Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr Terry: I read your post about regulation and must say I found it to be quite disturbing as I do not favor governmental medling in any facet of my life. Just look at the mess these incompetents have made of every other issue of import. This isn't to say that some mindless miscreant didn't MEAN well, they simply dont seem to to DO well, and I strongly doubt that anything would change with this subject. The people chosen to head the commitees would probably be among some of your favorite cretins, raking in the big bucks through their fake federations, etc now given creedence through their governmental alliances while finally getting rid of folk like you and me so they won;t ever look bad again. In our federation, one is supposed to reach at least the rank of second Dan and have "apprenticed" under the tutaledge of a certified instructor before being offered the opportunity to test for the title of "certified instructor". Everyone who aspires to this is not offered, and all those who test do not pass. All instructors are supposed to attend an annual seminar to make sure everyone is "on the same page " in order to mantain the standards that our Grandmaster demands. The time elapsed between beginning training and becoming an instructor is usually six to seven years, sometimes longer. I have been told by my seniors that it is our responsibility to police our own federation, maintaining high standards and offering only the very best to each student who comes through our doors. It is my hope that perhaps you were playing "devil's advocate" with your post to see what might ensue. Likewise it is hoped that the public is smart enough to investigate any school or instructor prior to making a commitment to train with them. GM Pellegrini gives out LEGITIMATE certifications. He doesn't give out certifications that have no basis in reality. If you receive a certificate from the World Kido Federation you received it from the World Kido Federation and GM In Sun Seo will attest to it. You may not agree with what either of these men teach but they are two different animals. GM Pellegrini doesn't claim to have a Ph.D. unlike others. GM Pellegrini still trains and is in good shape. Except that smile ;) Michael Rowe --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "R. Anyone can advertise as a martial arts teacher but the regulating factor comes when you try to operate. You would be unable to hire premises or open a full time school as, without recognised certification, no insurance company would touch you. We need member-to-member, professional indemnity and public liability as instructors and this tends to be the controlling mechanism. Also, as UK is such a small place, all legitimate instructors know each other. I've been on the UK martial arts scene for 36 years now and there tends to be a fatherly eye kept on up-and-coming youngsters to ensure they don't bring martial arts into disrepute. Also, we don't use any joint twisting or techniques which would exert excess pressure on growing joints, on children. In fact, we teach a completely different syllabus to our 4 age groups (4-7, 7-10, 10-13, 13-16) The older group learns the adult syllabus tailored to the individual student. Not everyone does this but most legitimate instructors also have nationally accredited exercise teachers qualifications. There is a run-down of our student groups on our website www.nskma.co.uk Master Bob Banham --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Sat, 21 Jun 2003 09:40:56 -0700 (PDT) From: "L. Veuleman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Not Washing Belts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ya'll, On the subject of washing or not washing belts, those of you that think the idea is useless, let me throw this on the table for you... It is one of the very few ways I think we have of making the importance of hard work stick by having something tangible for our students. Its almost like a good luck charm for the students. It is also a good way to learn and show respect for things you earn, instead of leaving it laying around (refering to the not letting it touch the ground rule). Sure, I have always thought it was a bit silly, maybe even childish to have this 'superstition' , but why not? Are we too good to beleive in an old martial art tradition? Heck besides with the quality of belt out there today, one washing might be the end of its life span. I bet you guys don't believe in Santa Clause either,ya ol fuddy duddies. Please forgive me by calling you an American...Didn't want to insult you eh? ;) ha..ha..ha.. I might add another reason why I really never experienced this was due to the fact that my wife's family lives in the mountains of Chunju and most of the buisness I did over there was centered around the country side manufacturers and thus I never really did stay in Seoul very often. Perhaps country side people are just more friendlier..I don't know. The one incident I had was when I was with my wife and her brother walking around the city of Suwon at night. We passed in front of a club where the guy outside proceeded to call me an SOB American. Unfortunately he was to dumb to know that the first thing we Americans love to learn are the curse words in foreign languages. :) I proceeded to ask him in Korean what he just said to me. He was quite shocked that I spoke to him in Korean and quickly said that he said nothing. My brother in law then stepped in to scold him (since the kid was younger) Then my brother in law just apologized to me and we went on. He told me (through my wife) that more of the younger kids have this "hatred" and yet they really don't know why. I was surprised because I thought it would have been the older people who had more of the animosity towards us. Well..live and learn. Anthony, this is probably a stupid question, but is your wife Korean and have you received a lot of flack for being a mixed couple over there? Thanks again for the info.
