One would think that a large organization such as the KHF would rather associate themselves with class act as opposed to what they seem to be associated with. I would enjoy getting into a mental sparring match with Hackworth but there is no honour in sparring with an unarmed man. Mindy, my oldest, was far and away better than the adults she tested with (but she was also testing for a higher dan rank, so it was expected she would). I only had the other adults break with 1 board multiple times (1 did break a brick), but Mindy broke 2 at a time - same size boards as the adults. I also had her spar a 17 yr. old, who didn't let up on her at all. The younger students, 11 & 12 yr olds, did break slightly smaller boards, but not by much. So although I use poom ranks for those under 16, there are some exceptions who can do everything any adult can. That's why I allow her to wear either belt (she has a poom belt and navy blue & black belts). Most of the time she wears a poom belt, but she and all my dans line up as equals to their adult counterparts. The only real difference in my dans is their age, which coralates to experience and maturity. I'm sure with only a few more years even my youngest dans (pooms) will be able to carry themselves as any of my adults. I would say that I expect the same level from everybody, which is only half true - I take each student as an individual. Everybody developes at their own rate. Saturday I tested for my blue belt and during the sparring I became very dizzy, confused, and sick. I continued to spar until it was over but ended up fainting at the door. I am assuming it was because my food intake was not sufficient. Before any rank test I always try to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurt, juice, and lots of water. I felt very weak until I came home and drank lots of water, sports drinks, and a rich meal. Any suggestions for proper nutrition before a hard work out? I'm not sure if there really is a HapKiDo poom belt anywhere else or not, and truthfully, I don't care. I use 3 levels of the poom belt with a year separating 1st and 2nd, and 2 years between 2nd and 3rd. When a poom belt holder reaches 15 yrs. and 6 mos. of age, I have 6 months to make one of four choices with regard to that students' rank. #1, the student is devoted to his art, attends class regularly and is physically proficient enough to wear an adult rank, then I simply hand him his black belt with "job well done". #2 The student is fairly devoted, attends class, but not as regularly as #1, and/or lacks very little in their proficiency due to lack of practise, then this one will re-test for adult black belt prior to their 16th birthday. #3 This guy is not very devoted, attends class infrequently, and would probably be unable to pass an adult dan test within the allowed time. He wears a red belt again until such time as he meets all the requirements for adult dan testing. And #4, Puberty has hit this kid real hard and we haven't seen him/her in a while (other than those meetings we all hate when we see an ex student at the mall etc., and the last word out of their mouth is "I'm coming back to class next week"). Their rank will not transfer to the adult class, and their certificate has an expiration date of their 16th birthday. This system has worked very well for a long period of time and I would never think of changing it. By the way, if a 3rd poom reaches his 16th birthday under category #1, I promote him directly to 2nd dan. I have a very abbreviated curriculum for my squid's class, as we are after all, HapKido folks, but by the time I get someone to transfer to my adult class, I STILL have at least 3 and a half years to get them to where they need to be by age 16........J. We shall go right away. Not that GM Rudy needs rescuing, but that was Patton's response when he heard General McAuliffe's defiant reply to the German's demand that the 101st Airborne surrender when they were holding Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. While not rescuing, I will add right away that I too have received a similar e-mail from the same individual about a year ago. And I know of a number of other incidents involving the same individual. I find it hard to believe that someone with the rank he claims, the education he claims, and the tenants and creeds on his websites would act the way he does and say the things he says. Eamonn, you are correct, his website says one thing, his e-mails and actions say completely different things. I have other e-mails he has written on the same thread, calling me and others I know and respect names, etc. I try to ignore it, and try to live up to the higher standards we martial artists should live up to. But as Billy Jack said, sometimes.... Rudy is a friend and someone I respect as a good man and martial artist. I dislike seeing him treated in such a way. It reminds me of the word Abecedarian which means arranged in alphabetical order and also "devoid of sophistication." I guess both meanings are appropriate, the later in his e-mail to Rudy, and the former definition in my response. Rudy, Don't let apogenous, bovaristic, coprolalial, dasypygal, excerebrose, facinorous, gnathonic, hircine, ithyphallic, jumentous, kyphotic, labrose, mepitic, napiform, oligophrenial, papuliferous, quisquilian, rebarbative, saponaceous, thersitical, unguinous, ventripotent, wlatsome, xylocephalous, yirning, zoophytes get to you. I am sure the following will get some of my seniors upset at me even more so that they are now, but, as those of you who know me will know that I make it a habit of sticking my foot in my mouth. So with that being said.... Let us first and foremost quit attacking this man's weight. Yes he obese. However, I do know some overweight martial artists who move quite well. So this should not be a factor in the equation. What does this say to the lower belts or other black belts that read these emails and are overweight. Are we sending a message that if you are fat your martial arts suck? As instructors we are doing ourselves and students a diservice by being that petty. Let's quit using that as a source of ridicule on the man. What is in question is this man's martial arts ability, or lack thereof. I have no doubt that this man hasn't been on the mat or in a real altercation in years, if at all. Now he wants to send an email to GM Timmerman challenging him to a "public" fight. This was not a bold move on his part, this was a clever move on his part. GM Timmerman is a class act all the way and would never stoop down to make a challenge a public exhibition. So now Mr. Hackworth can boast, that we are either a) scared of him or b) just a lot of talk and no action. He also knows that if you went down to his dojang in person, unannounced, he could have you arrested for tresspassing. If you touch him, then you will be arrested for assult. Again he wins. Mr. Hackworth, I know you or one of your little lacky's are reading this so I my question is this, if you are really serious about taking on GM Timmerman, then take the fight to him. No publicity, no 3-ring circus act, just a straight up man to man contest of martial arts. GM Timmerman has already told you that he would meet you in the street. Why don't you save yourself the extra bruises and just visit his school. At least you will have a nice soft mat to fall on when GM Timmerman tosses you on your ass (and believe, he will). If you feel you must reply to me personally as I have heard you like to threaten people after they call you a name or claim that you are a fraud, then please feel free to contact me at martialscience@hotmail.com. GM Timmerman, this isn't the golden days of martial arts as much as it is the golden days of the lawsuit. Mr. Hackworth has a slight upperhand right now with this public challenge. I would also be sure that this did come from Mr. Hackworth himself. There are many people who would like to see him get his ass kicked. I may have missed it, but if you haven't already, I would recommend calling and verifying that he sent you the email. I write this with the utmost respect to you and hope you know that.
