Things like this are my very reason for despising politics and backstabbing. We'll miss you, and we look forward to next year's seminar....." Thanks for the kind words of support. Since I first mentioned the "non- aligned" approach I take with my students, and the reasons why, I still occasionally get an e-mail -- off-line-- suggesting that this may not be the best approach, and even that I may be doing my students a disservice by not connecting with an organization for them. Up until last October I suppose someone could have made a valid arguement to me -- but not any longer. Whatismore, I think just about everybody who contributes here knows that I had made quite an effort to include various folks--- yes even our friend in Florida --- so that everyone would have an opportunity to present their view. Needless to say, I could probably give a happy "G-D" if I ever hear from "Mr. Entrepeneur" and his organizations' efforts for the balance of my lifetime. Maybe he feels the same, I don't know. As far as fall-out goes, The Internationale was just one of a few activities I had to back-off from until I can get my finances back in shape. In the meantime I continue on with my teaching and my research. (BTW: Important note to you or anyone who is intersted. I was able to borrow a copy of dissertation on Korean Warrior Monks done in 1979. It has a fabulous Korean/Japanese/Chinese/English language bib. I am calling the publ in Ann Arbor later this morning to find out what it takes to get a copy for myself. I can also report a couple of articles publ in rather obscure magazines on the same subject.) I'll close this out with a bit of encouragement of my own, both to you and to a whole lot of lurkers out there. Rudy, you and JR, and Hal (Whalen),and Jere, and Ray and a whole lot of other folks DO risk something when they speak out on this Net and voice their opinions, give advice or state something not consistent with commonly held beliefs. Not everyone will get a nasty letter like Ray did, or get turned in to an employer with a groundless accusation as did I. However, speaking out does come with some risk. Personally I have come to believe that we train in MA so that we might develop the character to do or say the right thing when its time. After all you don't have to train in MA just to learn to sit by passively while things happen, do you? I hope all the folks I have mentioned (and many more) will continue to risk some in order to provide guidance to the rest. FWIW. Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 10:29:12 -0600 (CST) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Korean_Warrior_Monk_Stuff_?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Folks: I just completed the post to Rudy and thought the better of it, so here is the information on the Korean Warrior Monks if anyone is interested. The Dissertation is by Samual Dukhae Kim ("The Korean Monk-soldiers in the Imjin Wars:....) and is his PhD dissertation of 1979. It has not been published but was available from the U of Ill library in Champaign-Urbana on an interlibrary loan and catalog listed as 294.392 K56 1980. It may also be available through University Microfilms International, 300 No. Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, Mich 48106, I don't know for sure. When I find a good resource, though, I usually try to get a copy for myself. In the bib are a few articles people may want to check out. a.) Yi, Minyong, MONK SOLDIERS DURING THE IMJIN WARS, publ in BUDDHIST THOUGHT, vol 2 (Jan 1976) pp 35-42 b.) Yi, Kyehyon, THE KOREAN MONK SOLDIERS, publ in JOURNAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES (June 1962) pp 23-31 c.) Kim, Ch'angnam THE KOREAN MONK SOLDIERS, publ in JOURNAL OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES OF SEOUL UNIVERSITY, vol 12, No. 3 (June 1966) pp 46-53. There are also about 20 books listed in the bib but they are mostly historical works that would only mention the monks in passing. Now granted this material is dated, but it may provide some clues to more up-dated published material through Internet search engines and such. BTW: The dissertation is good in its way but don't expect a lot of in-depth material on the nature of monk training, lifestyles and so forth. The dissertation is simply an overview of the monks participation in a selected conflict though it does reference other historical involvements prior to the Imjin conflict. Enjoy!! Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 10:26:01 -0800 (PST) From: Kent Frazier To: Digest Dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: TKD/Hapkido Thoughts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello everyone, sorry for the belated response, I just moved to Austria and I havent had a chance to check my email until today. In any case, I felt compelled to disagree with Bruce on a few points. Bruce wrote: "Not a few instructors constantly mix in stuff from various places in order to capitalize on the latest MA trends. They rationalize it by stating that their art is ever in a state of "growth". Fine. Whatever. I have said my piece enough times about this practice on this Net that everyone can pretty much guess my view of this." What would you prefer, Bruce, that an art stay in a state of perpetual stasis? It seems