Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net You may remember that I spent 9 years in self imposed exile as a independent instructor. I was so disappointed with the many organization that contacted me wanting my affiliation, I even stopped responding to their letters and phone calls. Many promised a rank increase without seeing my technique! It took a while, but I finally came to the realization that the independence may be permanent. Obviously this is no longer the case, but patients and continued networking with other hapkido instructors was a hidden blessing that lead me to my affiliation with Master West. The next year I went to Korea with Master West and Dr. Kimm and was able to see the grave of the founder of hapkido. Something that was a dream since his death in 1986. So you never know.... Jere R. A young innocent student approached and asked "What's the difference between that and Karate?" Reply: "In Aikido we don't learn to maim people." Punchline: at the time I was a 1st Dan Taekwondo person. I was steamed but I didn't do anything about it. If the student was interested enough, they would come see us anyway. However, this was long ago, and on the whole, the martial arts clubs at IU get along pretty well (Ueshiba Aikido, Tomiki Aikido, Taekwondo, Shaolin-Do Kung-fu, Jujutsu, Self-Defense, Hapkido, as well as Kendo and Shotokan Karate, although informally) and students often go to two or more clubs if they are really into it. Apparently, oriental schools (in the orient that is) are much more exclusive and get upset if you practice another style at the same time. Comments? To your original question, Kumdo vs. Gumdo. Just two different romanizations. As I understand it, "K" and "G" are oft interchanged during the romanization exercise. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hear Hear! I agree with Kent. I am new to this forum so I did not want to be disrespectful to Mr. Bruce. The way TKD is taught in my school is as whole "art". As I stated in an earlier posting, that is the reason our GM has added actual writing/reading assignments and extra components of some of the other Korean arts to round out education. He is pushing us to develop in all areas of our lives, not just the "sport" areas. However, I very much appreciate Mr. Bruce and all the other contributors to this forum.
