Having read the above I thought is this guy for real, so not being familiar with the individual in question (hailing from the somewhat saner side ;-) of the pond ) I went on line and found a web site "Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association, International Chapter" On this beautifully presented website was an invitation to join this organisation and I noted the following extract (signed by GM Richard Hackworth) "A high level black belt is not as important as the character of the instructor. Members must be of high moral character. They must also be genuinely honest, kind and a person of integrity." Highly commendable, and I just can not believe that the person who scribed the above, could also be responsible for issuing a somewhat bullish competitive fight challenge, there must be some misunderstanding here. I would be remiss if I didn't complete some background. As a 3rd Dan in WTSDA I was the conductor for Diana's exam and can attest she was indeed the "best of the test" youth or adult, male or female. She is indeed a talented young lady, but also extremely respectful and mature beyond her years. She is the kind of student we dream about training to Master and I'm sure some day she will follow in Master Coker's steps and make her and Master Hicks proud as one of the youngest Masters in the WTSDA. As an aside, can you imagine how proud Master Hicks must be having been involved in Master Coker's training to Master level, and soon be able to see one of his students train someone to Master Level? Anyway to further the background, I too use weight (not gender) appropriate boards, and I am very selective in what breaking techniques I allow my younger (developing bone structure) and 45+ students (bones become more brittle) do. Now my younger students do all the falling and rolling that will allow them to do the joint locking hapkido-like hoshinsul that we do in our school, but they tend to stay in the "release techniques" versus joint manipulation and pressure point application. My youth students also have the same requirements regarding ability to lead bow in (6th gup), warm-ups (4th Gup) and class (2nd gup), so anyone I promote to 1st Dan would be capable of teaching a class. You are correct; they would be "missing" the joint manipulation/pressure point (and bladed weapons) information until they are at least 12 years old. When I was a co-owner of a WTSDA school, they had a questionnaire about the whole Jr. Black belt issue. I was one of the folks that felt like a Jr. BB should not be issued, and it would discredit the hard work someone had put in. I also felt like their rule (if under 10 must have 4+ years training) was a good compromise. Lastly I'm similar to Master Hodder in that I am now 6 and up (5 year olds may train if a family member is already a student), and it takes 4 years minimum to get a black belt from me, so effectively my youngest black belt would be 10. I guess it would be possible for one of my 5 year olds to stay with me 4 years, and be as talented AND mature as Diana, in which case I would of course promote them to black belt level. Now here's the rub. Because of the very wise IMHO omission of joint locks and pressure point information from my 5-8 year olds, and reduced information for 8-12 year olds, I must admit that my 10 year old 1st gups will not have all the information a 16 year old 1st gup has; so in effect I have two curricula, and to be fair I should implement at least a 1st poom, and possibly a 2nd poom for the youngest entries. If I were still teaching the WTSDA curriculum, I would find it easy to award the full black belt, and just let it take as long as it takes to reach an adept level with the standardized requirements....... FWIW Michael Jett at age 6 was (and currently still is) the youngest person I every promoted to green belt. He was the most talented youth Cho Dan Bo I had ever trained at 9.5, but due to his birthday and having about 3 years and 9 months training, he waited another six months to be the youngest person (at age 10) I have ever promoted to black belt. So yes children like Diana and Michael do exist, and should be recognized, but they are indeed the exception IMHO. I teach kids beginning at 6 years old. They learn the same basic cirriculum as the adults do in my program. And the bottom line is I hold them to the same standard on the basic cirriculum as I do for adults. The one thing I do is that past the first few gups, I hold them long enough at each gup level for them to develop proper techniques. One thing I personally can't stand is seeing a bunch of kids wearing black or high gup colors that can't execute a proper stance or hyung. What this means is that it takes 5 to 6 years or more for my kids to get their black belt. That's how I do it. My org does not have Jr Black Belts. But I will say that I have had high ranking Masters come and find me at open tournaments just to tell me they are impressed with my kids, both in the quality of technique and their attitude. Now, from a philosophical standpoint, are my young students as mature as my older students. Overall probably not, although I have some kids that are much more mature