foolish to say such a thing. At some point, every one of our arts did not exist. It took innovation and --gasp-- change to bring these arts into existance (pardon the sarcasm, i am tired.) People have to change things in order for those things to grow and adapt to new surroundings. Many instructors are not ading things to their art only to accomodate new trends, they are trying to make their art more effective. True, many of them fail miserably, but is the lesson here that we should never try? Of course not. Countless important accomplishments were the result of failure after failure, until someone finally got it right. It is foolish and narrow-minded to insist on stasis. That attitude will get you nowhere, quite literally. Second point of contention: "As I said before, TKD is not a Martial art. It is a martial sport, but it can be taught like a martial art. The same can be said for Shotokan Karate." I do not agree with here either. Taekwon is, at its heart, a martial art. It CAN BE TAUGHT as a martial sport, and often is, unfortunately. There are many, many dojangs out there that do not tech Taekwondo as a sport, and to say that they are simply teaching sport Taekwondo as a martial art is again foolish and narrow-minded. Martial art Taekwondo and martial sport taekwondo are separate branches of the same tree, but the trunk is not sport taekwondo. If Hapkido lent itself to a sporting environment, it would very likely suffer the same fate. So please, kindly lower your nose before it gets cold. Just so you know, I have nothing against you or most of your opinions. I just think its a bit unfair that you so freely bash Taekwondo, and yet uphold yourself as if what you practice is a pure, unblemished, unchanging, wholly Korean (certainly not formed by incorporating martial arts from other cultures, especially those god-forsaken Japanese) martial art. Oops, looks like that sarcasm crept back in again. Oh well, I guess its time to end this email, it has gotten rather long. Later guys, and no hard feelings, right Bruce? The Pan Am Games Selection Process is a part of the overall 2004 Olympic Games Selection Process. The Olympic Games Selection Process is a two-fold process that includes the following: - Qualifying the USA for Olympic Weight Categories(maximum 2 Male and 2 Female) - Qualifying the athletes for the Olympic Team A) in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, each country must qualify the weight categories in order to be able to compete at the Olympic Games. The maximum number of competitors that any country may have compete at the Olympic Games is 2 Male and 2 Female competitors. There is no guarantee that each country will have 2 Male and 2 Female competitors. This is merely the maximum number of competitors allowed per country at the Olympic Games. There will be approximately 104 Taekwondo competitors at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Calendar Year 2003 will be devoted to qualifying the Olympic Weight Categories in which the USA will be able to compete at the 2004 Olympic Games. Calendar Year 2004 will consist of selecting the athletes to compete in the weight categories that were successfully qualified in 2003. The USA will host a series of competitions in an effort to select the best athletes to compete at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. That process is outlined on the following pages. OLYMPIC TEAM SELECTION PROCESS PHASE 1: 2003 - Qualifying the Weight Class This phase of the process is to select the athlete(s) who earn the opportunity to qualify the weight classes in which the USA athletes will be allowed to compete in the 2004 Olympic Games. Step 1: (April 2003) Pan Am Games Open Qualification Tournament - Date and Site: COS, CO April 5-6 , 2003 - Open to any USTU member Black Belt competitor - All competitors are responsible for expenses for this competition - Single Elimination Competition - Top 4 competitors in each of the Pan Am Weight Categories earn a spot in the USA Competition Pool NOTE: An Ad Hoc Committee may select additional athletes to add to the USA Competition Pool following the Pan Am Qualification Tournament in March. In order to gain Wild Card consideration, those athletes added must have been a USA National Team member within the past three years. Step 2: (May 2003) USTU Senior National Championship - Date and Site: May 21 - 25, 2003 New Orleans, LA - Single Elimination Competition - Athletes must qualify by placing 1st, 2nd or one of two 3rd places in Sparring Competition at either a USTU State Championship, NCTA National Championship, Armed Forces Championship, or AAU National Championship. - Top four competitors in each of the official eight weight categories will qualify for US National Team Trials - All athletes are responsible for all expenses incurred for this competition. Step 3: (June 2003) Pan Am Games Team Trials - Date and Site: Site TBD June 14 - 15, 2003 - Round Robin Competition + Finals - Winner of the greatest number of matches will be the 2003 Pan Am Games Team Member; Athletes who finish in the order of 2nd through 4th (or 5th, in the case of a Wild Card Participant) will remain in the USA Competition Pool - All competitors are responsible for their own expenses for this competition - Winner of the Pan Am Games Team