In Judo it is common to refer to the Tori (receiver) and Uke (attacker) when practicing techniques. Are there Korean equivalent terms? If so what are they? But remember that in general CDK does not use Japanese terms or traditions (save perhaps the poomse). True your particular CDK group does, but you may? be alone in that. Dr. Kimm was very close to Gm Lee and could probably shed more light on this topic. No disrespect intended, mind you. Just an honest observation. This interest in continuing their studies in Hangul created a request to see parts of our hapkido manual in Hangul, not just English-ized Korean. Sort of the way that Dr. Kimm's "Philosophy of Master" is done (a book I highly recommend to ANY KMA practitioner). Fortunately I have a student who taught English in Seoul for about 1/2 a decade and is helping with the grammar. Jere R. Hello Eric: When my highest ranking personal student (now a Master) came into my school as a very shy young lady nearly twenty years ago, I would have bet it was not possible to transform her into someone capable of "turning it on" when the need required it. I had never in my life met someone so shy, it was almost too hard to deal with. One day, at a full contact tournament at the West Point Academy, this young lady had one of her young students bounced around in the ring. It was a bloody mess, but the rules allowed for that sort of contact. Before long it was my shy girl's turn in the same ring (ladies black belt), and lo and behold she drew the same woman that had given her student a beating. I was about to tell her to pull out of the match when my girl winked at me. The next thing I knew all hell broke loose in that ring, and my shy little girl just trounced her opponent. I was totally amazed at the transformation, and I thought surely she'd get disqualified. Later, I had the opportunity to see her in action against a guy who accosted her on a San Francisco street. Before I could intervene, she had taken care of the problem and the guy took off like he was chased by killer bees. Point is, never underestimate the power or determination of a peeved young woman:) If JRs wife is the meanest woman in the world, my shy young lady takes a close second. In fact, the pair of them had a ball last time they were together at Master Pryga's seminar. Seems that there was an instant bond between these two young ladies, and I'd hate to see anyone make the mistake of thinking them incapable of defending themselves. It gives me so much pleasure to have you tell me about the wonderful accomplishments of your students. While some folks frown on breaking, and some even go so far as telling me that bricks don't fight back (as If I did not know that), the success with your family tell me that the self-confidence it builds is worth every bit of effort you spend on learning how to do this. Now, I'll be so bold as to give you some home work before you come visit with us at Kat Kelly's seminar in Houston. I want to see you break three... no spacers:) Please give my best to your family, and Happy Birthday! BTW, I'll be in Norwalk, OH on June 7th, and I will take some time on working the "KI" breaking. We won't even get kicked out to the parking lot. We will do a full Saturday with at least five Masters teaching, and all DD members are welcome to attend.
