I really want to keep my five year old in this dojang because the instructor at the YMCA runs his class like "Romper Room"! I see the other kids practice and I see various levels of skill among the same age and belt ranks. I want my kid to be better than the others, and I think my son will rise to my expectations. For a yellow belt, I think he should know how to move forward and backward in a front stance, three basic forearm blocks, a lunge punch (just because thats the technique used in the first hyung), and the basic motion of a front kick. I also want him to know the Korean terms for said techniques. So far, after two weeks of training in class and at home with me, he can perform the three blocks, and a lunge punch, and he understands how to move forward in a front stance. He is really putting effort into doing a front kick. Oh, and for my son to put effort into anything is a milestone by itself! He also knows that IN NAE means patience and that Tae Kwon Do originated in Korea. The instructor also teaches Hapkidoish like "self defense routines", twenty of them. I admit I'm skeptical about these routines. I have never been grabbed or attacked in a manner which the instructor is teaching defenses for. However, I have been sucker punched, groin attacked, and tackled a few times and I used my TKD skills to defend myself, why does the instructor teach something other than TKD for self defense? I have not seen any certification to back up his "Hapkido". I am not knocking Hapkido, please do not misunderstand me. Fred __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Although Sparring is one portion of a system, there are many others, Self Defense, Forms etc... Fighting is both a natural ability and a learned ability. It's entirely possible that a Black Belt could be defeated by a 7th Gup with great natural fighting ability or superior timing, better conditioning etc... I tend the think of the belt systems as a measurement of how a student progresses in learning the curriculum or syllabus of the art. The actual application of the art relies on many factors such as skill, athletic ability, quality training, dedicated self-practice, attitude, experience etc... You could give a gun to 100,000 people, but it's not likely every single one of them will have the ability or gumption to pull the trigger and kill someone even if they're life depended on it., just as some won't be able to draw to save their lives.... I think the most important thing is how you grow and develop as you journey along your martial arts path... Just an opinion. Good Lord, are we off topic! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Normally I wouldn't even reply to this message but it got kind of under my skin. Besides, it's a lot easier to say something in passing like Bruce did than to actually refute it. Sigh. Long OT post ahead. Bruce Sims wrote: >>Where Buddhism is concerned Sex has none of the energy that one finds in more Judeo-Christian oriented societies. If you ever get a chance read Elaine Pagels ADAM, EVE AND THE SERPENT" from Random House Publ. The Christian doctors of the Church did a real J-O-B on generations to follow.<< As someone getting a Ph.D. in Theology I find this idea regarding the Christian view of sexuality all too common, and all too inaccurate. I do know something about Elaine Pegals and can safely say that she is not exactly what you would consider an unbiased scholar. For example, in the book Bruce referred to her treatment of St. Augustine’s misunderstanding of the sin of Adam is laughable. He never denied free will in man, and her treatment of Adam’s offspring being “in the semen” misses the point that Original Sin is simply passed on by procreation. Sex is not bad, nor are children. Original Sin is not something ontologically positive. Instead it is simply the absence of sanctifying grace (which God freely gave to Adam and Eve, which they lost at the Fall, and which he freely does not give to their offspring). As for her assertion that she has shown Jesus was conceived in the “normal manner,” all I can say is that she is an obvious adherent to deconstructionism and refuses to read the texts as we have them. "Let me tell you what it REALLY says." Please spare me. She should invest some time in reading Ignace de la Potterrie work on Mary. He clearly demonstrates that the infancy narratives in the Gospel according to St. Luke are of a Semitic character in an otherwise Hellenistic book. Additionally, they are the kind of narrative that is from a first hand account. In other words, de la Potterrie argues that the author was taking dictation from the person directly involved (i.e., Mary of Nazareth). Why isn’t this a more widely known view? Because knocking Christianity sells product and makes good copy these days. What’s more, she seems to consider Gnosticism as a kind of “pristine” state of Christianity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gnosticism was not a purely Christian movement. There were also Jewish Gnostics. What they all had in common, besides a reliance on “secret knowledge” that could save the select few, was their hatred of the material world. And hatred is the right word for it. All matter, they believed, was created by the evil demi-urge. Hence, your body was evil in itself and your soul (which was spirit and therefore good) had to be freed from it. Because of this view sexual intercourse was viewed as something evil and was avoided by the “spirituals.” Marriage and procreation were strictly forbidden. Recreational sex was OK for the “psychics” (the people lower than the spirituals but higher than the lowest level, all of which were un-savable) but had to be contraceptive in nature (or abortive). It was the orthodox Christians who defended the dignity of marriage and of the sexual act. This doesn’t mean that their views were the same as those of the average 21st century American. Far from it. However, they upheld the indissolubility of the marriage covenant, the goodness of sex within marriage, and the goodness of sex in general. Some did so