than some of my adults. The biggest difference in my kids is that I do not go into a lot of pressure point, weapon and freestyle self defense. Once they move to the adult class, they catch up very quickly. Now, the fact that it takes 5 to 6 years, and I don't accept students younger than 6 means that my youngest black belts would be 11 to 12 years old. In fact, the youngest has been 12. My daughter will test for her e dan at this fall while she is 16. Our org requires special approval for 17 and under to test for higher dans. How does that jibe with some of the other kids programs I have seen out there. My Kids don't play games or just play. They work hard, and it shows. They also get very upset when they see their friends and schoolmates from other schools showing off or claiming high rank when they don't have the techniques and knowledge. Just like I do. Remember, for an instructor, your students, and especially your kids, are a mirror of your skills, abilities, and most important your attitude and philosophy. Jerry's daughter, Ms. Diana Nowaczyk is one of those truely exceptional students. Not mine, but I have had the chance to watch her grow up in Tang Soo Do from the time she was an orange belt. I can say without a doubt that she deserves her rank, and is second in no way to any black belt, no matter what their age. I had the priveledge of sitting on Diana's sam dan test panel, where she was by far the most gifted person testing regardless of age. Had the decision been not to allow her to test, there is no doubt in my mind that she would have waited. And at 16, she was a better instructor than a lot of instructors I know. Now, there are a lot of adult color belts who would not want to study under a 15 or 16 year old. But I don't think you would have had any questions whatsoever from anyone in her Master's Dojang. I believe that list members should know that all black belts are not created equal....." I wanted to write and say how sincerely embarrassed I am for you. I can only imagine that receiving such an e-mail from Hackworth must have been quite an injury to the position and work you how done over many years to establish yourself in the KMA community. Of course, I am sure you know that such a challenge is not unlike the sort that most teachers receive in the course of their careers. In such cases, the challenger has everything to gain and really nothing to lose. You, on the other hand, have considerable to lose and really nothing to gain. I speak from experience in this matter as I had entertained taking a "personal interest" in making Hackworth suffer for the injury to my family and myself. I had been counseled strongly against such measures but was feeling very much "righteously justified". What actually changed my mind was not the good counsel of my wife and friends, though. No, I actually had occasion to read some of Hackworths' writing in John Gradens' publication for professional martial artists. I think that I had assumed that Hackworth was perhaps hiding his intellectual gifts under a basket, as such. I don't pretend to be a literary critic, but if his writing is any indication of his intellectual ability, IMHO you could be abusing someone who is not particularly bright. Of course, this might go a long way towards explaining what seems to many to be a string of poor choices and poorer decisions but then I would be just guessing. I could understand, now, however, why it is so important for such a person to elevate himself into the company of folks such as yourself, Master West and a host of Korean masters that are imported from Korea to lend authenticity to his ventures. Of course, I would not pretend to advise you in this matter. For myself, though, Hackworth, is not worth another moments' consideration by myself or anyone I know. The best revenge I can imagine on such a person is to work harder to do the one thing he seems incapable of doing---- to make the KMA better, independent of fame, or a profit motive. I have always assumed that it was the American 15 years old, and recent discussions with my Grandmaster and the process of upgrading a Kukkiwon Poom certificate to Dan certificate have convinced me that it is the western method of counting age. FYI - My understanding of Korean culture is that they consider a child to be 1 year old at birth. Thus, what a westerner would consider a child's first birthday, a Korean would consider their second birthday. I believe this is the traditional Korean method of keeping track of age, which is probably changing to be more in line with international standards. Anybody have a better understanding of this issue? Those are separate titles. It is interesting to see a organization require a chodan candidate to teach. How young are the teachers and how much experience do that have when they start teaching? BTW, In our dojang, women, men and children ALL have the SAME test for 1st dan and 1st poom and one does not EVER have to teach as a yudanja (BB) below the rank of 4th dan. The only difference you will see is the width of the belt. Non-instructors have a standard with belt and instructors have a slightly wider one depending on their rank. Jere R.
