U.S. Says No More 'Tripwire' (Ray Terry) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" To: Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 15:21:21 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] terminology, etc... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have read the comments of using Korean terminology in class with some interest. I must admit that I find it very entertaining to see teachers use Korean terminology in class incorrectly. But I persist in teaching my students both the English and Korean names of a technique. The reasons are numerous, but my favorite is when we are doing a demo and I just have to name the technique I want them to do in Korean and the audience has no clue as to what I am saying. Master West is my 4th teacher and the only one who is not a Korean national. So my students must suffer through my Korean just as I had to suffer through years of their English. They also pay for those years of translating my teachers English into words and sentences that visitors could understand. I have been fortunate enough in the past to have students who were Korean nationals and we have always taught classes at the dojang in the language and the culture of Korea. We still do that once a year. I have a student who just returned from living in Korea (he was in Jackson with us) who teaches the grammar part of our program (our Hangul class is free and open to the public). If my students develop an appreciation for another culture they have learned something and widened their vision and opened their mind a little. Is this not our job as teachers? I write the names of the students in Korean on the belts of the children and they learn something new and I learn how to work with double constants and multiple syllables. One thing I would like to point out that has not been mentioned concerning this subject - is that Koreans have dialects just as we do. But I have noticed that almost every hapkido teacher I know, whether or not they use the Korean language in class, can write and read Hangul. Even Bruce.:) Just my opinion.... Jere R. Hilland www.hapkidoselfdefense.com PS. Still have not seen a copy of the DD group photo from Jackson. There were about 3 dozen flashes, so someone has to have the pictures developed by now! give me a few more weeks, but I hope to have streaming video of the masters demo in Jackson on our website. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 12:33:24 -0800 (PST) From: "Dr. Daryl Covington" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: bar fight Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net What the law supposedly says and what actually happens in court are often two different things. As for the first strike, etc., the law does differ from state to state. Unfortunately, money hungry lawyers don't. Here in our state a high school student's family was sued for 150,000 dollars because their kid threw a punch to another kid during a football game, with full pads on. Guess what, that family is 150,000 poorer now, and the laywer about 45,000.00 to the good. Sad world we live in isn't it. Again, I was not trying to stir an argument. I only wanted to state taht sometimes its best to eat the ego and just leave. daryl --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am disturbed by the pattern of fear over the issue of confronting aggressors. We have to be fearful of the law, of injuring our attackers? Why? I am sure these should be considered if you plan to instigate something, but in the defense of yourself or others. Why? Sure Ken could have left the bar. What if there is some jerk at the restaurant or at Ken's work or on the street. Run Ken, run. Give Ken a break. What's he supposed to do stay in bed and lock all his doors. Oops that didn't work someone just broke in, don't hurt him Ken he's just having a bad day and he's down on his luck! Oops he just stabbed ken to death. Well at least Ken won't have to worry about losing the court case. What's the deal people. My wife, bless her heart was held up by gunpoint in shopping center after she entered her vehicle. The guy stuck a gun in the window and grabbed her purse and she wouldn't let go. The strap broke and all of the good stuff fell out onto the floor of the vehicle. The robber got away with some perfume (hope it was his brand). My wife is not trained in anything and at 5'5" 110lbs not very foreboding (but very tenacious). I thank god the A hole did not shoot. Her actions "may have been" reckless but I am proud of her and her "Fighting Spirit". Did I mention my 13 year old daughter was in the car too. What if she was a sheep? What else would the bad man with the gun do? Isn't there supposed to be a "Fighting Spirit" inside a true martial artist? Do what's right when it's right, whatever it takes. When it's time to go to court, fight that battle to the best of your abilities. When it's time to serve Jury duty serve well and don't crucify good people, even ones with bad lawyers. If Ken did not stand up to this guy he may have found someone else to pick on that night. Maybe someone less capable than Ken. Maybe that person could have been accidentally killed. Maybe Ken saved a life that night. If we make it easy for people having a bad day (life) to take it out on others they will. This is not a specific knock on Daryl or anyone else. In general a lot of people are rationalizing the run or do nothing approach. No war in Iraq. Leave poor Saddam alone. Are we spineless or just in a daze? Freedom is not Free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It seems to depend greatly on what you get used to. Personally, I always found the shrine in Aikido dojos and having to prostrate oneself to it before and after class very strange. << Indeed, but at least sitting on one's knees is an exercise... More seriously, my point was that the flag is on the wall for Republic of Korea nation-building reasons rather than respect for the flag (or nation). If the purpose, in the US, is to have the Korean flag as indicating the origin of the art and the US flag as representing the host country then, in an Aikido dojo in Korea there should be a Japanese flag. >> > Personally, I have always found it odd to be required to put my hand on my > heart and bow to a piece of painted cloth.... Even the Union Jack? << Most particularly the Union Jack - didn't you get news reports in the US of terrorist activities in Northern Ireland? - a Union we definitely are not! The official, who requested anonymity, told Korean correspondents that the expression applied to the situation 10-30 years ago, and that Americans wanted such expressions done away with. The official said that if a war broke out here in this age of missiles, North Korea would target American air bases from the beginning. The official also said that Washington wanted to relocate the Yongsan base in central Seoul as soon as possible, maybe within months, and that the two big bases north of the Han River should be relocated south of the river within years. Osan and Pyeongtaek were mentioned as possible relocation areas. He stressed that the American defense treaty was stronger than ever but that if the Koreans wished, U.S. troops in Korea could leave tomorrow. Washington wants a new blueprint for the next 50 years of U.S.-Korea relations to be made before October, when the alliance turns 50, he said. Washington wants talks on how to make the relationship more balanced, as President Roh Moo-hyun has requested, but wants Seoul to take on added roles and responsibilities, the official said. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