more eloquently that others, but I know of NO Father of the Church that said sexual intercourse was evil, wrong, etc. I’d be interested in seeing some quotes to the contrary (they could be out there, but I sure haven’t run across them). That being said, celibacy was held to be a higher state than marriage, but not for the same reasons as the Gnostics. Instead, celibacy in and of itself was no use. Only celibacy for the sake of the kingdom (i.e., in order to fully dedicate yourself to God like both Jesus and St. Paul state in the New Testament) was meritorious. In essence you were giving up a legitimate good (marriage, children, etc.) for a HIGHER good. One more thing, a quote from Origen, one of the earliest Christian theologians: “Even the man who withholds himself from his wife, oftentimes makes her an adulteress, when he does not satisfy her desires, even though he withholds himself under the appearance of greater gravity and self-control. And perhaps this man who, so far as it rests with him, makes her an adulteress by NOT satisfying her desires, is more culpable than the one who has divorced his wife …” (Commentaries on Matthew, 14, 24). That doesn’t sound negative about sex to me. Just the opposite, really. My apologies for the long post. Chris 4th dan and weary Ph.D. candidate. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Our Hapkido school won 42 Gold, 16 Silver, and 11 Bronze. This was run by Jim Thomas and John Pendegrass from Indiana. The rules changed as we got there, and the guys brought no medals for the competitors. We have yet to get the medals. After spending 1000s to get there, it was quite dissappointing. Does anyone have any information on this event, or its sanctioning. This same group is claiming "The top four in each event will advance to Athen-s Greece in 2004. Our sport will be an opening venue for the Olympic Games as a Demonstrator". I question this. IF anyone with knowledge of this sort of thing would like to investigate, Here are the p-hone numbers to the "head coach": 765-939-0780 (dojo), 765-965- KICK, 808-778-8768 (Cell). Email is coach_jim_thomas@yahoo.com. The Kickkboxing was sanctioned by the International Kickboxing Federation. The center ref was the Founder of the Organization. He had fighters competing, and COACHED them throughout the fight. He gave penalties against other fighters for no reason. Finally, in the championship fight, the Center ref took the scorecards and called it a draw (IT was not, I had people watching the scorers and their cards). I don't share this for any personal reasons, the fighters were not mine. I share it to allow others to be warned, there is a crooked stick in the kickboxing world. If anyone has info on how to launch a formal complaint against the IKF, please let me know. Karate for Christ International --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! But, those who are always engaged in lies and falsifications recklessly have lost their reason as human beings are too unreasonable to argue with. I am writing this statement to clarify the reasons why Mr. Tom MacCallum, Mr. Russell MacLellan, Mr. Tran Quan, Mr. Clinton Norman and Mr. Benny Rivera are continuously giving wild and random expressions to their own ideas. You may have read what Tom made public on the internet on December 23rd last year. As you saw in those writings how much he has got into a fix that he hit upon an idea to publish rubbish full of lies and slanders in the wild hope of winning anybodys sympathy! Then I am going to ask them as follows and give them my answers. - Mr. Tom MacCallum: You were a favourite with our respected General Choi Hong Hi and it was you yourself that pretended to be more faithful to him than anybody, calling him as your father. But you named his last injunctions his desire as soon as he passed away, cast aside your morals and obligations and made your reckless remarks before the wife of late General Choi not to accept his will. Whenever General Choi went on his trip, you followed his steps carrying his luggage in your hands and even on your shoulders sweating all over though you were unhealthy and in order to arouse his appetite you took a pot of garlic peppered bean paste with you for him, a food you westerners dislike. Such faithfulness of yours has been changed on a single day. You who blew your own trumpet that you were a man of integrity above corruption stole 60,000.00 USD from the ITF accounts and took away with a computer and a printer, belongings to the ITF Secretariat to your house. You yourself raised the wages of you and your wife without asking anyone, used the car for Presidents exclusive use as if it were your own and presented 8,000.00 USD, money secured for certificate application from Italy to Mr. Russell for his wages without talking to the ITF treasurer, and its wake, gave him another 8,000.00 USD, thus illegally 16,000.00 USD ITF money presented. How could you pay wages to an individual who was not residing and working at the Secretariat? You who had any post in the ITF Disciplinary Committee went so far as to release faithful ITF senior officers who carry out the will of General Choi from their offices. This makes me suspect you are really crazy. On the day after the Pyongyang Special Congress you asked Mr. Chang Ung to come to the ITF Secretariat soon as possible saying that you would duly respect him as the President as everyone admits him as the President in conformity with the will of our Founder. You expended 4,000.00 USD, ITF money for the expenses of your deluxe hotel and meals for two days while in Mongolia. This is enough to show what a big swindler you are. As we all know, General Choi always bought economy class air-tickets for him whenever on a trip for a seminar and lived in a frugal way at a plain hotel. You showed your private house as if it were an ITF office and asked honest Taekwon-Do people to apply their certificates thereto. You pretend to be still Secretary General despite you were released from it according to the decision of the Vienna council. But who would admit