I talked a bit with Ray about it in Jackson. I can't believe someone would do that. And then you wonder about all the stuff about character he talks of......" Thanks for the kind thoughts. Ray has had his little run-in as well. As far as I know there is nothing to be done, but the KMA community is actually rather small and such behavior is not something that can go for long without producing a response of some sort. Time will tell. He certainly seemed a hopeful source of more information but I haven't seen anything new since his name first appeared......." I may be on thin ice here but I think Jang In Mok passed away and his tradition is now carried forward by GM Lim Hyun-Soo. There is a teacher of this tradition up in New Hamphire. "....I'll agree with you about the Suahm Dosa (Suh Am Dosa?) story (where is > the evidence?) but GM Seo's background in gongfu (Praying Mantis, > probably) is easy to believe. There are a lot of Chinese stylists in > the ROK and they got there after the 1949 Chinese Revolution. I can > tell some influence from baguazhang as well (there's some great books > out by GM Pak on baguazhang now)......" There is a website that has a few Praying Mantis' lineages and mentions a few individuals who carried the art to Korea--- and from there to the US. I have run a few of these but never though to actually look for the name of GM Seos' reported teacher in any of them. Let me see what I can did up. Also-- thanks for the alternate spelling for GM Kims' name. More to come. Did you read the recent translation of the MYTBTJ? The reviewers I read didn't like it, but I thought that at least he got it done and that in itself was useful. I know I learned a lot from reading it......" Its a fabulous book and I believe should be mandatory reading for all serious KMA practitioners. All the same I am waiting for the translation that dellaPia is supposed to have coming out. I downloaded an exerpt from his work from the Internet regarding the practice of the BON KUK GUEM BUP hyung and he seems to err on the side of producing something which may not be as "artistic" but is certainly more "user-friendly" in helping to actually understand what the various drills are trying to report. Try searching GOOGLE with either his name and/or "Bon Kuk" and you will probably come up with the same site. So many books; so little time. Do you have a source for this? See it in a particular school or art? Or better yet in a book? I would appreciate any additional info on this you could come up with...." Due to some recent unpleasantness in my life I have yet to retrieve some of my materials left at my former workplace. The book I cited is there along with John Sells' excellent work "UNANTE" which is a VERY well regarded survey history of the Okinawan Te Arts and they development into Karate. I printed this volume and highlighted your post so that as soon as I pick things up I will make sure to pass along the title and author of the book I was mentioning. I know that that sets of forms were introduced and adopted by K.T.A. on Jan. 30, 1967; i know, also that an important person in this work were Gran Master Hae Man Park of Chung Do Kwan. But I need more complete information...about the team of korean master responsible for carryng out this project... Thanks a lot and greetings from Naples, Italy !!!!!!! Yep, and so do we. The Yon Mu Kwan forms were organized by GM Myung and reportedly ok'd by GM Choi Yong Sul. We have five MTHand hyung and there is also one for the dan bong. There is no hyung for the soh bong that I know of and none for the cane (though I am intrigued by a rumor that the Chinese have had a cane form for some time). For the sword I use hyung that I was taught in Kumdo, and the staff hyung will come from the MYTBTJ. Out of curiousity, though, I would like to hear/see more of the forms that you do and about their development. What say you? Last year the USTU hosted a new developmental training camp just for athletes at the State Level and we will be hosting the camps again this year. The first Camp will be held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, April 17-21, 2003. The athletes must arrive on April 17, 2003 and depart on April 21, 2003. USTU National Team Director, Coach Han Won Lee, will facilitate all training sessions and will be assisted by his coaching staff and various National Team Members. USTU State Associations may make recommendations based on the following criteria: 1. The athlete must be a USTU Member for 2003 2. The athlete must be 12 years old or above 3. A Red Belt or above 4. The State Association may recommend one male and one female athlete from each state 5. Each selected athlete must be contacted by the State Association and have their participation confirmed prior to submission of their names to the USTU 6. All athlete recommendations must be received by April 7, 2003. The USTU will provide the athletes with rooms and meals at the Olympic Training Center during their stay in Colorado Springs. The athletes will be responsible for their own roundtrip airfare. As space is limited to 25 spaces for this training event at the Olympic Training Center, athlete slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please fax your recommendations and include the athlete’s address & phone number to: (719) 866-4642 or email the information to USTUGOLD@mailsnare.net. As you will remember, the USTU fielded an incredible team to this event in February. April 5th & 6th - the USTU will be holding the first 2003 Pan American Open Qualification Tournament. This event will be open to any USTU registered black belts. This will be a single elimination tournament. As all 4 winners will go on to the next step in the process, we will not be holding semi's or finals on those dates. 2. The USTU Ad Hoc Committee may assign wildcards to any USTU athlete who did not qualify at this event, but has been a US team member within the last 3 years. 3. The Jun 15th Finals will either be in Las Vegas or at the US Olympic Training Center with all 4 semi-finalists from the April event, plus the wildcards competing for the team position. Since this is a Round Robin tournament, (re: all competitors fight every competitor and the one with the most wins takes the team spot), there will be no seeding at this event. 4. The winners will represent the USA at the 2003 Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic If you have any questions, please contact the USTU National Events office.
