Alain whets the appetite nicely on the subject of Fights vs. Combat, but the article is much too short for my taste. Hey Alain, where's the rest of it? ;-) 2) A feature on "Classical Korean Swordsmanship." As that topic has been much on the list of late and it isn't my area of expertise, I'll leave it to the rest of you list denizens to dissect, scrutinize, analyze, and report back with your conclusions. 3) An ad for yet another Hapkido organization. From the flyer I saw you must pre-register on or before March 17, 2003. Also, I found the following on the ICHF website: In 1999 the Combat Hapkido System was officially recognized and accredited as a legitimate "Kwan" of HapKiDo by the WKF/KKA (Kido-Hae). The Korean name of Combat Hapkido is "Chon-Tu Kwan HapKiDo" ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Friday, February 14, 2003 2:59 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Extra! Extra! My last grading was the first time that i was assessed on free sparring and we dont do much of it in class. The thing i find hardest is the moving, hence why im asking you lot!! So if anyone has any drills i can do at home/in my own time or anything of any help it would be much appreciated! thanks for your time. sincerely Wendy. _________________________________________________________________ Worried what your kids see online? While I most certainly agree that a lot of work goes into creating a scholarly document, the amount of work often is based on the reliance of folk tales and other scholarly works that may or may not be correct......" In the vein of this discussion I can relate a very odd experience I had the other night banging through a book on Korean history, In this case it was KOREA AND EAST ASIA by Kenneth B.Lee. I mention this because for all the books I have read that soft-peddle Koreas' place in history, this was the first one that I had seen in print (publ 1997) that seems to go overboard in the other direction. I had the same experience regarding the Wa-ko when I read So's book and then later read a translation of Takgoshis' THE STORY OF THE WAKO (Publ 1940). According to Takegoshi those Wa-ko weren't pirates after all. No, they were "Japanese pioneers in the southern regions". Here all the time I thought they were freebooters and it turns out that they were nothing more than seriously misundestood entrepeneurs!! Gee, now I feel really bad!!!! ;-) I drive the librarian nuts with requests for so many books on Korean culture specifically and Oriental culture in general. However, I have learned not to draw conclusions about such a broad subject with a mere handful of resources. BTW: For those that are looking for a good starting place regarding Korean weapons and armor there is an article in the Korean Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society by a guy named Boots that is pretty good stuff. It serves as a good counter-balance to the more modern book by Seo, or the one on Chinese weapons by Yang, Ming-jwing. Its pretty much an overview but there are some sound resources cited in the bib. I often tell my students that the art is usually better than the Instructor who teaches it (or the organization that controls it). Mostly I figure because they don't want to waste their time with an old, fat guy. But there was once a Shotokan black belt who came into my instructor's dojang, must have been around 1976. He, the black belt, had fought professionally in Allen Steen's Blood n guts wars and was a tough old boy. He told me the story. "When I came in I asked the old man to spar. He said sure, and we went out on the floor. We went at it for a couple of minutes, and I went at his head with a punch combination. I clipped him on the chin, just barely. His eyes opened and he grinned, and we went at it. He came in on me ...and when I opened my eyes he was sitting in a chair, dressed in a business suit, reading the newspaper. He asked me if I would like some tea." And the black belt joined our school. Yes, I know, ya'll probably got yours last month. And what do I read.?. Some person from Portland has received just sooooo much email asking for his opinion that he feels the need to write a letter to TKD Times. Losik tells us that Aikido evolved into Hapkido. And we are forced to view more ads from that chubby grandmaster wannabe from down Florida way. His personal organization now has 'contributors' from a South American country and one on the Indian sub-continent. Poor suckers... And the chubby one even has own article. Probably an ad. At least his contributors' funds are going to a good cause... Sure... As least I saw one sensible piece from former list member John Hancock correcting TKDT on the errorenous info they previously published regarding Gm Hwang Kee (RIP). I guess I should stop reading before I find something even more outrageous. Now where did I put good ole Jose --- Jose Cuervo. Good luck to you and please let us know the outcome of your next > confrontation. > Kat Kelly Kat, I think you've hit the nail on the head with this one - those "muscling" over other schools are very poor examples of what being a Senior Belt means. I wonder how many of these immature individuals are out there? How many of them call themselves "master", when they are demonstrating to the world that they have no mastery over their own self? Junior grades will be looking up to these people, and the example they are setting is one which I find disreputable & one which I for one, would not aspire to. As a Hapkido student, I hope to be going for my Black Belt in a few weeks. In our association, the quality of the 1st degrees and above is of a very good standard, and the 1st Dan is seen by lower grades as something to *really* strive for. You see it not just in the technique of the Black belts, but also in the way they carry themselves. No one is perfect, but when they make mistakes, they can see what they have done, & and correct them. They have enough maturity & intelligence to recognise their own failngs - Not just in terms of technique - but in their lives too. While the technique becomes exemplary through this process, the humility these people develop is also inevitable - because they know the more they know, the more they realise they dont know, and how much more they have to learn. I can tell you also that as a student looking up to these people, I do respect them, and through them, I respect more & more the art we share. BUT: If I saw or heard about the kind of behaviour described in previous posts on this topic among the teachers or higher ranks in our club or association, I would leave in disgust - because they would have subverted everything I have come to value in our art & ideals. I think its obvious that "muscling" over other clubs & arts is shameful, and their is no excuse for it. Just an opinion, Mark D. http://mobile.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo!
