It's more your state of mind than your age. Plus they don't make young folks like they used to when President Kennedy was pushing physical education. Now the young folks (generally speaking) are in poor shape but can whip your a** in a video game. After a little bit of Hapkido practice, if you happen to break something, you'll just get up laughing and say,"that the best you can do!" Black belt competition is especially stiff, and if anyone thinks they can knock some of our guys off thier stools, be my guest! In all seriousness, like I said, I hope some of you guys can make it in. I know alot of you are far away, but for you southern states folks, Natchitoches is really nice this time of year, and YES, I would love to buy the first round Saturday night. Please let me know if you are considering attending so I can line you up with directions and hotel suggestions if you need them. Hello Craig: Love your sign off's:) The Korean fan is part of the traditional weapons training in Kong Shin Bup as well as Kuk Sool. Both of these arts (as well as some others) are related and have a Chinese influence that is often attributed to the shifting of borders in that region. The fan was used as a day to day tool to make life more pleasant and, like other "tools", they were sometimes used as weapons. The feathers on the fringe of the fan sometimes concealed razor blade edges, and when the fan is snapped open these blades would no doubt be able to cause some serious discomfort. Strikes and blocks can be made with the butt end and the entire fan when closed. In addition, the butt end is sometimes used to pinch or trap. Training with the fan (in my school) includes, but is not limited to, hyung (sorry no tape at this time), and a series of techniques that include blocking, striking, covering/hiding (behind the open fan), trapping, and breaking. In the Tae Kwon Do Times article (on Bu Chae Sool) my late friend Jane Hallender wrote, I demonstrate various techniques as well as a suspended break. Unfortunately, the backgound used in the breaking picture was white and, since the board was nearly the same color, it is difficult to see the broken pieces of the board unless you look close. Having been on the receiving end of some of these techniques, I can guarantee that they hurt as much as any; however, one must be quite accomplished with the tool in order to be effective. Being as big/tall as I am, I look silly using the fan, but I could care less about that if it means to preserve that portion of the art I was entrusted with. The women in my school look far better using the tool (come to think of it, they look better than I do in any case:), and I am sure they also feel much more comfortable with it. When doing a cover shot for Tae Kwon Do Times, it is imperative that you use an article that has not been used for a while. Not many guys my size would consider being caught on a cover shot with a set of fans, hence, I used the fan:) In modern society, the fan, the sword, and many other martial art tools, are not as useful as they once were... at least in our culture. At my school we simply continue to use the Bu Chae because it forms part of the art, and we don't wish to lose the historical aspect of its use. It also points to the fake KHF website registered out of Ocoee, Florida.
