This is a rare opportunity to see these colorful rituals, which we often learn about only via the next day's after-the-fact newspaper coverage. However it has come to our attention that there are people who illegally wear our uniform simply because it is available from some US suppliers. Do not be fooled by these imposters. If they are not listed in our directory, they are not supposed to wear our official uniform......" Where, oh where are these rules written down? Doesn't it just make you want to go out and buy the uniform and wear it just to piss the bozo off? I mean "illegally"--- as though there is some law? Or how about "imposter" as though there would be some clandestine effort afoot to represent oneself openly as a NHA member when there are only a half-dozen other organizations who accept membership with few questions asked. I hope someone has advised this guy that I better not catch him wearing the "official" Sims Decoder Ring. You know the one--- "authorized to all affiliate organizations"! I wonder if this is the same uniform that MUST be worn by All KMAIA members or you can't teach martial arts in Korea. Rudy? JR? I better not catch any of your folks wearing these much-sought-after duds. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings All, This cracks me up. For years, I have been wearing a variety of uniforms...call it instructor's perogative;) V necks w/& w/o wtf logo, cross tops of a variety of colors, Judo Gi, Hakama, Kung Fu b&w and blue, Karate 3/4 sleeve, competition styles, HKD black w/white diamonds, HKD white w/black diamonds, Thai boxing shorts, sweats & T-shirts, TKD white w/black trim, and when I was younger I dressed up like Ninja (both white & black...ahhh, those were the days!!!) The dobak does not make a difference, but I would definitely not recommend coed nekkid KMA training just to disprove those 'imposter' claims. -- Mark Gajdostik TNT-Martial Arts --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 15:22:39 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Yon_Mu_Kwan_Thoughts?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Eric: "..... I'm interested in the different hapkido "styles" that exist. I'm completely ignorant of what they are (my fault) and what their differences may be. The hapkido that I train has, as far as I know come through two different GM's. Master Toth was with Grandmaster Kim, He Young in the 80's when I first began training in TKD as a young teen, and now is under Grandmaster Park, Jung Hwan. He's been through several other forms of MA also through the 60's and 70's.We call it simply hapkido, or Toth's Self Defense. GM Park's book is called simply "Traditional Hapkido". What is Yon Mu Kwan and what makes it different from Mu Do Kwan? Or any other style for that matter?....." The story behind GM Kwang Sik Myung and the Yon Mu Kwan starts with his time as a student of GM Ji. His time followed considerable exposure to TKD, Judo and Kendo. (Notice that I am using the Japanese terms for Kendo and Judo as the nature of the art is dictated to a great extent by Japanese tradition.) In time GM Myung was able to learn directly under Choi Yong Sul and found that certain variations had arisen in the execution of material. Perhaps this was a matter of variation arising from interpretation, or change influenced by the introduction of additional material. In either case, it became apparent to GM Myung that there was a crying need to examine the Hapkido arts in terms of how the arts themselves had developed. You will notice that in many of GM Myungs' books he regresses Hapkido back to much earlier times, even as far as the Three Kingdoms Period. Personally I don't know that one can support such a position reasonably, but I have tracked influences back to the 10th century so another 300 years may not be completely out of the realm of possibility. To continue, its not that GM Myung does not recognize a huge debt to both Choi and Ji, but rather that it becomes apparent through examining history that the heritage of Choi and Ji are not the only influences in the growth of the arts. The Korean kwan, or "gym", is not a "style" as some people think, but rather a group who share an approach or outlook. In the case of Yon Mu Kwan Hapkido the emphasis is not merely on executing a technique but in understanding how the technique comes to work as it does. In a world where sometimes simply doing a technique, even poorly, is sufficient for advancement, GM Myung supports the approach that people should live and study what they have chosen as their path. In my own case my contribution to the Kwan has been to reorganize a traditional curriculum albeit using an Academic rather than Confucian approach. Similarly, rather than blindly accept the traditions heavily influenced by Japanese culture, I have been investigating the Chinese methodologies looking for additional insights. Again, GM Myung has taught Kendo-esque material for quite some time, and I have been able to build on that by giving equal weight to the Chinese influences through the MYTBTJ. All of this is in keeping with the Kwans' philosophy, and while the kwan itself was superannuated by what we now know as the World Hapkido Federation, the passion for delving deeper into Korean martial traditions is alive and well. Thanks for asking. I hope that you never have to try it.
