I thought it was directly imported from Japan from Mr. Yong Sul Choi. Any Chinese influence would be seen in the kicking techniques. Where can I get accurate information regarding the history and techniques of Hapkido. What is the difference between Aikijutsu and Chin Na? My personal study of Tae Kwon Do resembles Japanese karate, my sons' instructor favors a more Chinese flavor. I wonder how this happened, its all supposed to be Tae Kwon Do! A quick search on google came up with this: http://www.kyohaku.go.jp/mus_dict/hd39e.htm There are a number of possible reasons as to why these straight swords became curved. They may have been improved because there were more actual battles to fight in, or they may have been changed to adapt to new fighting techniques that involved slashing the enemy instead of stabbing the enemy. We don't know for certain the real reason for this change. In any case, the curved tachi sword developed in the 11th Century, at the end of the Heian Period, and many new varieties of sword mountings were created in the Kamakura and Muromachi Periods that followed." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Boyd" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] HDGD - enemy blade control Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray asked about blade control methods in Haidong Gumdo. I guess the best way to describe this part of the curriculum is to be brief. If I try to get too descriptive it will become incomprehensible. We learn a large variety of entering methods wherein the student applies different direct means to void the threat of the enemy blade. This might mean linear or circular leverage against the enemy weapon, beat attacks, presses either by muscular force or by body displacement, as well as feints or other psychologically-based methods. Very early in training strong emphasis is placed on directing the course of enemy strikes either by parrying, clearing or trapping. It is hoped to be able to strongly interrupt the opponent's timing while getting their attack to finish as far from your own attack point as possible. (a few short video clip of some of this stuff in action is available on my website in the 2002 Festival section). The weapon is large, relatively slow, and used with two hands. This limits the sort of "swordplay" which will actually work. Also, the blade is viewed in sections and real engagements occur at a much shorter range than people imagine or instinctively try to create. While I might be redirecting the path of the enemy blade with the middle of my blade I am cutting him with the end. Not surprisingly, the rule applied to engagements is to focus on using each action as a means to kill the enemy. The goal is not to fence or outplay your opponent but to kill them and move on to the next. The art itself is quite graceful but the individual techniques are often, direct and brutal. For example, while I might be able to use leverage, sensitivity and timing to take control of the enemy's blade - turning it to my advantage so that I can cut at wrists or hands, I am taught to do what is necessary to get the attacker's sword off line so that I can kill him. As different as that sounds the difference is not one of time or complexity, but rather one of intent. Sorry for such a limited reply but it's too hard to get these ideas in text. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Stovall, Craig" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 6 May 2003 09:06:15 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Yet More Bullcrap... If he would put the fork and spoon down for a second it might occur to him that a lawsuit were in order. But then again...a lawsuit would be contingent upon the fact that his statement has any merit or basis in reality. Bottom line...the boy ain't too bright for a supposed PhD (Piled High and Deep). Somebody needs to explain that whole "Sphere of Concern/Sphere of Influence" model to him. It might help him to get his life in order, and help him to focus on some issues that another human being besides himself might actually give a rat's azz about. So sad. You wear specific hats to farm sales, livestock auctions, customer appreciation suppers, and vacations. 3.
