Timmerman, Thank you very much for your adivce. After taking a couple of steps back, I see your point about the financial aspects. It doesn't deter me from wanting to attempt this, but it does help me take it slower than what I would have thought. :) You also brought up another good point and that is status of the promoter. I am in no way close to the rankings or experience of those I would invite and this may cause a problem. I have already seen such a thing happening in the past. As for egos, well I would hope that those who there to teach would be humble enough as instructors not to let that happen. I am still willing to pitch in and make something happen in this area. I will just slow down from the excitement so not to bite off more than I can chew. Mst. Sims, I agree that we can have two directions in which to take this. Re-inventing the wheel would be the hardest of them, but would give us more "freedom" if you will, to make it a venue of a common vision per se. However, building off of something that is already happening (example GM West's gatherings) would be a little bit easier to do. So which way would you rather take it? In my post I suggested that one could make a choice between having a central location at regular times of the year or rotate the location through a selection of cities at selected times of the year. In the former case, the Internationale is a good example, where in the latter case the standard personality seminars such a those by GM Ji or others come to mind. Do you have thoughts on the advantages or disadvantages of either of these venues? In that same post I commented on the (in)advisability of perhaps being too ambitious in organizing the venue. Do you have thoughts on how wide a range of arts you would want to represent and how many presenters would be nominal to start with? Finally, and perhaps just as a service to others would you (and maybe even JR) like to speak to the nature of your organization regarding membership? I know you mentioned a bit of the history in your last post but I think its hard for some folks to imagine an event that could be SPONSORED by an organization without necessarily pressing for membership IN that organization, yes? Perhaps it would be a service, if in counter-point both you and JR would take some time to talk about what membership in your respective organizations is all about. I am guessing, and speaking as one who is unaffiliated with either organization, that people might have a clearer idea of where the events start and the influence of the organization begins. Hoping this makes sense.... "Yep, and thats exactly my point. Such an effort IS a viable activity, and I am only advocating that we either expand the effort started in Jackson to the Upper Midwest, or, model its approach farther North..." OK, so if we wanted to use the USKMAF twice yearly seminars as a model for another event I think it would be helpful to find out how Master West *started* his very successful gathering, eh? It's fine to say you'd like to model the current seminar format, but wouldn't it be more prudent to model the format of the gathering as it was in it's early stages? Can Master West's gathering be sucessfully duplicated wihtout first going through the steps he had to go through to get it this far? Can it be done like he does it without his particluar resources? Beats me. Master West, would you be able to share what you went through to get the gathering to it's present stage? I bet it's an interesting story. :) Greg G --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "J.R. I came up with the idea of having three different classes running all the time after teaching many seminars for others where the stuff being offered was of little interest to a large portion of those present. I added the one-hour classes and strict time schedule after hearing complaints at other places that the "significant others" had NO idea of when the seminar would break, end or even start. As an instructor, it is almost impossible to leave for lunch on time, and just a few "half hour for lunch" seminars made me decide to do the two hour break that we always use now, giving everyone the time to find a place, eat comfortably and even shower off if they have the notion. I remember the first time that I broke (figuratively) 100 participants, and I can tell you for sure, getting this seminar in gear is one major EXPENSIVE undertaking, and if it was not for folks like Wayne Watkins, I would have NEVER done this many, and I shudder every time about the expenses I incur prior to receiving my first completed registration form. Now we have around 250 - 300 participants, but it's taken many years and participation in many poorly run seminars to get where we are now, and I will do my best to continue to put on the best get-together I can and keep it as affordable as possible. As far as the instructors are concerned, only USKMAF members and brother organization heads (GM Timmerman & M. Booth both work with me on a regular basis) are invited to instruct, and even then, only after I have seen them on the mat and am comfortable with their teaching style. If I have some goober teaching a session, no-one will remember his name, but