Name calling and all the trouble that goes with it are not worth it. In 1992 the ICHF was swamped with letters and phone callls threatening Pellegrini and even those of us who taught for him. Said Combat Hapkido would never last and that it was garbage. Well we have celebrated our 10th Anniversary, have an extensive video library, have published our first book with others on the way. We have been accepted as a legitimate Kwan by the Korea Kido Association and the World Kido Federation. The ICHF enjoys the support of GM In Sun Seo and has hundreds of chartered schools across the United States as well as around the world (England, Italy, India, Poland, and many more). Is Pellegrini the end all of Hapkido? I don't think so. But he has some very good ideas about promoting Hapkido and improving the presentation of it in curriculum and organization. Is he the Anti-Christ? definatly not. I have found that he is either loved or hated, very few seem to actually find themselves in the middle ground. While those who downgrade his abilities often do so, there are few that seem to attack my skills (which I learned mostly from Pellegrini) when I work out with them. It is only after I finally reveal my association with the ICHF that they act indignate about my instructor and how he got his rank. They ask how can I support him. It is easy he supports me. He cares about me, my students, and my family. He askes how my wife is doing, askes about my ex and her children. He truly cares. But enough for now. Love him - Hate him. It doesn't matter the ICHF is not going anywhere. The funny thing is that there are many ICHF members that go to other seminars and support Hapkido in their area but there are few that return the favor. Unfortuanatly I can no longer afford to travel as I once did and have to limit my Seminar expereinces to those where I can drive and get back to Lincoln, NE by 9:50 PM for roll call at the State Penitentiary. Otherwise I would be all over the place still. I hope that eventually I'll meet many of you in MS or some other event such as when I met some of you in Chicago in 2001 for GM Seo seminar. Can you recall the date? The reason being is that his website claims that he is 8th Dan Hapkido under the Korean Ki-Do Hae. It would just be interesting to know in general terms how long it took him to get from 1st to 8th Dan, and compare that with the typical timeframe it took most of his "contemporaries" to reach similar rank. Now, to be completely honest, I'm not one of these guys who goes around spouting off about "minimum times within ranks" and some such temporal constraints on promotion, BUT (and she's a big ole but) time spent within ranks is a good general indicator of that person's knowledge and skill. Granted, there are the occasional savants that take to certain activities like a duck takes to water, and "minimum times" only serve to produce a 2nd Dan that makes most of the 5th Dans look like cobblers in comparison (but they are the exception, and not the rule). Now having said all of that, I can produce a tickle number based on gut feel and experience that would seem reasonable (to me) for a person to reach the position of 8th Dan within a martial art. Of course, that is ASSUMING that the higher ranks are reserved for those that represent the apex of that art in terms of physical performance (age and health limitations considered), technical knowledge, understanding of any philosophical issues relevant to the art, grasp of the art's history, knowledge of the art's lineage, and (most importantly) the ability to pass all of that baggage on to the next custodian(s). So (drum roll please), I'm throwing 30 years out there as a reasonable minimum...that's my number. Now, if Mike was at Chester Holubecki's Isshin Ryu school somewhere around 1973 when John Pelligrini got his 1st Dan (as I forcefully thrust my tongue into my cheek), well then, I got no more questions. Seems reasonable to me...case closed...court adjourned. Now if Mike comes back and says this was 1989 or something...weeeelllllll, that tends to raise a red flag for me. I'll wait for Mike's date before I say anything else. Bottom line, I'm thinking 30 to 35 years to make it to 8th Dan, unless they are a genetic combination of Bo Jackson and Albert Einstein. At that point, I just bow down and say, "It's yo world, dog...I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut". Otherwise, 10 to 15 years in Hapkido does not an 8th Dan make (to quote the Mighty Thor). That's the way I see it. Opinions vary. Although, it's funny how everyone seems to be of the opinion that opinions vary. Anyway! Disclaimer: I do not have it in for John Pelligrini. If all the Hapkidoists of the world beat a path to his door, it would not affect my paycheck by one red cent. Just my attempt to add some rational skepticism to a subject that has been fueled by too much emotion. Now that chubby guy in Florida...THATS A DIFFERENT STORY!!!!!!!! I was just wondering if there is > anything special you do for yourself to keep debilitation at bay. > Hello Bruce: Very little is private about my life, and I have no problems discussing any of it. My back injury happened while I worked at Sears as a furniture repairman lifting a heavy object. When my partner dropped his end of the thing, I (feeling indestructible), tried to save it from crashing to the floor. Bad decision. At that time, in Canada, the prevailing method of dealing with a back problem was bed rest. This was the absolute worst remedy, but being on workers comp, there was no choice but follow the Dr's advice. After spending nearly two years in and out of the workers comp hospital, I finally had some surgeries that somewhat eased the drop foot syndrome. Enough about what happened, and on to your question. I have only one remedy that I stick to these days, and that is to keep moving regardless of the pain. Not to do that seizes me up, and it actually feels worse. I also take some of the usual painkillers by the handful, and I recently found out that I paid a heavy price for that -- severe ringing in the ear. After recently visiting an ENT specialist, I could not believe that there is ample documentation that long term use of painkillers cause this problem. BTW, there is not a single warning on the container of the item. In all, I think the back problem has gotten a bit better with age, but I still have some serious bouts to deal with on a regular basis. I did notice that Winter time makes things worse, and I attribute that to coughing, sneezing, and snow shoveling. Since I can't do anything about the weather, I just learned to live with it. I think my martial art training has helped me cope with the situation. So, there is little real good advice here; however, I'd like to pass on a stern warning to listen to your body when it tells you something, Not doing so can cause you a lifetime of pain, loss of income, a divorce (that normally follows loss of income), and the host of other nasty things that you had not bargained for. One of the worst problems is that fear of this incredible pain often keeps you from exercising the very parts that need work. This has a round robin effect of gaining weight, and that in turn is worse for the back -- and so on. After many years of dealing with the ailment, I have found that one uses the arms more to get up from chairs etc. This makes the legs weaker, and with the added problems of drop foot and sciatica, it makes for a very unstable situation. Again, I credit martial art training for somewhat compensating for that problem. The bottom line is to use preventive measures to strengthen the abs and lower back muscles, although this does not mean it will prevent all problems. I was in terrific shape when it happened to me. The only problem I had was a stupid notion that I was indestructible. Sorry I could not be more optimistic Bruce:( Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 12 Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 11:06:46 -0800 (PST) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] From Another Group....free demo and BBQ Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello Everyone, I saw this in the paper and thought you might like to know that Hapkido Grandmaster Bong Soo Han is giving a free demo and BBQ at his school in Santa Monica California.
