It got me thinking. Perhaps the time -is- ripe for some type of regulation of the martial arts in the US. I have -always- been against it in the past. After all, who wants someone with perhaps Japanese MA background regulating something like eskrima or silat or hapkido. But after reading thru TKD Times again I am reminded of how people can simply make most any claim they wish (e.g. being the US arm of some legit Korean org, or receiving a grandmaster cert from a org that doesn't even issue same, or associations that advertise if you join them you will receive the rank you deserve [no doube code for purchase], or places that will blatantly sell you certs including 10th Dan, Grandmaster, Ph.D., Professor, Senator, Diplomat, Founder/Doju, etc.) !!! With regulation in place would be have people jumping from 2nd Dan to 8th Dan in a year or two just because they came up with a good name for an org? Would we have chubby wannabes making claims they can't backup? I'm torn... I'm typically against more laws, more regulation, yes my politics lean toward the conservative (surprise surprise). But the situation of martial arts bozos just seems to be getting worser and worser {sic}. Perhaps something like is done in higher education in the US where a group like North Central provides accreditation to a university would work in the MAs...??? How is it handled in countries where regluation occurrs? How can it be accomplished so that one group/discipline/art doesn't control over different, perhaps non-traditional, arts? Or can it? I didn't realize they had Dan ranks in baduk. http://www.ohtc.com/TraditionalBaduk/main.htm for the game, info on the game, info on the Traditional Baduk Association and the American Baduk Association. fwiw... Nothing traditional about it. The Dobok or Dogi are really recent inventions. By tradition the uniform was often the undergarments. So by that tradition many men should be wearing boxers, briefs, or Boxer Briefs. Others wore what was common clothing for the times. In some systems it was the tradition to wear the uniform of the warrior (Samurai and Hwarang). Weather you wear Dobok, or BDU's or jeans/t-shirt. It just doesn't matter. Do you wear a white, red, blue, or even PINK Dobok? It just doesn't matter. Heck you might even wear a tutu. It just doesn't matter. What matters is that your teacher instructs you in the finest manner possible. The techniques work, the environment is conductive to learning, and the message is compatible with what you want.
