Looking for my teacher/fellow students (Greyfox) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 12:50:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Richards To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] New school Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> Well I have decided to take the plunge again in opening up my own school next year. At the moment I am doing some research to right up a business plan. That way I will be prepared for the lovely bankers to just generously give me a nice loan. :) Somethings I need to know is what is the monthly income of you schools (tuition vs. supply sales), what is your percentage rate of adults in your class and kids in your class, what is an average monthly enrollment (1 person, 2 people, etc..), advertising costs, which advertising venue, outside of word of mouth and walk-ins, seems to work the best? Thanks. If you don't want to post this information on the board, please feel free to contact me at martialscience@hotmail.com. If you have a website that would have some of this general information, please feel free to share it. Thanks in advance for the help. <> Dear Jeremy T. First, good luck in your new venture. I'll try to answer your specific questions. 1. By design I'm 98% Tuition and 2% merchandise 2. I am now 27% adult and 73% youth (National average is more like 20/80) 3. My enrollment is $79/month for 2day/wk and $10 less for each additional household member ($69, $59 and so on). 4. My advertising is fixed at $40/month. I have a small YP ad and maintain a lead generating focoused website. I do not pay (generally) for advertising on an insertion basis. We have all the plans in place for a business referal system (learned from Stephen Oliver). 5. What works best for us is our location. You can't leave the suburb or Holly Springs in route to work in Atlanta Metro area without passing by my dojang. 90% of our callers saw our sign on the way home. Now my questions in an attempt to be helpful. 1. Is this your first school? 2. Can you start smaller if you don't borrow money? 3. Are you trying to go full time immediately? 4. What are your earning goals and long range goals for the school? 5. Have you considered private sources of venture capital in lieu of a bank? (they make better silent partners, but banks are more directive). If this is your first school, I would strongly encourage you to find a great location that you can teach for free or low rent. Apply all the skills in your biz plan and build the school to where you can finance tenant finish, startup deposits, and base rent from existing students and savings (of karate money). If at all possible, I wouldn't want a non martial artist (banker) as my default senior silent partner (see 5 above). I can give more advise off-list with more specific information about your school and goals. Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The only way to put someone out without touching them is by announcing that I'm with the IRS and I'm here to discuss some previous returns.....J. R. My teacher is Master Yu, Chong Chu. I studied under him from 1983 - 1986 at Camp Humphreys Korea and Pyongtaek. I have been trying to make contact for months now but no luck. So, if you have or if you know of someone that studied there, Osan AFB, or Songtan, please forward my email address. Master Yu was close to the TKD Masters so I'm hoping someone has knowledge.
