Perhaps others will read these and add a few of their own. 1.) The website will need an English version of the organization including the name, picture, office and responsibilities of the people who run it. Wouldn't hurt to have a little bio on each person either. 2.) The website should have a curriculum for both Guep and Dahn ranks standardized and accepted by all member schools. 3.) The website should identify a liaison that individuals can contact with questions. I personally don't advocate a representative here in the States but if you do it would need to be regional rather than national. 4.) It probably wouldn't hurt to have a membership listing including those ranks bestowed by the organization. 5.) It certainly would help to have a listing of all KHF sanctioned events, as well as an officially designated announcement section so as to avoid individuals invoking the organization so as to suggest approval from it when none was actually given. I hope this is of some help. Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Laurie S." Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray- Well, we definitely do our kicking the same. I agree with just about everying you said. My instructor used to call the 45 degree kick the "Combat Roundhouse". Use it a lot, even in our 1 and 3 step techniques. Also by chambering the knee high in our style of Hapkido (and straight up) we could use front, side, round, tournback side and inverted front kicks from an "in-close" position, usually 1-2 feet. This would be a "style" of kicking that separated us from our kicking counterparts in TKD. We also were trained to move in a lot with kickers so anybody who brought their kick out wide (TSD, Japanese Karate etc.) could be more easily entered on and/or jammed. I train with a friend who owns his own school and who studies Enshin Karate, a similar style to Kyokushinkai Karate except sweeps and throwing are allowed. They are murderous leg kickers and train their legs to take it as well. He's also big into Muy Thai training. They do the instep version of leg kicking because the odds of you hitting some target between the knee to the hip is likely. If you use the "ball of foot" method your focus and distance have to be "precise". Of course, believing that this is part of training, the few times I used this method (which is far more powerful) it devestates their legs (even the trained ones). Therefore, I only use the instep method when training with them. But from a practical view, I would practice the traditional roundhouse kicking method when doing leg kicks. It's ultimately far more devestating.....just train with caution! Hi James, In my experience, the term for salute, salutation, and bow is "kyongnye" as in: "Sabom Nim kay kyongnye." Not too sure what the "kay" indicates, though. For a salute to a flag, we say "Kuk-gi bay ray" but that "bay ray" romanization hasn't been of much help to me in finding the exact translation. Yet, "salute the flags" is what we do at that command. I hope this helps- Denise --__--__-- Message: 16 From: "Denise Lee" To: Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2003 22:51:16 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Round Kick Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Charles- I'm not that great with word descriptions, but I'll give it a shot. We were taught to bring the kicking leg up to the side at the same time the supporting foot is turned 90 degrees to the side. (although it's almost like bringing the knee up straight and simultaneously changing its orientation with the hip rollover as the supporting foot is turned) The knee is pointed at the target and one's center is contracted. The leg is at a 45 degree angle. When kicking, the leg is extended as the knee is pushed towards the target as the hip is extended and the foot travels around to the target. At the same time, the supporting foot is turned another 90 degrees so that the supporting heel is now aimed at the target. The retraction is considered as important as the extension, so the leg is returned in large part by re-centering. It may seem awkward and/or slow as described, but I know a wholelotta people who are lightning fast with this kick -- and it's wicked powerful when that's the intent. The only injuries I've known people to experience with this kick are caused by using momentum (tendinitis around the hips) and possibly hyperextending the knee from not tensing at the point of full extension. I've never known of any ankle injuries. The weapon can be either the instep, the ball of the foot, or the steel toe of them big old 'struction boots:) I hope this helps in your quest for the best round kick for your Moja Kwan system. It was an honor to share some training with and from you last weekend. Thank you!
