Currently, I clean the mats with Pine Sol which is diluted in a bucket of water. Then the mat is scrubbed with this solution using a cotton mop. This process leaves the mat wet for a couple of hours so it has to be done after the classes are finished for the night. The rubbing alcohol idea sounds like a possibility if the mats can withstand it. But, what will this do to the students hands over time, the air within the dojang and the cost over an extended period of time? Eric mentioned a product called "Spray Nine". I know you said that you "thought" it dries fast. Any idea just how fast it really dries? Thanks for the input --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "J.R. Another word for "student" in most schools is "customer", and although it is true that in days past, we cleaned the bathrooms etc., those days are gone. Your students won't say anything, they'll just leave. I find it comforting to have my most senior students, 4th dan and above, clean my dojang with me. They don't pay dues and it is with this agreement that they don't, and it sends a good message to all the lower ranks. Secondly, I can remember when we had a huge kid's class, one of the recurring reasons for why little Johnny was coming to HapKiDo was, "It's something his dad doesn't know anything about"........J. That said, even when I'm up against another guy who needs to turn it down a notch I like to use a little humor like - "Hey, I need to be here on Thursday too" (if its Tuesday) or just a quick "Lets turn the contact down a bit" Pride can make it tough, but training injured or beat up can kill your motivation. -JW I Dan, TKD -----Original Message----- From: TeachingInChina@aol.com [mailto:TeachingInChina@aol.com] Sent: Monday, June 09, 2003 11:08 AM To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Size should not be a factor I have a question for the list. The problem is that the smaller women are very intimidated by me so I do not show any aggression with them.... also have this problem with the men...but I want to be able to show discipline within myself, while also letting others know that size is not a factor when training with me. Usually it was the white belts that did this. I trained in Korea for 5 years and they also washed everybody's Do-bok since we were supposed to leave them at the Do-Jang. I like everybody to chip in to clean the Do-Jang since it also gives us something else to do. I just finished sweeping and moping my place. As I said earlier I teach in a Market after we close so I have to do it (cleaning) anyway. I do ask the students to please pick up all paddles sparring gear and anything else we may use. I teach low income kids in Los Angeles and all of our gear is donated or purchased second hand. My good friend Eddie Urbistondo has been very helpful to our cause. He has donated mats, paddles and other equipment (which I haven't been able to pick up yet). He really is a good friend and brother in the arts I hope and pry that the good Loard continues to bless him and his school. Thank you Bruce for your imput God Bless. Veuleman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Ol Jere Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Jere, You know, i was wondering, of all the people here, who would write back about that comment, and I was kinda hoping it was you. : D To elaborate on my post, I have always ran in the korean division, so that is nothing new, just kinda threw that out there to joke a bit. To answer your post, yes, some things are changing within my school. The group of guys we are with have always used a very mixed vocabulary, and I am just slowly removing some of the japanese. They have removed alot, but not all, and use alot of english. Due to my schools history, I have been stuck in the 1986ish time zone, before Dr Jordan started using alot of english . I have talked at lengths with my instructor Dwain Spillman about this, he sees it as a good move. Even my 'semi' instructors (we learn from everybody, right?) think this is a good idea. Danny Gilliland, my weapons instructor said it best, I have more room to do WHATEVER I want in our system than anyone else, and still be accepted, due to my place in our group. So I am trying to do two main things, 1, please as many people as I can while still keeping myself happy with what I am doing and those changes, and 2, make my students smarter, not more confused. Master Mac is to be commended for his help (where the heck is he, I havent heard from him in a while) and patience, I know he probably wanted me to flip Uber Korean over night, but he knew that would never happen, and has been very supportive with me. In anycase, it is my school, it is my art, and I ultimately must make decisions about what is best for my students. My only hope is that I can spread Master Macs wisdom and guidance to my fellow younger black belts, and produce an even stronger system of pure talent. I think, even though it is a sad thought, once Dr. Jordan passes away or steps down as system head, one of the men who are most likely to take over will probably do the same things I am doing, but he will have much more influence, being a 6th dan now and all that jazz. I am also replacing much of the Japanese with English, and where I see fit, some korean as well. It hasn't been easy, especially the sensei thing, my fraternity brothers even call me that for goodness sake. Jere, I would like to talk at more lengths with you about this, or heck, anything, I think we could stand some history burning and come to better understanding with each other, eh? To the reply on trhe "HALF" question, thank you very much. Is there anyone else who recommends anything else? YITMA Charlie Veuleman By the way, NO GO on the dobak thing. It is a Kamikaze, Japan design, so there is nothing I can do about it. It is a martial arts uniform. And yes, they will still be cut short, ever try to do Tae Kwon Do in a swamp? Gators just bite them off short anyway. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, I could not resist, so Charles; does that mean that you have started using Korean terminology and are wearing a Korean dobok?:) Jere R. If the suttle word to "lighten up" during the match does not work and you are truly at the end of your patience... I would start in the proper rank order to end your problems. Start with your immediate instructor and if they cannot solve the problem work your way up the rank latter. Etiquette is a must!!!
