DO NOT RUSH BACK INTO KICKING AND STRETCHING!!! I made a serious mistake after tearning my groin while leading a workout at the 1990 NKMAA CAN-AM CLASSICS tournament. Being extremely foolish, I competed in the tournament and injured it further. Later that evening I could barely walk. 4-5 weeks later I started to workout and strained it again. It finally healed but too much scar tissue was formed to allow me to re-gain my previous flexability. Too make a long story short.....LET IT HEAL. I'd also advise avoiding the lined pants. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 18:18:01 -0800 (PST) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] 10 Rules plus etiquette Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray: Been lurkin and jurkin. New career and life. Not too much time to train, but in the future yes. Will build an outside gym in my new 3200 sq. ft. home on 1.5 acres. Love the basics. Down in T town a lotta yucks and lotta f's. Anyway, I read this what u wrote (on what the GM said as his basic tenets), re: < - Good Food (no chicken, pork, scaleless fish, alcohol) - Good Sex - Good Meditation - No Anger - No Grief - No Greed - Good Sunshine - Breathing gently to filter the air - No hot/cold liquids on your molars (reduces ki) Am I able to follow all the above? Ummm, well, ummm... Ray Terry> My response sequentially: Good food= sorry, love chicken and many chicken dishes in Korean restaurants; scaleless fish ?= what about that morning soup over in Pusan after bar hoppin ? And, man I need the booze. Sorry to those high fallutin' tea totalers. I like the Tao and a nice Makers Mark. Good sex= oh yeah. For old farts, a new blue pill and Muse is the way to go. Good meditation= yes, but the Beatles wrote about the fool on the hill. Anger= maybe, but anger got me where I am. Anger is a good motivator. Who wants to be a wimp. I love that Douglas movie where he is angry at the world. Now, I am more mellow, but if directed right-- anger can have you achieve. In order to achieve you need motivators. Being angry and pissed off is a great motivator. Compare that to being content, fat and dumpy. Like eatin a lot of guacomoli (sic), dip, and pizzza on Super Bowl Sunday, farting, gettin fat, and being happy. Where is the motivation ? No Grief= Sorry, we all experience that. You have to build off the grief to be stronger. When I got dumped by some chick, I was angry. But I used it to get a nicer looking chick. See, motivation ! No Greed= right, tell those "No check, just cash" Grand Masters that. Good sunshine= agree. But, us fair skinned white boys need lots of shade on the beach down in the Carribean. Or use SPF 30. Good stuff. Breathing= right, try that in downtown LA (and that ain't lower Alabama). No hot/cold on your molars= what, no booze or morning coffee ? I can't survive that man. Anyway, back to other stuff. Bye, Big Ken P.S. Etiquette is good. But taken to the extreme and you have a bunch of lemmings following whatever bull the GM is handing out. Meaning= don't question since that is bad etiquette. I think common sense and street smart training should replace etiquette training. But, if in another country you certainly want to follow local customs and proper etiquette. For example, when in Angeles City or Pusan always tip the ladies (or men)=they are working hard. TKD is new to me, and I'm on this list to learn, but I have a fair amount of Japanese Shotokan Karate-do experience, and can speak from that background. In my experience, students test when the instructor arranges for a testing. I would think it would be bad manners to even bring up the subject of testing before the instructor does, or to refuse to test when the instructor desires that you test. One of the differences I've picked up on so far (again, pardon my ignorance), is that compared to my background in karate, TKD folks seem somewhat obsessed with belts and testing. Looking at the syllabus at the local TKD school, I was flabbergasted to see how many belts they have, and within each level there are three sub-levels where you have to earn some kind of stripe to append to your belt. I believe I was told that ordinarily people are expected to test every three months. I have been working out at a local shotokan school for about a year, and in that time the shotokan school has not had a single test. That is in line with the other shotokan schools I've trained with too. In my experience it seems like we have a testing around once a year. For me at least, I find that the whole concept of belts and testing detracts from the task at hand: learning and improving. We seem to live in a society that focuses on short-term goals or benefits to the detriment of long-term goals or benefits. For me, martial arts is a long term (read lifetime) matter, and I'm happy to test whenever the instructer desires, and wont give it a second thought until then. I've read a lot lately about test jitters too. In my view, test jitters come from the belief that belts and testing mean something - like it's some kind of judgement - Pass the test and celebrate or fail the test and feel like the scum of the earth. Pass or fail, we are still the same martial artist following our same path. Thank you for a great list. I'm sure I will be much richer for being a part of this community.
