Thats really to bad. Part of being a holder of a black belt is maturity. Thats why the poom belt was created, as a 8 year old does not have the maturity level to hold a black belt. When I was that age and if I had earned a black belt I would have been showboating, showing off, picking fights with bullies, trying to impress the girls, etc. everything being a black belt steers away from. When I received my 3rd black belt I (40) was standing in line with many 8 year olds getting their 1st degree. I felt very much like I was in kindergarten assembly, very uncomfortable, like Kramer on Seinfeld, in the kiddie karate class. When you put in the hard work and years of training and maturing, you were proud to get the coveted black belt, now when they hand them out to children. "Wow, you have a black belt, so does my 6 year old". I steer away from letting my peers know of my dan ranking, its almost embarrassing. Since every new black belt opens up a school, the market is flooded so the instructors cater to the paying parents by offering black belts to children if they will sign a contract (the McDojang), what ever it takes to get the all mighty $$$. I miss the old days. This organization was formed by several WTF 9th dans in an effort to provide a viable alternative to the WTF (USTU). Beyond that the Int'l Chosondo Fed. Is it still around? Good stuff. One of my buddies (used to help teach our kid's t'aekwondo program) is Mitsutoshi Yatsunami, who is a 3rd dan in Sabaki style. He teaches in Yashiro, Hyogo, just west of Kyoto. In a case of serendipity, I discovered where he was again when I went over to test for 2nd dan in iaido last year. He was at the same college (Hyogo Teacher's College) as was my iaido instructor and also a wonderful judo historian! I had a blast! Just before my iaido test, Mitsutoshi shows up in karate gi and Nakamura-sensei (my iaido instructor) tells me that he would like to see Mitsutoshi and I do karate kata. I looked at Mitsutoshi and said, "do you do kata?" He says, "no." So we just went out and did some controlled sparring (and me in full hakama!). In the middle of it, I was reminded that it was Mitsutoshi who taught me my front kick (reminded by strong and fast kick to my gut!). He also holds a 3rd dan in Kyokushinkai. Luckily, I know a lot more about elbow strikes and when I got in close I did much better. Off at the side, Nakamura-sensei says, "that's not kata, that's just fighting! Ok, stop! Mitsutoshi wins! Now test." Like I said, it was a blast! Did I mention my instructor had me climb a mountain (a little one) that morning? Simms for that information. The last couple of days I have been doing some extensive research on the Jidokwan and their connection to Shudokan. Thus far I can deteremine that Byung In Yoon was the Shudokan influence in the Jidokwan. Lee, Kyung-suk was the Judo influence and then there was Chang, Sung-sup who was first appointed head master of the Kwon-bup division of the school. Does anyone have any information on GM Chang, Sung-sup's background? I would be interested in knowing more information on that. Plus, prior to the formation of the KTA, did Jidokwan people learn the Shuri-te forms or something else? It is ironic that I end up in the Jidokwan system. When I first started my training back in 1980, I was in GM Trias's Shuri-ryu Karate. It looks like my training has come full circle in a way. :) Jeremy __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! At our school Juniors earn a Jr. Black Belt and they must test for 1st dan when they finish the Adult material and have turned 13. The amount of material differs for Juniors then for Adults. I think this makes it very fair for all the students. All 1st dans then possess the same material. I would guess some of the instructors passing out those 1st dan's to 6 or 8 year olds would rather not be, but their hands are tied. You get your certificate if you pass that day, and on it is the signature of every black belt in attendance that has a vote on the board. My 2nd dan has like 15 signatures. if i loose that, tough cookies, I don't get another till 3rd dan. Come to think of it....maybe I should go make a copy. Are the only folks who compete in this event individuals who train in a specific style of Karate? Are there opportunities for grappling or submission holds or is the competition limited pretty much to striking and kicking? Does this event proceed from the former Kyokushin style of competition or did it develop on its own? Inquiring minds would like to know.
