I hadn't seen these before but it sure seems like a great foundation for future growth. I would probably make them a bit more behavior-oriented rather than quite so intellectual, but that probably comes down to personal values, yes? I know some schools like my sword school and many TKD schools really push the ideals of their arts by requiring students to memorize and interpret the codes of their school or style. Maybe this wouldn't be a bad testing requirement, ne? Hello Dennis: Here are some snips of a similar blurb you might find enlightening. Please note that the essay was shortened somewhat; however, with a minimum of effort, the entire essay can be found on the net. > Setting standards world wide > In a perfect world, all military or martial art practitioners would be > reasonable and prudent persons. As reasonable and prudent persons, > these practitioners would understand, merely upon simple reflection > that both home and headquarters of the traditional Korean military > arts is not in California, Texas, or Louisiana, or even in the United > States. It is not in Canada. It is not in Europe. Reasonable and prudent????? > The traditional Korean martial arts have both home and headquarters on > a peninsula off the coast of mainland Asia. It is a land that we > English-speaking people call Korea. This peninsula was artificially > divided - by foreigners - after World War II. This artificial division > was made against the desire of the people of that land; a division > which separated families and loved ones, and which remains imposed > upon the Korean people today. Last I heard, it was the North who invaded the South killing their loved ones. Glad to have this new revelation, it makes me feel much better to know that the nukes the North now reportedly has must have been made in the pursuit of more love and happiness. > The military arts in the southern portion of this peninsula are well > organized under a democratic government, the Republic of Korea (ROK). > While the standard-setting organization for the military sports, i.e. > Judo, Kukki Taekwondo, shooting, etc., is the ROK Olympic Committee, > the standard-setting body for the traditional Korean military arts is > the Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association (KMAIA). IMHO, there is more backstabbing, bad mouthing, and deceit in Korean martial arts than I have seen anywhere else in my more than fifty some years of martial art practice. Often, this backstabbing etc. is done by Koreans themselves. Look at the recent ITF problems as just one example. > Unlike in the West, being an instructor in the military arts is a > profession in Korea. Becoming qualified as an instructor is long and > difficult process. The current requirements, for example, include a > requirement for a minimum of two years of college education, and will > increase to a college degree within the coming decade. It would be interesting to see just how many native Korean Instructors actually have more College education than their "non-professional" Western counterparts:) Perhaps the esteemed "researchers" of the DD can find out more on this. > Going back to the concept of a "perfect world", for a moment. Unfortunately, here in the "real world", persons posting > information and opinion on the internet do not even need to provide > their own name, never mind actually possessing knowledge regarding the > matter for which they provide their opinion; opinion often > masquerading as fact. Looking at this statement, we should be able to expect valid support for these statements. I wonder why they were not offered as proof in this document, not even a mention of the origin of these claims. Our "non professional" Dakin (Ph.D.) would be thrilled to see that he no longer has to provide such trivial things whenever he writes his posts. > One should not be surprised therefore, to learn that the KMAIA is > periodically the object of vicious attacks by self-styled "experts" in > internet "chat rooms" and "bulletin boards". I thought this is something we "non-professionals" were defending against. Sorry to have misunderstood this, I'll go see about my mental health at once. > One recent posting provided "information just in" for readers of one > bulletin board. But then, why let silly > things such as truth and fact interfere with a good run of libel. It is nice to know that our Western reps are obviously more in the know than the Koreans whom they reportedly represent. (Long list of orgs and comments on these orgs omitted to shorten the length of the post) > The training of instructors is dealt with elsewhere in this series of > essays, but remember one point if you are a potential student of the > traditional Korean military arts looking for a place to study: if your > potential instructor is not a currently certified instructor and > member of the KMAIA, he or she is very unlikely to be properly > qualified to teach in Korea. If he or she is not qualified to teach in > Korea - for one of the organizations listed above - how can they be a > legitimate instructor of the traditional Korean military arts? Nearly all of the "non-professional" Instructors I know hold a minimum of a Bachelors Degree or higher (did I read that having a College Degree is soon to be implemented in Korea); and, for some reason, I don't think any of our students will lose even one night sleep over the horrible revelation that we are not qualified to teach in a place where the loved ones next door are building more Nukes to love them with:) Note, I did not post the name of the author, because it is not my intent to start another round of name calling. I just provided it to share with you what is being offered in the name of "scholastic" essays on the net. It is soooooo much better than the so called smut the DD offers, and it is obviously NOT a vicious attack on the credibility of the Western Instructors who are not members of KMAIA:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 11:49:49 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Korea Roundtable at Yale (fwd) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Forwarded message: Hi all, if you are in the neighborhood, please drop by: Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Yale Center for International and Area Studies and Council on East Asian Studies presents A Panel Discussion "Korea: What Next?"
