I purchased a copy of that book (and Alain was kind enough to sign it for me & follow up with me to make sure the copy arrived) and recently read it on a couple of long flights I had to take. As a non-brawler myself, I am thankful for the insight that Alain has taken the time to record. Often times it is easy to get caught up thinking about how you would use your martial arts skills in some fantasy barroom fight...but this book certainly shows that no fights ever go as planned and they are always ugly and potentially fatal. Thanks Alain, for the insight and the great customer service. Hello Fred: Thanks for your interest in NKMAA. Since I am most often away on weekends doing seminars etc. I missed his call. Since I do not have a wife (as many long time practitioners seem without), all I can assume is that your Instructor was in touch with one of my Instructors. I am sure she will let me know the minute I get back to the Dojang on Monday. Regarding the pivot of the round kick. It seems like you enjoy working with your son, and your approach apparently worked well. I should suggest that you and your son's Instructor work together in order to form a solid team. That way, your son will get the benefit of his Instructor's experience as well as your assistance while at home. BTW, best wishes in your own training. Hello Bruce: It is a shame that these events will keep you from being among friends and training in the arts you so enjoy. Things like this are my very reason for despising politics and backstabbing. We'll miss you, and we look forward to next year's seminar. I am Ramon Navarro from the country of Panama. I have been teaching Hapkido for Grand Master Park, SongIL 9th Dan. When I started teaching under him he was a 7th Dan and it has now been 26 years on February 5, 2003. It has been a great experiense and I love it, you can say more than my wife; that is not true but in the the word sence it is equivalent to almost like breathing plus the feeling of love together ! I write to you, even so it will end up being publickly and with great pride. I do not know if it is of feeling that I do this (I realy know) and will share with you and all that end up reading this ! It is to mention that I have a lot of respect for you on behalf of what i have read you write. some ones might say that it is that you are with a grace for writing; i do not know but if i am not mistaken on what I feel as a person when you mean what you write ! I spetialice as a teacher in personalities ! I also used to be an insuranse and a realty broker and did take part in many type of bussiness seminars that included personal relationship and on motivation as on selling. The best sell any man or woman has ever made is their orcan be their marriage. (it can be that many will not understand this I just said) In many of those seminars we heard as lesons that in human relatios it is better than great to a point that it could change a life if you tell someone or anyone the good things about them being alive and not to a relative or friend of that person after he dies. I want to tell you that like yourself there is a lot of people that need to be more humain in this world and I want to congratulate you on your task. Also want to motivate you and the ones that by reading this that you all ought to always remember that the best ones in your personal life in this world are yourselves. Hello Mr. Mc Hie: I too believe that we are much on the same page with this issue; however, I took the opportunity to get the school owner/org. leader's perspective on the issue. My reasons for not wanting to disclose such information has very little to do with my comfort on the issue, it has much more to do with the fact that I am very much opposed to such questions on principle alone. As Master DeWitt said in his last contribution on this subject, I probably DO charge way to little, so I am most certainly not ashamed of my fees nor am I trying to disguise them in a any way. That I give back 50% of test fees to school owners is none of the students' business, and neither is the fact that I charge about half the seminar fees other Masters charge. Am I stupid to do so? Maybe, but I know that school owners incur extra costs they otherwise cannot recover from attendees. I also know that their spouses will only go along so far when they need to dig into their pockets time and time again to cover >these little unforeseen expenses. So, perhaps I want to make it possible for them to avoid such dilemmas. (In reality, I am on a quest to stamp out martial art divorces in order to starve out Lawyers:) All kidding aside, I simply believe that, among other things, no person has the right to look in my fridge, no person has the right to ask me about my love life, and no person has the right to ask my about my financial affairs. You see, I am from the old school where such questions were considered poor etiquette, and I like to teach my students good manners as an important life skill. The reason why I think it is an important lesson in martial arts is because I believe it is an important part of self-defense. Poor manners can cost you your life in some places. Perhaps I am wrong in my assumption that learning good manners is a valuable asset; but, I'll continue to make it part of my lessons because it is important to me, and I need to get enjoyment out of teaching too:) One of the reasons why I fell in love with martial arts was the philosophy; however, I soon learned that the tenets so prominently lavished on us by our Oriental Master Instructors were not necessarily observed by same. Sure, there are still quite a few (well, maybe some) around who have not let their integrity be displaced by dollar signs, but I believe that the younger generations will see less and less of that. We are on a crossroad in martial arts, and many old masters will soon have gone to the big Dojang in the sky. I hope to make some believers before I join them:) Please allow me to apologize for the many typos on my last post on this issue. I guess the heat under my collar got to my brains:) I also promise to get off my soapbox, and this is my last post on this issue.
