The only kick I could do good at the time was dollyo chagi, it appears that was true with my competition. No sparring gear. We banged shin's. That is all we did. We did not have a clue as to what we were doing. I would wait. Jere R. Was it around the time he was with GM Parks's World Traditional Hapkido Federation or was it after he started the American Hapkido Association? Thanks. If you really are beginner, most folks in the beginner ranks are just like you. It is a good opportunity for you to check out your training and the quality of the instruction you are getting. You can feel real good competing against classmates and then discover that your training is lacking is some aspect. Competing inside your own dojang is somewhat incestuous. We usually go the KRANE (Karate Referees Association of New England). These are rated according to size from B to AAAAA. http://www.krane.org/ Miguel http://garciatkd.com [if you can't beat your computer at chess. try kickboxing] --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Dana Vaillancourt" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 01:54:20 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Peeing in your own well Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have a timely question. Do you think it somewhat immature, inappropriate, and disrespectful to question your own senior and instructor’s integrity regarding their granting dan rank to others? It seems childish to me that students of the same instructor would assume one has a greater right to dan rank than the other (sounds more like red belts!). Is it not the Senior Instructor’s perspective that is relevant here and not that of what appears to be a jealous or bitter student? If one feels their instructor is being arbitrary and or lacking in integrity dealing with one individual, could not the same be inferred of their rank as well? Don’t these complaints just undermine everyone’s integrity? For instance, people regularly question several well-known Grandmasters who have granted dan rank to others. Have you walked a mile in those shoes (or no shoes) or seen the same cross-section of students they have? Besides, if you don’t like peoples’ rank - - blame the instructor who gave them the rank, don’t blame the students. I guess one should just a long hard look at why one objects so much to what others are getting and doing. Best. I've never posted here, so I hope it works! :) A little background on me...I started TKD about 15 months ago. I'm now a blue belt. I was 45 when I started. I'm a lady, too! I wasn't an athlete. In fact, I haven't done much sports-wise since high school and even then I wasn't too interested in sports. I began competing in tournaments from the very beginning, as a white belt. We have competitions just about every month around here during the winter months. We are a WTF school, so we wear lots of protective gear when we spar. I think you could break into it with just forms competition. You don't need to spar if you're uncomfortable with the idea. Of course, competition isn't required at all, but it does help you develop your confidence. Just remember, everyone is nervous and self conscious at first. The confident ones just have more tournaments under their belts! You will be just as confident after some experience. I don't spar every time. At my age I find I'm usually sparring against girls half my age and that's a challenge! But I have brought home a few trophies. (Not first place!) I mainly spar to get over my fear of being kicked and my reluctance to kick back, which is good practice if you ever had to use these skills in a real life situation. Good luck, Kim! You can do it! (If you want to!)