Trial will represent the USA at the 2003 Pan Am Games in Dominican Republic in August 2003. Step 4: (July 2003) USTU National Team Trials - Date and Site: July 5 - 6, 2003 Orlando, FL - Double Elimination Tournament; Additionally, the WINNER of the Losers Bracket must defeat the WINNER of the Winner's Bracket twice. The WINNER of the Winner's Bracket must only defeat the WINNER of the Loser's Bracket once - The winners in each of the official eight weight categories will comprise the 2003 USA National Team and will represent the USA at the World Championship in Germany in September, 2003. - All athletes are responsible for all expenses incurred for this competition. Step 5: (August 2003) Pan Am Games - The USA Pan Am Games Team, selected in Step 3 of this process, will compete at the Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic. - Competition Results will be discussed and considered by the USTU Ad Hoc Committee in order to make a determination of which Olympic Weight Categories should be contested by the USA. - Priority consideration will be given to weight categories in which the USA earns a Gold Medal. Step 6: (September 2003) World Championships - The 2003 USA National Team, selected in Step 4 of this process, will compete at the World Championships in Germany in September 2003. - Competition Results will be discussed and considered by the USTU Ad Hoc Committee in order to make a determination of which Olympic Weight Categories should be contested by the USA. - Priority consideration will be given to weight categories in which the USA earns a Gold Medal. Step 7: (October 2003) Olympic Weight Class Fight-Off - The USTU Ad Hoc Committee will decide and announce which two Olympic Weight Classes will be contested by the USA. - A Round Robin Competition will take place in those selected weight classes between members of the 2003 Pan Am Games Team and the 2003 USTU National Team who are in the selected weight categories. - Date and Site: Date TBD OTC, COS - The winner in the selected two weight categories male and two weight categories female will represent the USA at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Paris, France in December 2003. - All athletes are responsible for all expenses incurred for this competition. Step 8: (December 3 - 5, 2003) World Olympic Qualification Tournament - Any USA athletes who succeeds in qualifying his/her weight class will earn a berth as Finalist (Number 1 Seed) in the Final Olympic Team Trials. - If an athlete does not succeed in qualifying his/her weight class at the World Qualification Tournament he/she returns to the USA Competition Pool. Step 9: (January 2004) Pan Am Regional Fight-Off - Competitors in the USA Competition Pool will have a Fight-off in those weight categories that were not qualified at the World Qualification Tournament in December. - Winners at this Fight-off will compete at the Pan Am Regional Olympic Qualification Tournament. - Round Robin Competition in the 2 Selected Weight Categories Male and the 2 Selected Weight Categories Female. The competitor from the World Qualification Tournament will be seeded #1 at this Fight-off. The other competitors (2 thru 5) will compete in match order. - Date and Site: Early January OTC, COS Step 10: (January 2004) Pan Am Regional Olympic Qualification Tournament - A maximum of two male and two female competitors will compete in this event as a last opportunity to qualify weight classes in which the USA may field competitors at the 2004 Olympic Games. - Single Elimination Competition - Winners succeed in qualifying the Weight Category for the USA NOTE: In the event that the USA fails to qualify a weight category at either the World Qualification Tournament or at the Pan Am Regional Olympic Qualification Tournament, then the USA will not have a representative in the 2004 Olympic Games. There would be a potential to receive a Wild Card to participate in whatever weight category the WTF selects. There would be no guarantee of receiving a Wild Card, however. PHASE II: Select the Athlete Step 1: (March 2004) Open US Olympic Qualification Tournament - Single Elimination Tournament in the Olympic Weights that have been qualified either at the World Qualification Tournament or at the Pan Am Regional Qualification Tournament - Top two competitors are added to the USA Competition Pool from Phase I, Step 1 - Date and Site: TBD - Open to any USTU Black Belt member - All athletes are responsible for expenses incurred for this tournament Step 2: (March 2004) Round Robin Competition (Competition Pool Athletes only) - Winner of this Round Robin Competition plus the competitor who successfully qualified the weight category will be the finalists for that particular weight category. - Both of the finalists will go to European Open competitions to gain experience prior to their Final Fight-off. Step 3: (June 2004) Final Team Trials - 2nd Place competitor must defeat the 1st Place competitor twice - 1st Place competitor need only defeat the 2nd place competitor once - Winner represents the USA Taekwondo Team at the 2004 Olympics. ************************************************************** US Taekwondo Union One Olympic Plaza Ste 104C Colorado Springs, CO 80909 719-866-4632 --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
