And how does one become KING, er I mean President of the Union or run for any other national office? Thats another gem of legislative work. You first must file a letter with the Nomination and Election Committee. This committee is first charged with checking your credentials to insure you meet eligibility standards. Fine. However, next this committee actually reviews and determines the acceptability of your intent to run and actually selects the slate of candidates to be considered for each election to a position as an officer. So, you may not run for office of the Union simply because you desire to hold office and meet minimum standards such as US citizenship. This committee may decide that you are an unacceptable candidate! This committee must choose you to run for office. And exactly who is on this committee? Lets see, theres the President himself, one active Past President chosen by the officers, two members appointed by the President, two more elected by the AAC and three more nominated by the Executive Committee (and weve already reviewed the make-up of that committee). Neat huh. So the President and Officers more or less get to choose WHO gets to run against them for future terms of office! Hard to beat an incumbent slate wouldnt you think? Well, theres always Term Limits right? Oh, I forgot there are no more term limitsat least for the Presidency! And you know whats worse. President Lee did not seek out unlimited terms for himself because he simply feels he is the most qualified individual for the job. Or because he has an overwhelming desire to serve the Union. One of President Lees colleagues had the unmitigating gall to stand up at the United States Taekwondo Union Board of Governors meeting and explain to all the voting members present that it is President Lees desire to become the President of the World Taekwondo Federation, the International Governing Body for Taekwondo and an organization in which President Lee already holds a Vice Presidential position. And that in order for President Lee to run for WTF President he MUST hold the Presidency of one of their NGBs. If we were to allow President Lees term of office to expire, as it would under the old bylaws, then he could never achieve his dream! Just what the heck does the political policies of the WTF have to do with the structure, constitution, and bylaws of a United States National Governing Body? The primary reason given for perhaps the most far reaching and detrimental of all changes ever made to our bylaws had/has nothing to do with our Union whatsoever! It was pursued and made for the sole reason of enabling our current President to aspire to the Presidency of another organization. Given all this information regarding representation, voting methodology, practically, if not definitively, a dictatorial position of power for the President and the Officers; is it any wonder why the vast majority of Taekwondo practitioners in this country have nothing to do with the current NGB? How can I say that? By all accounts, there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 Million+ Taekwondo practitioners in this country. By all accounts the USTU registers less than 20,000. Thats 1% of the total population. And that number of registered athletes is diminishing each year. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: FirstPe315@aol.com Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 16:10:15 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Hapkido's Chinese Origin Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net With the below in mind (with the thought that it is true), my question is to all those who ask these questions....who really cares!
