However If you "tap" and your arm is slightly bent then there is room to follow through which would result in a punch/point. At our tourney's only light contact is allowed and an attentive judge will see if the "tap" was just that or had the potential to become a punch. hi michael, i can see your point. i suppose its quite a balancing act and if there's good technique in a light contact tournament....i can see where a tap'd be called a point. s'all subjective, aint it ;) take care, mel Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy www.cjmaa.com 1-573-673-2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply www.cjmas.com 1-877-847-4072 --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "J.R. In my school, 3rd dans and under wear rank stripes so that the rank and file students will know who is who. 4th dans and above, myself included, wear no indication of rank on their belt of any kind, although they DO wear a stripe on the outseam of their pants, which was always called the "instructor's stripe" and indicated that this person was, in fact, an "instructor", the old title for a 4th dan. I personally feel that the martial arts folks that I run into are of one of two varieties, first, those who care what my rank is, and then those who don't, and usually those who care will find out. I can remember about 10 years ago, working with a black belt class of English and Irish HapKiDo instructors at Dr. Kimm's, and I asked the good Dr. not to tell them who I was. I had the absolute BEST time just being a student once more. I also think that folks who wear a ton of stripes on their belts, which by the way tends to hurt my eyes while counting, is perhaps a bit pretentious, like the person who gets irate when you forget that he is a "grandmaster". On the subject of diamond-stitch uniforms, I have about 15 of them in all sizes, that I have used for about 20 years for seminars and clinics, so that the students can tell who my assistants are, and the reason I used them was because they were rather rare. I still use them, but only because I still have them. My WORST story on super young black belts was dropped on my head during a post class visit to the local grocery store, when what do I spy?....a tiny TKD black belt in full uniform, screaming his head off while riding in mom's shopping cart. Little kids are not the only offenders when it comes to this, during our black belt test this past weekend, a story was told of a middle aged kung-fu black belt sitting at the bar at the local "Grady's"....Good grief!!! This weekend was also the time for the "First Annual Dr. Tavassoli Goes Away Forever" party, prior to his leaving for Savannah, GA for a 5 year General Surgery residency. He has been my student for nearly 25 years and I will miss him, and a HapKiDo school in that area will temporarily gain QUITE an asset...........By the way...a belated Happy Fathers Day!!....J. R. I have to agree with the head gear thing because ive been hit by those black belts in the head and when your not wereing one its not so pritty michael, My suggestion is you should have private lessons for the people with these problems and do less in the drills but still push them on loosing wait. Then practice more kata and form so its not to hard on there kneese.and just let them sparr for 20min.so it will exersise them and will help with there speed and footwork.I dont know if this will help you but i did try.I hope your problem will be solved soon good luck. danae Denise , this is strange because i was told by a respected instructor that in japanise the color black ment life. For when he joined a japinese style he wore white and he came in and they were starteld to tell him later that black was life and white was death.so you might want to check your info again and im not trying to push your buttons or enything but thats what ive herd.thank you for listining to me.sorry for my spelling im just tired. danae im not george or charles but i just wanted to say that uniforms are great and all but you shouldent dwel on that i mean that if your a great fighter there not going to judge you for the way you look.if you think im wrong im good with that just keep on practiceing.well bye. danae --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 14:42:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Bert Edens To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Sensei Hamsters Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Craig "Just promoted his hamster to green belt" > Stovall With all due respect, sir, my hamster can take your hamster... I am not one of them. Running away from embarrassment is never the answer. Fear of embarrassment will cripple your ability to perform difficult tasks. It will stifle your desire to try new things... it will relegate you to the rut of mediocrity. If you are physically in danger - then leave. But if you want to run away to avoid embarrassment, I recommend you stay - at least until you get a deserved great grade on your test. Then if you choose to leave, you are not running away, you are moving forward. You determine who you are. I also noticed in TKD Times two submittals from the chubby grandmaster wannabe from down florida way. One where he sold someone a grandmaster cert and another where some other fellow is now aligned with his "org". fwiw, the latter fellow likes to mail out photos of himself in various bodybuilding poses. The only relation to martial arts is that he is wearing martial arts pants and a black belt. In an email that he sent directly to me a couple months ago he commented, you can tell I'm a serious martial artist, just LOOK at me. !!! Same fellow gave me several names of people that knew him well and would verify that he was serious martial artist. All those I checked did not know him, other than that they too had received photos from him via the mail. Again, doing no martial arts, just posing with his shirt off. Not sure which is worse. Guys giving out black belts to 4 year olds or these guys. Perhaps they are all cut out of the same cloth.?. Whine off, wine on... JR, My best friend works for a private prison corporation, and after we got back from the March 'look closely at the blue carpet' festival there in Jackson, he heard all of the stories, then went to work talking about it. Now, there are a bunch of his fellow badguy babysitters who are interested in coming to the September version. Could you send down a thicker pack of flyers this time? No garuntee they will come, but the more the merrier right? Mac, Its official, I am running Ja On for worlds. I have a buddy of mine who is a first gup running in the black belt division (sometimes they allow people to move up to the black belt division before they test, usually after they have dominated the brown belt division for a year or more, to give them something to do) and he is running Ja On, which in my opinion he shouldn't even know! So we are going to have a friendly competition, which I am sure will result in some adult refreshement Rounds on bourbon street that night at Mango Mango. Wish me luck! IMHO, it is the tournament director who is ultimately responsible, because referees are not taught to avoid such problems by explaining their decisions in a clear and concise manner. It is also highly desirable to have referees make signals that are used by all refs and easily understood. In all cases, the ref must show competence by making clear and authoritative decisions that signal to the audience that he knows his business. A judge who wavers in his decisions causes more problems. Most spectators are parents or friends of competitors, and without them we would be hard pressed to hold such events. I believe that it is in the interest of the sport to educate the public, and the five minutes of explaining the rules etc. before competition begins is time well spent if it avoids anger and disappointments. I also believe that mini seminars at martial art schools help educate parents and students alike. In my school, even kids and low ranks are asked to judge at school sparring sessions etc. This will help them "see" points, and that in turn helps them score points. More importantly, it helps prepare them for the eventuality of judging when they are black belts. Just as a black belt is not automatically a teacher, s/he is also not automatically a judge. These are skills that must be taught, and few school owners actually do this. Hello Danny: I wonder how many folks know that Bill has some great hand techniques. I'll be in Houston on Saturday, July 26th to meet with our host Kat Kelly and some of the friends we made at JRs Jackson seminar. I am sure Kat will be more than happy to share more info on that seminar. The following day, Sunday, July 27th, I'll be in the Chicago area. More specifically, I'll be at Masters Stigall and Gavin's dojang in DOWNERS GROVE, IL. For more info on the Chicago seminar, please contact me direct. On August 21st (yes this IS on a Thursday), we have the pleasure of hosting Master Geoff Booth at our dojang in Canada. For the hardy souls who wish to stay for the weekend, I will be more than happy to work with you on Friday and Saturday as well. Geoff will have gone on his merry way to Europe (I believe) by then, but I'll be tuning myself up for my September 15-25th seminar tour in Australia. So, come on UP (North) if you like. Just let me know you are coming, and I'll keep the lights on:) Thanks for the bandwidth Ray.
