Richards Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray/West Hello there, and thanks for the interest in my folks. Ya'll just wanna throw us around eh? The correct term would be "LA Personz" since my fience' is planning on coming also. She might be a brown belt by that time. If she passes....Here is the Miss Seminar Outlook for us so far: Amanda's parents work overseas in Bahrain (by Saudi Arabia, doesn't that suck) and will be coming in about the same time the seminar is. If they do come to LA that weekend, we will have to stay and hang out with them. However, I am a fan of preregistering, which means we would forfeit our entry fees, or have to fork over 40 extra bucks for at the door registration, which I am not too fond of. I do know the deadline is like on the 21st of FEB I think, so I will let you know definitly if I send the check. Until then, keep your fingers crossed on seeing my short gi. I would like to bring Nathan with me, but I am sure his attendance will be highly funds dependant, being that we are all college students....broke college students. Keep eyes posted, I'll fill you in. I can't wait to meet you guys. About these rounds everyone is buying... C Richards, thanks for including me in one of your posts. I was keeping up with it somewhat, sometimes 435 posts on the same topic can tend to make you pass them up without fully reading. Tuition is an important topic in teaching. My recent fee increase came at a good time, when everyone can see my putting more effort into school upkeep and improvements, and they know I am getting more and more serious about making this a full time school, so they don't mind helping a person dedicated to something they love. I have a good group of folks. I have bad ones too of course, but the good ones make up for them. I am trying to figure out how to take credit cards in my school without having to invest a fortune in machines and filling out 5 books of paper work. How has Credit cards helped or hurt ya'lls schools? YITMA, Charlie Veuleman ===== ------------------------------------- L. There has been no other experience like this art in my entire life of 46 yrs. I hope to have earned the Black Belt within 1 to 1 1/2 yrs, but that will come when it does; when I'm ready. When I began to learn TKD, I was in pretty good shape fitness wise. But now, my overall fitness has improved as a result of training. So...anyway. You have some awesome pics and it is put together very well. I have two comments/questions: 1. Where was C.G. in your pics?...... 2. Under your 9 Main Rules of Sin Moo Hapkido, "Healthy Sex"?? Is this stressed to ALL Sin Moo Hapkido students, even kids? Or is this a joke and I'm just not getting it? All in all, I really like your new site. Fred Without knowing the whole situation my comments may be off base, but I will respond based on my own experience over the past 10 years. First, you should know that I still get corrected on my front stances and I am an adult second Dan. I am fairly certain that none of my technique is perfect. My instructor is very traditional and he demonstrates the side kick in the exact same manner whether he is showing it to a 5 year old or to me. Whether the 5 yr old or I are capable of executing the technique is of secondary importance. It is more important for us to see the proper technique demonstrated consistently as often as possible so we know what the ultimate goal is. Then, we spend our life as martial artists in pursuit of the goal. Does this sound too deep of a concept for a 5 year old? Not really, if you consider that we send that same 5 year old to school where they are shown examples of perfect penmanship when they learn to write the alphabet. The best thing about being a martial artist is that you have your whole life to improve your technique and you do not have to compare yourself to anyone except yourself. We have a sign in our school that reads "Compare to yourself and win!". If you are unsure about the instructor, look for qualities of consistency, proper technique, patience and attitude instead of focusing on whether your son has mastered a technique after 2 weeks of class. If the instructor is good, he/she will encourage him to do the best he can and not intimidate or pressure him to do what he is not physically ready to do. As for board breaking for kids - I have seen hundreds of kids break boards in our school and never a single injury. This is because the instructor never lets them break more than they can handle and the boards are generally small and light enough that there is no injury even if poor technique is used. I have, however, seen board break injuries among some adults, who insist on attempting things that they are not ready to do. Hope this helps. Why did he close his school? It was a new dojang, he had just moved from Trenton to the Philly area. He was traveling a lot, teaching seminars, and (I suspect) was having difficultly keeping the dojang running when he was gone. i.e. given it was a new location he had mostly beginning students, didn't have senior students to keep the dojang running when he was out of town.
