No. From my understanding, you never have the "right" to use deadly force. What you do have is an ability to defend yourself in court on the basis of self-defense (ie. that you thought your life was in peril and you therefore used deadly force). Self-defense is a DEFENSE in court. In order to use it, you have to have already admitted that you did the crime. Planning on an admission in court is not a great idea, to my mind. Watch Mas Ayoob's training tapes for Police Self-defense. He's got it right. If you are looking for gradations in force, then I think that is a good idea, and one that is NOT really taught in most schools. Try the same self-defense drill a couple of times, using the following models: 1. A knife-wielding psychopath is attacking you. 2. A psychopath is attacking you bare-handed. 3. A mugger holds a gun on you and wants your money. 4. A mugger holds a gun on you and says he's going to put a cap in your [insert racial epithet here] a**. 5. Your manic-depressive mom didn't take her lithium and is beating on you. 6. Your older brother is pounding on you (again). 7. Your drunk uncle is trying to show you how good he used to be when he was a professional boxer. The Haedong Video is fairly good with three complete hyung, basics, drills as well as some impressive cutting demonstrations. It is kind of half a a documentary, half a training video. The Taekkyon video set is also not bad, but it is not very easy to learn from. The follow along segments are just a repeat of the "show-me" segement. One would think they would slow it down for people to follow. Still they are fairly good resources on a rarer art. I am interested in some of the Hanho videos but have not acted on it yet. Turtle press videos seem to be better than most that are out there. You sure know how to prime me up for a Saturday seminar by filling me up with cold Guinness and hot pizza friday night. It sort of made up for the fact I was quite moist Friday night. Hope everyone's legs survived the workout with no ill effects. I know alot about the after effects of being GM Timmerman's partner for techniques. It helps to think of it not as a painful techniques but rather a deep-body Korean joint-massage. Then apply the afore-mentioned Guinness or suitable substitute. :) Looking forward to working with the Minnesota crew again despite the lack of cold weather I was anticipating. Thanks for you post. You didn't mention it, but your post reminded me of a question I have been rolling around in my head for a while. We have periodically had questions about the HwaRangDo people, and I know that technically the HwaRangDo assn post dates the Kuk Sool Won. But I am curious as to wheather anyone has had experience with the HwaRangDo assns that sprung FROM GM Lees' organization. PUUULLLL-ease I am NOT interested in going into the whole political mess one more time. I am more interested to know how satisfied folks who train with these newer groups are with the training, instruction, organization, etc. I'd like to hear from anyone who has thoughts on the matter. I have this tape and it IS an interesting tape. I think it was a good over- view of that particular sword style, but not necessarily a presentation one might "learn" from. I mean I suppose you could learn whatever hyung are demonstrated simply by repeatedly replaying the tape, but it is not a comprehensive presentation of the art as such. Its a good overview with selected aspects of the art presented. There has got to be a better way. The amount of harrassment and physical abuse that many children have to deal with in school is simply not tolorated in "real life". I knew kids that went to a different high school than I did that were beaten up on a daily basis for there lunch money. And they just had to take it......" When the Columbine Tragedy occurred there was a considerable hew&Cry that went up about bullying in the schools. I remember watching a program (Oprah?) and one of the guests was a young, White, male teacher whose position was and remained through the program to be that such "teasing" was a rite-of-passage for school and was essentially harmless. I will add that such an attitude was prevalent for years--- and all the way back to when I was in school in the 50-s and 60-s---- and I have the scars to prove it. I would also suggest that such an attitude is akin to the "grin&bear-it" attitude for spouses in abusive relationships that can still be found, and the continued failure of orders-of-protection to be adequately enforced. There seems to be SOME part of our culture that simply will not let go of the practice of organizing society into tough, strong dominate individuals on one hand and wimpy, cowardly pussies on the other. I DO find it interesting that the ones who do all the categorizing and labeling, however come from the former group and not the latter. I was a bit conflicted over your post. On the one hand I think you did Jeremy a service by giving him information about the Japanese sword source. Lets face it, those swords are the most widely and readily available. On the other hand I was a little sad that we aren't doing more to encourage folks to buy Korean in the sense that there are probably a few sources of quality blades in that country if we just do our research. Without encouraging folks to purchase from Korea I believe we run the risk of allowing such industry to disappear. Certainly we must be able to find a few more sources for Jeremy to check out without having to settle for Japanese architecture and construction in his sword. Hello Master DeWitt: I was very happy to see the enthusiasm of the students (and Master) at the Brainerd seminar. It is a joy to teach such an enthusiastic group, and it is no doubt the result of your willingness to get on the mat yourself and "experience" the seminar content first hand:) Sincerely, Rudy Master Trudeau: Thanks for your kindness! The leg sled might be overkill though - all you need is a squat rack. Reminds me of my favourite poem. Came across it in college, unattributed at the time, but I've since seen Dale Clark and Steve (Maddog) Madden credited: Down the road, in a gym far away A young man was heard to say, "No matter what I do, my legs won't grow!" He tried leg extensions, leg curls, leg presses too. Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do! >From the corner of the gym where the big guys train, Through a cloud of chalk and in the midst of pain, Where the big iron rides high, and threaten lives, Where the noise is made with big fourty-fives, A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees, A very big man with legs like trees, Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack, Chalking his hands and monstrous back, Said, "Boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten! Trouble with you is you ain't been squattin'!" Also, no one has ever convinced me that a speed bag does anything but make you better at hitting a speed bag.
