Byron, at age 50 and having background on Tae Kwon do you should have no real problem to do HapKiDo. I am from the country of Panama and am a HapKiDo sabomNim, my name is Ramon Navarro andhave been teaching this art for 26 years and also I am 50 years old this coming July, 9. I recomend that you find a respectfull HapKIDo teachernand talk to him and explain to him that you are interested in to some day not too far in the future You would like to be a HapKiDo Black Belt. That You have this - Your specific phisical problem - in your mind about being hurt and that you are afraid that if you continue to do Martial Arts that you could get injured and that you would not like for this to hapen to you but that you would like for him to guide you to become a Black Belt in his school but that you would like to earn your HapKiDo Black Belt on your own and with his help and guidance and also tell him your TKD experiense. Also and in the theam of martial arts being a religion, well this in reality is not true. You see; all Martial arts have a humanistic point of view and its philosophy will sound as it being a religion like Buddism and /or Taoism. This is not really true either becouse all religion like me too a Catholic, I have notised that gfor exsample in Taoism you would venerate the universe and it is becouse the idea that without the universe nothing exsist that is why these thought is behing the abstract ideas that would be religious in the sens. This is that I mean that if you find a Martial School that profecess that you to be in it you must become to this religion then do not join.Buddism is the respect for everything that has life and Confucianism is the veneration of the ansestors. Find in your search the thing that you are looking for !!! HAP Ramon Navarro HapKiDo SabomNim SongMooKwan hapKiDo Panama City Panama > 4. These guys seem to always be concerned with their uniform or their belt or who they know or how many times they have been on vacation to Korea... they very rarely actually talk about techniques or training,,, the uniform means NOTHING!! ......" I agree with your position but would like to take this post as an opportunity to once again raise the question I did a few months back. At the Ft Collins Seminar last year GM Ji wore what I considered the equivalent of a hanbok albeit with a "working top". The color was a sort of grey and he had a Black Belt around his waist. The ankle cuffs were gathered and the jacket, worn outside of the waist was also tied at the chest. I also remember Dr. Kimm showing up at Jackson one year wearing a Han-bok. Now, quite recently GM Myung adopted a sort of reproduction of the old Korean foot soldier uniform as the official WHF uniform. And, of course the WKSWA and WHRDA have their own unique uniforms. My question is why more KMA practitioners don't use something closer to what GM Ji was wearing? As I see it it would work like this. The uniform itself would be constructed of a heavy canvas with gathered ankles. The jacket would NOT be worn in class but taken off at the beginning of class and the top would be a white tee which is actually what would have happened if years ago people had sought out MA instruction. At the end of class the jacket would be donned and worn outside of the waist. No colored belt. The reason I am suggesting this is that most folks who practice KMA still use the sort uniform prevalent in Japanese arts and I feel as though this only contributes to the confusion between the martial traditions of the two cultures. Koreans have their own uniforms--- why not use them. Any thoughts on this? About ten years ago on the old rec-ma list, we had a long chat about those medicines. I remember an M.D. mentioning that the stuff works great, but may have nasty side effects. He said that a lot of the most potent Chinese medicines are similar or identical to those used in cancer treatments and other critical illnesses, but that day to day use was not a good idea. FWIW.
