCE! I noticed within 6 months the difference in my technique. When I started training in 1974 I now can state that I AM VERY GLAD that my teacher taught full time as I attended classes 6 days a week and my training stayed that way through college. Bruce is an old friend and I know he was talking about the McDojang's and McDojang Organizations, but the notion that teaching the martial arts full time is in any form or shape a negative one, is ridiculous. I now have been at the dojang for 14 hours today and I am going to call it a day. But before I do, I would like to tell anyone that is considering teaching martial arts full time to be sure that is what you want to do and to be sure that you have the experience to do it. Then by all means, enjoy yourself. In the end, it is a VERY rewarding profession. Jere R. And you are correct the bartender was not up to par last year. Perhaps we should find a friendly room and make our own drinks :) See you all in March!!! Looking forward to the DD pic and great training.
