Your mental activity is physical. Your body and it's processes are physical. In the end...it's ALL physical. Your "spirituality" will be small comfort against the objective reality of the transference of kinetic energy from the gang banger's brass knuckled fist as he repeatedly smashes your face from the mounted position. Why is this so hard to get?>>> Don't knock the spiritual aspects too much as some of the world's greastest martial artists became that way because of it. The philosophy of most martial arts is to better oneself (in all ways) and to avoid violence; this philosophy should not be confused with the potentially violent techniques that are taught. While some might consider it ironic to learn violent techniques as a means to self-perfection, one who has power tends to also develop responsibility and sensibility along with it. In today's uncertain world it is also prudent to be prepared to die at any time. Spiritual training helps one to be prepared for violent encounters without the unnecessary baggage of being afraid to die. A couple days ago here in Hawaii a undercover police officer was shot and killed as he and 2-3 others were trying to take a 28 year old doped up suspect to the ground. Sad case. In Judo we also have the same philosophy. It is quite true, it is MUCH harder NOT to actually do the throw (should you get it just right) than to actually perform the throw. This kind of control only comes to a skilled martial-artist. Anybody can pound somebody through the floor if they are average. But it is often NOT the other way around.
