Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I saw it Saturday night. The action is awesome! Even without the CG effects, it would still be a great movie. Definitely could compare it to Hong Kong style films. Yuen Woo Ping does it again! Thank you, but this isn't the first time that I have mentioned this and I honestly believe this is an aspect of KMA that needs to bee stressed repeatedly. For instance, it is not as though I haven't heard nasty remarks about your teacher, Rudy, or JR West if it comes to that. However, having travelled a bit around the KMA circles for a while, it is readily apparent what sort of seeds are being sown by which teachers. (This also one reason I am always astounded by folks who call up and want a referral to a KMA school as though they were calling out for pizza.) It takes time to find out whether a person who presents themselves as a teacher is truely teacher material. It also takes a while to discern whether the fruits of that persons' teaching efforts appropriately reflect what that person is saying. The alternative would be to talk one thing, and produce students of quite another ilk. JR and Rudy are quality teachers not just because they provide good instruction, but, to a greater extent, because they provide a sound, positive influence and their students' deportment is a testament to this. When all is said and done dropping people on their a**es is pretty much the same from art to art. But, to wield such ability and power with temperance and tolerance is a sure sign that a good teacher has worked an influence. No small gift, that. Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 19 May 2003 17:08:22 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Tradition?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Dakin: ".....By the way, Bruce also raised the interesting point of the value of a reconstructed tradition. For my money, a reconstructed tradition is better than no tradition at all. All those folks involved in living history and reconstructed martial arts may be just rediscovering old knowledge, but often that knowledge is no longer really understood or appreciated, and is great to get fresh insights into that sort of lost wisdom......." Thanks for providing your thoughts on this subject. The more I delve into this material the clearer it becomes to me how the KMA have gotten into the situation they find themselves in today. Your citing of the two varied definitons of "tradition" suggests to me a metaphore of the typical commercial KMA instructor as a water skier using two skis--- alternately. If one ski/definition peters out and does not serve the purpose, its easy to shift ones' position to the other ski/definition. In this way, what would SEEM to be presented by instructors as an objective representation of Korean culture could well be a subjective selection of HOW one wants to present WHAT they want to present and WHY. Can this be the sum-total of what we have in KMA? IS there nothing that could be identified as quintessential Korean martial tradition? But, now wait, I'm not finished yet. Take it a step farther. If traditions are broken the moment someone stops expressing them, what is to prevent someone from doing away with the idea of traditions altogether and resorting to extolling the value of the moment. Here in the States we think that something "old" is maybe 100-200 years. Some places in the world have things that go back a couple thousand years. There are belief systems that have survived that long. Do the Koreans have such martial belief systems that have survived? If so, are there folks who are interested in preserving and perpetuating such beliefs, or is this pretty much all an exercise in Romance? You raise some great points.