you? - Mr. Russell MacLellan: What avarice has made you get 16,000.00 USD for nothing? What right, qualification and justifiable use have made you receive wages? Did you help yourself to the money regarding it a happy thing without tax despite you are a senior counsel? You pretend to be the President having reversed your won word that you would quietly withdraw from the ITF, asking Mr. Chang Ung to give full display to his ability and talent as the ITF President at the ITF council meeting on November 16th of last year. Mrs. Choi Joon Hi, the wife of late General Choi had definitely testified that though General Choi was on intimate terms with Mr. Russell he has never regarded Mr. Russell as his successor and never breathed a syllable about it. However you invented an excuse that General Choi had appointed you as a senior vice-president at the Directors Council meeting in January last year in the hope that you would be the President in lieu of General Choi if anything might happen to him. You tried to cover up such a swindling by chanting the constitution to justify your acts and to raise your authority. As a result you became a foolish man who has dislocated yourself before the whole world as one who ignores the late General Chois will. The man who founded the Taekwon-Do, the man who wrote the constitution of the ITF himself has left his will which is the very intention and constitution of General Choi. Have you forgotten the fact that you asked earnestly to look after Toms subsequent life, on the occasion of you meeting with Mr. Chang Ung? Despite such a fact, you have changed your mind to unreasonably claim the Presidency. - Mr. Tran Quan: You are spreading the false rumors that the Pyongyang Special Congress was by a political mediation. Pyongyang Special congress was a meeting for executing the will of General Choi Hong Hi at the initiative of 43 members far exceeding one third of the ITF members. Well, who has revealed his political ambition? It is you yourself. You slandered and insulted members participating in the Special Congress that had executed the will of General Choi Hong Hi describing as if it were mediated by a communist regime. -Mr. Clinton Norman: As you were not a council member, you may have not noticed right there that the Pyongyang Special Congress was debated and decided at the Pyongyang Consultative Council and recognized at the provisional Directors Council. But did you really understand the speeches of Mr. Leong Wai Meng, Chairman of ITF Consultative Council and Mr. Kalasnikov, ITF vice-president made at the Congress that it had been decided to call for a Special Congress under the situation prevailing in the ITF? Of the 43 members, only you abstained from proposing the call for Special Congress because only you had not intention to execute the will of General Choi. Then it was 12 hours before the Special Congress was held. You said that Mr. Leong Wai Meng had said in his speech that meeting was not in conformity with the ITF constitution. But why have you dropped out the next words of Mr. Leong Wai Meng who spoke in English that the Special Congress should be called under the present situation of ITF and we should carry out the will of General Choi without fail. And you pretend not to have heard the words of Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha that he recommended Mr. Chang Ung as the ITF President in line with the will of General Choi. All the representatives expressed their approval with thunderous hand clapping and you also clapped yourself. Is it that you are not going to follow the will of General Choi? The Korean Taekwon-Do Committee asked you on many occasions to come to receive your travel money in conformity with your air-ticket. You did not go as you had no face to show up as you opposed the will of General Choi. Notwithstanding this, you are telling the brazen faced lie that you had not received your travel money. As you have been paid, even for your hotel and meals, enough you have not face to bring forth the question of money sordidly in your situation. - Mr Benny Rivera: At the Vienna Council meeting you said that you could not attend the Pyongyang Special Congress and did not know the situation so your view as to the Pyongyang Congress was understood by everybody and Mr. Chang Ung approved your attendance at the Vienna Council. Mr. Chang Ung is not a businessman. He is first Vice-President of the Sports Guidance Committee of DPR Korea and member of IOC. He only introduced the record of his activities at the Olympic arena for securing the international status of ITF since long ago in line with the request of General Choi. You have falsified the fact too much. You had been more indignant than anybody else at the misdeeds by Tom at the meeting of Directors Council in Vienna. The Vienna Council meeting did not ignore the next World Championship in Poland. I must make it clear that it was decided unanimously that Mr. Georgios Stylianidis, Chairman of the ITF Disciplinary Committee should inquire whether Polish Taekwon-Do Association respects the will of General Choi and thus recognized the Pyongyang Special Congress as legal and whether it supports Mr. Chang Ung to be ITF President. In accordance with this decision Pyongyang, DPR Korea would wait as the candidate of the next Championship. There was no mentioning about the financial matters for the Championship. You presented even with a gift to Mr. Chang Ung in respect of him and received from him more than 100 certificate forms. Such being your case you staged a whole course of fabrications of reversing black and white after returning to Puerto Rico. Dear Colleagues, There were in part some not mild expressions in the course of elucidating the facts. But I assure you that my words are only too gentle compared with the fabrications by the schemers who are going to split the ITF. Justice surely wins. Let us all unite and unite to be faithful to the will of General Choi, our founder and teacher thus making our way for the ITF development. Bright is the road ahead of the ITF.