everyone will remember it was at MY seminar.....J. R. I have been with Grandmaster Timmerman for a bit over three years now and the training, correcting and friendships just continue to get more and more intense. Some individuals even think that I am to formal when addressing individuals with the DD. I disagree. There are several so called "Masters" and "Grandmasters" out there (and some who read the DD) who I would not EVER address as Master or Grandmaster. I have been around the M.A. world long enough to know, see and smell a RAT when there is one. I only hope many, many others promote Grandmaster Timmerman, Grandmaster J.R. Maybe you can pull this > off. I > will make myself available for any assisstance you might need. Hello Ian. Thanks for clearing up the possible idea that I did not wish to help you. The way I read your post, someone might have gotten the idea that I reneged on a promise to appear, and my reputation means a lot to me. Mind you, my best intentions have been thwarted by the weather. This was the case with GM Seo seminar in Chicago where the roads were closed to all traffic. Alas, that is not uncommon in our area. To Bruce, Jeremy, and other interested parties: My aim is to work toward establishing a yearly event that will give those who are unable to travel to Jackson a chance to work together. This event should NOT interfere with existing events, because that would be counter productive. My hope is to have more chances of working out with good people, and that won't happen if we replace one event with another. Careful planning will be required. As I see it, we will have to start small so no one will lose his or her shirt. That means we need a modest workout area that is very accessible by air and road travel (6-8 hours driving). This is near impossible to find in larger cities, because just a hall rental for a weekend could set the promoter back thousands. In fact, it will be hard to find period, and that is why I have not yet made more solid plans. If I can't do it, I have no problem supporting someone who can do it. Case in point is that I actively support JR, and I urge all NKMAA members (and anyone else) to attend his events. I do this for one simple reason. I like my members to have good instruction. I do NOT support others for the same reason. In closing, I would strongly suggest that this boat has one captain who has earned enough goodwill to make it possible in the first place. I am positive that JRs event would fall apart in a heartbeat if he did not steer his boat. As has been said a number of times by a variety of people -- strong willed leaders often have problems working together unless they know from day one who is in charge. My fear is that, if we set up a collective, we might create more problems than it is worth. This is not about who is top dog. I have just been around long enough to know that a boat with too many captains never seems to go anywhere but in circles. I am a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do-Ji Do Kwan style. I am testing for my 2nd degree soon and as part of my testing requirements I have to write a paper on how martial arts strengthens and betters the community. The main focus of my paper will be two fold: 1)How practicing martial arts makes one a better person and therefore that person can benefit the community by just being better. But I wanted to give specific examples of how practitioners with disabilities have overcome obstacles. 2)Many Do-Jangs, schools & martial arts studios sponsor charity fund raisers (ours does a "break-a-thon" every year for the MDA. I am looking for other examples of this from other Do-Jangs across the country. If any of you have any specific examples like this that I could quote you in my paper, I would be greatfull if you would email them to me @ MONYMan51@hotmail.com Thank you! _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail --__--__-- Message: 12 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 16:33:40 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] more us open results Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net women light 1 Nia Nicole Abdallah USA 2 Lin Liu China 3 Yelena Pisarenko USA 3 Darcy Kimmich USA women heavy 1 Rui Hong Ren China 2 Laurence Rase Belgium 3 Heidi Gilbert USA 3 Maria De Jesus Mata Mexico men light 1 Tommy Mollet Netherlands 2 Jesper Roesen Denmark 3 Jason Neville USA 3 Louis Torres, Jr USA men heavy 1 Ferry Greevink Netherlands 2 Victor Estrada Garibay Mexico 3 Nicolai Laustsen Denmark 3 Ken Hulter Norway --__--__-- Message: 13 From: "Patrick L" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 16:37:42 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Invitation to a seminar Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear TG Dewey, regarding your post . . . >From: tg dewey I am going to attend one of GM Pellegrini's seminars and I would also like to attend one of Mr. Cushing's and if there is anyone else on the list that has a HKD Organization, please let me know as I would like to attend their seminars as well before I decide to align myself to an Organization.< You are cordially invited to the Jang Mu Won Seminar to be held later this year in California.
