I am also less motivated to train and my Karate is my livelihood. Does anyone have any advice?...." Yes, I do. You know how on this Net there are sometimes discussions about what works in the "real world". You know the sort of discussions I mean-- the ones that use terms like "works on the street" and "in a real fight". It usually has to do with the combat effectiveness of a particular approach. Then somebody comes along and drags up all that ol' crap about building Character or becoming a better person and people move on to something else until the next comparable discussion. You know the discussions I mean? Well, Luke. You are there and the opponent you are facing down is worse than any street-fighter on amphetamines. After many classes and many workouts you are getting a chance to find out just how much skill-building you have done--- with your Character. The struggle you are facing does not involve eye-gouging or groin kicks. What you are facing is how much you have integrated your MA career into your Life. Without anyone around to give you guidance or reinforcement or encouragement you now get a chance to find out how strong your committment is to a way of Life you have been telling yourself that you want. It won't be enough to get off by yourself and do a set number of this or that technique "X" number of times. Instead you are going to have to ask yourself what you thought you were going to make fundamentally different about yourself for having gotten into this stuff in the first place. I can suggest a few things that might help but you will need to do the work. 1.) Find a mentor. Locate a person who has done what you want to do and adapt their methods and goals as your own. 2.) Identify a time EACH DAY that is your time and your time alone. Make it a half hour an hour or two hours but that is your time and interruptions are not an option. 3.) Set goals for yourself. Make them finite, relatively small, discrete, attainable and be sure to build on past goals to set future goals. 4.) Stick with ONE thing. Most people in your situation start investigating all sorts of things with the idea that they are broadening their horizons. Identify a single skill and only consider those things that will improve your abilities with that one skill. Anything other than this is just you chasing after novelty. Thats about it for now. Maybe some other stuff will come to me. I'll let you know.
