Tried to slip that one thru, ehh... :) They have been a part of many or most styles of Hapkido for only 30 or 40 years, but not all styles. Imagine my surprise, and I was, when I saw my first demo from Gm Bong Soo Han's dojang, c1981, ... about all they showed were jump and flying kicks. Granted they are for show and I can't do them very well either, but imo one should not believe they were -never- a part of Hapkido. FWIW, I had to check Kwang Sik Myung's 1968 book on Hapkido. Someone I think you are familar with... Granted none of the kicks he shows in that early book are jumping or flying, but more than two-thirds of them are to the head! Actually that surprised me a bit... ".....For a number of years, a few folks in this region have pushed to have Korean martial artists get together to train; however, for some reason we have not enjoyed the benefit of wide support....." It was not until I attended my first Internationale in Jackson that I was able to see clearly what was missing in so many of the events I had attended for years. As I had said in a previous post, the funds available for the average practitioner to travel and practice are way too tight to travel half-way across the country for a mediocre experience. Jackson offered a venue for discussion, multiple learning experiences and a complete absence of recruitment pressures. Nobody I know wants to spend a few hundred dollars to be involved in a pre-packaged dog-&-pony show where the participants become a captive audiance for a two-day recruitment spiel. In hand with this are also those many issues I have raised before about promoters trying to make their event all things to all people, as well as the increasing wariness on the part of attendees who have been taken to the cleaners one too many times. If regional groups are going to rally support for the sort of event that is being touted in Tampa in March, then there will need to be some BIG increases in cooperation and focus with the attendee coming out as the major winner. Lets face it, there are a number of names in the KMA community who have built a reputation for marginal business practices and questionable representation of the facts. Its gonna be a long slow road back to getting the KMA practitioners to trust in the community. Is it possible? I don't know but Master West seems to be moving in the right direction.
