Then progess to thinner pads. I think if you hurt yourself initially, that fear will always be there. Last week my wife Karen did a perfect front fall on pavement when an unleashed Pit Bull charged our leashed dog in a parking lot at a local park. She got tangled up in the lease and went down. Luckily she turned her head to the side to avoid her nose. Did smash her glasses and wound up with a black eye, scrapped knee and wrist. I did have to apologise to God afterwards for all the cussing I did! Sports bras are cheap at Target or Walmart. If that doesn't work, my friend ran track in high school, she used an Ace bandage to hold them down. Her breasts were exremely large and this ace bandage trick worked well for her. Fred __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! My guys and I do an overabundant amount of ground fighting and choking so these double weave doboks withstand the test of time. I have also noticed that when I was younger I wanted every kind of patch I could find on my uniform, it got to the point that I looked like the nascar version of Martial arts... as I approach my older years I find that I don't really want much info on my dobok anymore, I have a simple Sin Moo Hapkido patch given to me by Rick Nabors on my two doboks and that is it,,, it seems the older you get the phrase "less is more" becomes more into play...IMHO anyway.. Today, on his way home, my father saw an accident and when he got close enough to see what was going on, he saw a small moving van that ran over a young boy (about 8 or 9) and severed his leg. The leg was not completely severed from his body, and I hope and pray that with the quick help of those who witnessed it, and the doctors an emergancy team, that the boy wont lose his leg and will make a full recovery. Let's take a minute to keep him and the driver of the van in our prayers Jye __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In our dojang we do not have any ornamentation on our dobok, and those that know me and have seen my students, know that the colored belts wear a white single weave yudo style dobok and we use the same belt system that I started with in 1974. Why? Out of respect for my first teacher. I wear the same belt I received for my 4th dan test back in 91. It won't change until I earn my 7th dan or it wears out (as I have only been a 5th dan for 4 years it will be a LONG time before I see a 7th dan, if I ever do). Our black belts wear the same uniform for BB's that my current teacher does and for demos and seminars I wear the same one my teacher does. Why? Out of respect for my current teacher. Being the only hapkido dojang in the Cincinnati area, we recently were the 1/2 time show at a taekwondo tournament and my students commented that all the different uniforms were a distraction from training and asked me what they represented (I obviously had no answer) and my wife commented that it looked like Walt Disney tossed his cookies. I am colored blind and really don't care what colors uniforms are. My point, if there is one, is that we do not do anything without a reason. Just my thoughts. Jere R. Hilland www.hapkidoselfdefense.com --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Julie Meyer" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 18:25:34 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] re: Vol 10, No. 269 -- Need info - sensitive female issue Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am usually one who reads the DD and does not respond, but I felt I could offer some information regarding this post: >I have female students that are having difficulties during cardio or more >energetic TKD practice. >Their problem surrounds their ample chest size. They dont want to jump or >bounce due to discomfort/embarassment. From the DD women, what have you >done/seen done to wrangle in the uhhh.....chest area??? >I have no ideas here other than suggesting a sports bra with metal welded >reinforcements...any suggestions would be very much appreciated. I am a Hapkido student, and more importantly, a female Hapkidoist with "ample chest size." Not that I am too thrilled to announce that fact, but it is a fact. One thing that I have done is make sure that when I buy a sports bra, I try it on in the store. If it fits "comfortably" I get a size smaller. They tend to expand with use, sweat, etc. and having it fit in the store will make it too large to adequately control the breast tissue during rigorous activity. I tried the metal underwire "sports" bras, but they tend to bend in very bad places during some parts of training, and that just hurts way too much. One thing I will note, those of use with larger chests tend to get used to them during training, and as long as nobody else in the Dojang mentions them, gawks at them, or makes a big deal about them (no pun intended) they are simply just a part of our anatomy. My advise to the females with larger breasts who train in the MA: simply get used to having some breast discomfort during training. There will be times when certain activities cause more discomfort and pain than others, but that is simply a fact of life. Personally, I absolutely despise standing front break-falls. There is no way (that I have found) to fall flat on my front without having breast pain. But, you deal with it, get done with that activity, and move on. One thing about MA training is the fact that not only are you training to learn techniques, you are training to learn self control. This is just one more area to learn to control the pain issue. I have seemed to ramble enough, I hope this helps. LOL...wow, metal welded reinforcements. maybe we outta do some market research on that one ;) speaking as a woman, a woman with that issue, a woman who teaches other women with that issue, and a martial arts supplier, i think i can answer this one :) tell yer double D's to stand at ease cuz there is an answer ... some options: 1. chest guards which are worn over the bra, under the uniform: Women's Gear 2. a cat suit, which acts as a compression suit, holding the chest more firmly in place: truWest Custom Sport Products catalogue page 7 , item 7A/CAT/CATSUIT 3. BIKE compression shirt: Bike XST Sleeveless Performance Shirt in Shirts at International Jock in addition, they might also like the BIKE compression shorts. i do. and finally, be aware that there is a load of embarrassment involved, especially if its a co-ed class. be sensitive to the need to try and move to the back of the class during activities that might cause some discomfort and to not ask one of these gals to come up front and lead the class in jumping jacks ;) good luck and take care, mel Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy www.cjmaa.com 1-573-673-2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply www.cjmas.com 1-877-847-4072 --__--__-- Message: 11 From: To: Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 15:45:31 -1000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Ample Bozums Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> Again, I might recommend Duct Tape! Boyd" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] sparring multiple opponents Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Thanks for the replies about sparring multiple opponents. Your answers lead me to a few more questions. When you set up a round of sparring with 2 or 3 attackers, do you take time to prepare a strategy for the group of attackers? do you give goals to the attackers, defender or both? How is the duration of a match determined? Prior to the production of specialized sparring armour for Haidong Gumdo, sparring was an activity done between trusted companions in your class. It was either no-contact with wooden sword or light contact to full-body with juk-to and unarmed techniques. (fist, elbow, hip throws, round kicks, push kicks, sweeps). For those with the money and inclination, traditional kumdo armour was purchased for full contact, limited target or full-body sparring. The idea was to spar until you could spar no more - to experiment. It was non-competitive and used no scoring. You were expected to acknowledge good techniques from your partner and the whole thing was to be practical and educational. It was a way to see through the generic symbolism of the forms and develop practical technique. Generally, match length was by time or by fatique. Now of course, everything is changing and the new armour is leading to competitive and restrictive sparring rules which do not in my opinion reflect our art, or our core principles. That seems to be the normal result of anything done by committee. I am quite curious how other people/styles approach setting up these kinds of exercises. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 14 Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2003 03:08:43 GMT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Dennis McHenry Subject: [The_Dojang] Fear of falling...
