Boyd" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Further Sword Information Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dakin and others asked about more resources for ordering swords in Korea. There are a lot of junk swords (SLO's in Sword Forum lingo) available on Korea's myriad home shopping sites. These of course pop up first in any search. In my own studies I don't have to deal with this as I can just walk into the dojang, flip through the catalogs and grunt over things with my Instructor. Most of the real sword companies do not actually have websites. Lately, some of the sites which do exist have gone offline. Here are some links which are a good representation of things in Korea and are from companies with which I have experience: Daehan Do Gum (www.dogeom.com) This is a large company. So far as I know they make all of their blades but since the import restrictions were lifted from Japanese goods, who can say? I like the blade I have from them and a lot of HDGD people I know have their products. It was a very popular company when I started but there has been a lot of new competition over the past few years. The pictures on Mr. Koskella's website are from 4 or 5 year old catalogs produced by Daehan Do Gum and the discount prices listed are generally higher than the standard prices in Korea. The "list price" is much higher than I have ever been quoted for the blades in question. I presume these are "export prices". I am not certain that Mr. Koskella has the relationship with the WHDGDF that he mentioned, but it is certainly possible that he has a relationship with this sword company. The quote of a seven month lead time is quite fanciful as even the smallest companies can get you your blade within one or two months - custom. The idea of registration is accurate. The process is a pain in the neck but the only criterion are passing a general physical exam and not having a criminal record in the Republic of Korea. As much as people love to mystify things which happen in Korea it's pretty much business as usual. Your rank, style, morals, ability, teacher, etc are unimportant in the sword vending business. Hyunmoo Do Gum A company I really like and would definitely buy from is Hyunmoo Do Gum but their site has been down for months. Just in case it is: (www.hyunmoo.net). This company only sells hand-forged pieces. The prices are higher but the quality and artistry is worth it. Sinra Do Gum This company was quite popular for a time but accessing their website seems to be impossible at this time, as well. I won't include it because of what happens when you try to follow it. A site for information of a historical nature is: http://chunghondang.com/weapon_dogum.htm ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 07:27:35 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_A_promotional_campaign?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Mac, Kat et al: "...I received one too. Did everyone else as well?? I was wondering if it was a mass mailing, as it didn't appear personalized at all. I've received two different "nominations" receintly, both appeared to be mass mailings and impersonal, so I wondered if they were just picking up our e-mail address from forums such as this. But since Bruce is famous, that can't be the case......." So this begins to sound like a recent "invitation" from a high-ranking US senator who is organizing an advisory committee for small businessmen. If any of you have gotten THIS e-mail you will know that there is an expected contribution that goes along with it. In return I get a signed pic of the current White House resident. Lucky me. Gonna have to pass on the Hall of Fame deal, though. Since there is no mention of erecting an 8 ft statue of me in front of the state capital I am left to assume there will likewise be no daily memorial, lifetime stipend, or grand assembly address at the United Nations. Not to worry, folks. For as little as 2 or 300 dollars you can get a "Bruce Sims Daily Worship Kit". Details to follow. :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Further Sword Information To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 07:18:21 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > ... The quote of a seven month > lead time is quite fanciful as even the smallest companies can get you > your blade within one or two months - custom. Tangent... However keep in mind that a 6 to 12+ month lead time for a custom knife or sword is not at all uncommon. At least with the better knife makers in the US. They are small shops turning out an excellent product and the order backlog can be significant. I have waited 6 to 9 months more than once for a custom knife. In reflection not sure I would now as once you get it (after paying all that $$) you don't really want to carry and use it on a daily basis. In most cases their value appreciates over time assuming they are not sharpened or used. I'd rather get a knife that I can use as necessary, so I tend to go with production grade blades these days. I think it's pretty funny that he's also fronting a PhD (just like "You know who"), but fails to mention any details surrounding this impressive accomplishment on his website. Yes, he does relate the fact that he received his Master of Arts in massage therapy from Grand Valley University way back in 1976, but completely fails to mention the institution from which he received his Doctorate, much less the discipline. If that weren't enough, he's claiming a 7th degree black belt in KICKBOXING?!?!?!? That's like saying I've got a Bachelor of Science in billiards. I've gotten this martial arts thing wrong all along. It's not about objective reality. It's all about managing perception through promotional gimmicks, and (most importantly) the black hearted determination to lie through one's teeth. I haven't posted here in quite a while...my schedule has kept my very busy... I was reading the posts on the swords...Mr. Burdick is correct that the 440 Stainless is more brittle than a 303 Stainless or Hardened Steel...Hardened Steel of course being preferred by those...as Mr. Burdick states...who want to do some serious cutting...I have had the opportunity to handle both...and there are some advantages and disadvantages to both...it will come down to what you...the user...want out of the sword...so I offer my humble opinions for those interested...and as always...feel free to contradict any information I offer... Weight of the metal is not an issue...sword balance in the user's hand is the primary factor... Stainless Steel swords are inherently resistant to corrosion, but they will corrode over extended periods of time if proper care is not taken and the blade kept polished...The 400 series is harder but more brittle than the 300 series which offers a bit more flexibility with forces perpendicular to the length of the blade, but both types can be broken with excessive perpendicular forces...so don't use it like a pry-bar...both hold a sharp edge very well...Either can usually be purchased at very reasonable if not inexpensive prices...but check the quality thoroughly... Hardened Steels are prone to corrosion...even with a black oxide coating or equivalent anti-corrosive coating...the blade requires constant care, cleaning, and oiling to prevent the rapid onset of corrosion...the coatings are only temporary and will wear off after use...The Hardened steel blades are for more durable and provide better cutting power than the Stainless Steels...Hardened Steel swords are usually much more expensive than the Stainless Steel swords...the custom blades are usually very expensive by comparison but well worth the cost if you want a well balanced, long lasting, serious cutting sword made for your hand... To Answer Mr. Whalen's questions (To my Knowledge) about Straight vs Curved Blades: Straight Blades...such as the Korean or "Ninja" style swords are used to perform an initial smashing of the bones and flesh...cutting is then achieved by "Pulling" the blade across the flesh...this is also true after a piercing thrust...the blade is then twisted and pulled at an angle to the entry in order to lay open the flesh... Curved Blades...such as the Japanese style Samurai and the Middle Eastern Semitars...are design to cut as the blade strikes the target...pulling the blade is not required as the arc of the blade automatically performs a cutting action following the curvature of the blade...this results in action for cutting as opposed to two actions required for the straight blade...the same is true for a piercing thrust...the curvature of the blade automatically cuts and lays open the flesh as the blade penetrates... Hope any of this helps... Pil Seung! The One and Only "Tink" Kim G.
