Anyone on the list > familiar > with the Tactical Hapkido Alliance? www.erietkd.com Hello Sharon: This alliance was formed by Master Barry Rodemaker. I have done several seminars for him over the past few years, and I enjoyed his hospitality and working with his students very much. He is an amicable fellow who used to be with John Pellegrini, and his approach to presenting HKD is pretty much the same as JPs. I guess you might say "a chip off the old block". I worked mostly with him before he decided to launch his alliance; however, because his ideals and mine no longer mix, I have recently had to rethink working with him. The clincher came when my name was used by one of his associates in conjunction with some Hall of Fame nomination I had not even heard of. This sort of thing really gets to me, because my reputation means a lot to me. Too bad, because I enjoyed working with his people, they have a lot of heart. Master Rodemaker's take on forming his alliance is that he has as much right to form an organization as did those who went before him. He cites that nearly every one of the organizations formed in recent years (since the 40s) came about in a similar manner -- students leaving their masters. From what I know of Korean martial arts, I can't deny this. In any case, consumer intelligence will work things out. If he DOES have something to contribute his org will flourish, if not it will wither to nothing as others have. What you may want to do also is make sure that you include others from different martial arts backgrounds. Foot work is simply yet complex. Know the mechanics of a good stance, but don't stay in a fixed stance, instead use what I refer to as a posture, where you're not in a fixed stance and you are more manuverable. I believe he was to have the spot that GM Yu had in his absence (1 hour on Saturday and 2 hours of Sunday) I do believe you are correct though that having him even for 3 hours was not enough to justify the investment in flying him over from Korea. Also, Bruce, if you look at TKDTimes prior to that event, GM Seo had it advertised as well that he was coming to Chicago for that date. So nobody meant to lead anybody on. The plans just fell through that is all. It is too bad you didn't make that seminar Bruce, you would have had a blast. GM Yu was an excellent substitute for GM Seo. When you want to move laterally against an opponent (as opposed to moving in or moving away), you have two choices. You can circle towards their back, or across their front. Tactically, moving towards their back is the best way to minimize what your opponent can do, while keeping your options as flexible as possible. For example, visualize yourself in a sparring stance, with left foot and shoulder angled forward. Imagine an opponent in front of you; if they move towards your right side (across your front) then you still can strike with either arm or either foot without shifting position. On the other hand, if they circle to your left (around towards your back), then you only have your leading left hand or foot to attack with (without turning or shifting). Moving in this way allows you to dictate the pace of the match and the options your opponent has. I find its most effective to move like that just as your opponent begins their strike. It can spoil their targeting, and their ability to turn towards you and maintain position is delayed, which should allow you a chance to strike as well. John W. My last grading was the first time that i was assessed on free sparring and we dont do much of it in class. The thing i find hardest is the moving, hence why im asking you lot!! So if anyone has any drills i can do at home/in my own time or anything of any help it would be much appreciated! thanks for your time. sincerely Wendy. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wrestling (freestyle and greco). In Taekwondo, Korea took the Gold, USA the Silver. USA vs. Korea TKD was one of the matches held at the session last night. The lineup was: Weight Class Team Korea (Red) Team USA (Blue) Match 1 M 128 lbs Dae-ryung Kim vs. Arnell Smith Match 2 M 150 lbs Yeon-slk Nam vs. Jason Han Match 3 M 176 lbs Seon-taek Oh vs. Steven Lopez Match 4 M +l76 lbs Dae-sung Moon vs. Tony Graf Match 5 W 108 lbs Ji-hyun Kang vs. Kay Poe Match 6 W 125 lbs Sung-bee Yun vs. Taylor Stone Match 7 W 147 lbs Su-ok Kim vs. Simona Hradil As I recall, Lopez, Poe and Stone won their matches. Can't recall the winners of the other matches off the top of my head. Stone is very young and looks to be a real up-n-comer. Just too much going on at once. Our seats were just four rows off the floor and about 12 or 15 yards from the boxing ring. Taekwondo/Judo was just to one side with wrestling on the other side. If you know wrestling then you know the name Cael Sanderson, probably the best NCAA wrestler yet (yes, probably even better than Dan Gable). He won his match. Rulon Gardner, surprise winner at the last Olympics also won his match. Not too long ago, after an accident, Gardner was told he may never walk again. Great comeback for Rulon! Also saw a US weightlifter clean & jerk 501 lbs. Great evening. Helped make up for having to read TKDT. :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Sat, 15 Feb 2003 20:18:19 -0800 (PST) From: Neal Konecky To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Footwork in forms Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Today, after class, I had a lengthy conversation with SaBum regarding footwork in TKD forms. Basically, the conversation centered around the comparative advantages and disadvantages of a straight step or "c" step in moving from one technique to the other. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this matter. Thanks. Also many of the Influences in Japan came from China indirectly via Korea. This is not to say that Japan did not also have an influence but if you check the dissertation database I believe you will find several dissertations on the subject. In the town where I started my first class, there was already a well-established school of other martial art. They were definitely not happy with us and I had to read in their newsletters and listen in the local TV program about their MA being better, more useful in fighting, having more techniques than our poor TKD. I decided not to correct any of these statements as my general rule is not to talk about styles I never trained in. Then, at one day, two young and quite high-ranked students from that school appeared in our dojang and asked if they can join the class. I said no problem and the boys happily kicked with us. But it was a sparring day in our club :) It was nothing made especially for them, nor was there a sign of some enemity from our side. They were treated just like the other members of the class taking part in the fights. But they got a terrible hammering that day... and were very surprised to learn that their counterparts have been training half the time as they. What I really respected, was the fact, that the boys came back to the next class and asked if they could join our school as white belts... Couple of weeks later we staged an open tournament. And guess what? For the first time we had the team from our local rivals. Big, strong, and ready to fight. The attitude of them was also "we`ll kick them all" but they had to face the truth - their champions lost most matches, and their highest graded student had to serve as a kickpad while sparring with our fighter... Since then, I never heard a negative comment about our school or Taekwondo in general... :) Piotr Bernat www.taekwondo.prv.pl --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
