I too have been blessed by my association with Bruce. I got TWO invites to the Hall of Fame gig (I'm so special!). If you want to buy an award for the wall, the Halls of Fame are good for sales. By the way, I've attended a couple of similar Hall of Fame inductions (each by different organizations). The great and near great show up for the exposure and are sometimes fun to watch or play with. I met our funny Australian hapkido buddy at one of those (but Gary Alexander was the most fun at that one -- imagine a 60 year old guy doing high kicks in black gi and combat boots!). I think it was at that one that I also saw one of the worst demos ever. Two 16 year old kids and two 12 year olds put on a "chinese vs. japanese" style show. In a quest to see which style was best, the two 12 year olds fought to the death, with the winner being killed by the loser's master, and then the other 16 year old finally killing the other, with a declaration like, "Your kung-fu was good, but not good enough." The kid playing the Japanese "master" even had his hakama on backwards! I was sitting with the founder of one of the Christian martial arts associations, and he just about walked out right then and there. If anyone goes to this thing, share the experience with us, would you? I would like to make an appropriate gift to my instructor, a mid-sixties yo Korean-American. (I'm pretty sure he doesn't read the DD.) Are there traditional gifts for this occasion? Or does anyone have a suggestion? <> Master Foley, Since you are my senior, I offer my advice, just from a perspective of an instructor. For me it would be really cool to see what the "fruits of my efforts had spawned." Maybe a nice bound essay of all the things you had accomplished as his blackbelt, opened your own club/school, trained x# of blackbelts, national or regional awards or recognitions. I know the more humble amoung us would view this as bragging, but your instructor would be proud to hear about all your accomplishments. Other ideas might be an engraved plaque or ceremonial knife or sword, but most Master Instructors have a wall full and several boxes of engraved plaques :-) You might consider hosting a blackbelt reunion of his/her blackbelts from your training era (nice sit down white table cloth diner). You cold go with a silver item for 25 years, but in reference to things like lapel pins, most organizations use bronze for Gup/kyu, silver for Dans and Gold for Masters. Even though we on the list are more aware than most, it doesn't hurt to be reminded of risk factors. Also, these tests would be good to pass along to less aware friends/relatives. Some of it's members that we all know I would say absolutly believe and follow the code and live by them. But one member in particular I'm not sure has ever even read them, namely the grandmaster wantabe down in FL that's listed as the US Representative... I'll let y'all guess who I'm thining about.
